Chapter 18 - The Sound of Breathing, The Flow of Water

I. The First Training Day

Morning came early at the Imperial Academy.

The bell rang across the grounds.

DONG—! DONG—! DONG—!

The sound echoed through every courtyard, every dormitory, every training field.

Leo opened his eyes.

He had already been awake.

Sitting cross-legged.

Breathing slow.

Mind clear.

Outside the dormitory, footsteps rushed.

"Move! We're late!"

"Hurry!"

"First day—don't mess it up!"

Leo stood calmly.

Han Wei was still struggling to tie his robe.

"Hey—Leo," he said, half-panicked, "why are you always so calm?"

Leo smiled faintly.

"Because rushing won't make me faster."

Han Wei blinked.

"…I hate how that makes sense."

II. Entering the Training Hall

The training hall was massive.

Stone pillars lined the sides.

Students gathered in rows.

Different groups had already formed.

Noble families stood together.

Military descendants gathered separately.

Independent cultivators stayed on the edges.

Leo walked in quietly.

And immediately—

Eyes turned.

Whispers followed.

"That's him…"

"Shapeless sword boy…"

"Ren family…"

"And his grandfather got injured…"

A faint laugh came from one side.

"Well… looks like the Ren family is declining."

Another voice added casually:

"A broken swordmaster and a rookie student."

Leo heard everything.

Every word.

Every tone.

Every heartbeat.

His Second Stage Mind-Wave perception made it impossible not to.

But he did not react.

He stood still.

Silent.

Listening.

III. Mockery and Pressure

A group of students stepped forward.

Their robes were marked with a golden crest.

A noble family.

One of them spoke with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"You're Leo Ren, right?"

Leo nodded.

"Yes."

The student tilted his head.

"I heard your grandfather was injured at the border."

Silence spread slightly.

Others were listening.

Leo answered calmly.

"Yes."

The student smirked.

"Unfortunate."

Another added:

"Without him, the Ren family's influence must be… fragile."

A third laughed lightly.

"Do you plan to rebuild it alone?"

Leo looked at them.

His expression didn't change.

"I plan to train," he said.

The answer was simple.

But steady.

For a moment—

They didn't know how to respond.

Then one scoffed.

"Let's see how long that confidence lasts."

They turned away.

But the message was clear.

This was not a welcome.

This was a warning.

IV. Friendly Faces

After they left, Han Wei leaned closer.

"…You handled that well."

Leo shrugged slightly.

"They're not wrong."

Han Wei frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Leo looked ahead.

"If I'm weak, their words are true."

Han Wei blinked.

"…You're scary calm."

A softer voice spoke from behind.

"You shouldn't take them seriously."

Leo turned.

A girl stood there.

Simple robes.

Clear eyes.

"No matter what they say," she continued, "strength proves everything."

Leo nodded slightly.

"Thank you."

She smiled faintly.

"My name is Mei Lin."

"Leo."

Han Wei jumped in.

"I'm Han Wei! Also ignored by noble families!"

Mei Lin laughed softly.

Tension eased.

Just slightly.

V. The Instructor Arrives

The hall fell silent instantly.

A man stepped forward.

His presence was heavy.

Controlled.

His voice echoed.

"Sit."

Everyone obeyed.

He looked across the students.

"First day of training."

Pause.

"No techniques."

Murmurs began—

He raised his hand.

Silence returned.

"We begin with breathing."

Some students frowned.

"Breathing?" one whispered.

The instructor's gaze sharpened.

"You think you know how to breathe?"

No one answered.

"Then listen."

VI. The Breathing Method

He demonstrated slowly.

"Inhale."

The air shifted.

Subtly.

"Exhale."

Wind moved around him.

"Breathing is not survival," he said.

"It is control."

Leo focused.

The instructor continued:

"You draw energy not by force—but by alignment."

He stepped forward.

"Feel the surroundings."

"Do not grab."

"Do not rush."

"Let it come."

Students began trying.

Some forced energy.

Some struggled.

Some grew impatient.

Leo closed his eyes.

And listened.

Wind.

Sound.

Rhythm.

He aligned his breath.

Inhale—

Energy flowed naturally.

Exhale—

The flow stabilized.

No resistance.

No struggle.

The instructor paused.

And looked directly at Leo.

"…Good."

The word was quiet.

But heavy.

Several students turned.

The noble group frowned.

VII. Deeper Understanding

As the training continued, Leo's awareness expanded.

Breath connected to:

Body.

Mind.

Space.

He realized something.

"This is the foundation of everything…"

Sword.

Bow.

Mind-wave.

All required alignment.

Not force.

The instructor spoke again:

"Those who cannot control breath—cannot control power."

The wind in the hall intensified slightly.

Students struggled.

Sweat appeared.

Leo remained still.

Balanced.

VIII. Sword Saint Watching

Far away—

In her bamboo courtyard—

Sword Saint Mariya watched.

Her perception extended across the academy.

She observed Leo.

His breathing.

His mind.

His stability.

"…Exceptional."

She tapped her finger lightly.

"Not just talent."

"Understanding."

She closed her eyes.

And sent something.

Not energy.

Not a command.

A method.

IX. The Water Method

Leo felt it instantly.

A subtle shift.

Like a drop falling into still water.

His mind trembled.

Then—

Calmed deeper than before.

A new concept formed.

Water Observation Method.

Not forced.

Not taught directly.

But understood.

Leo's breathing slowed further.

He imagined:

A still lake.

No ripples.

No disturbance.

Then—

Wind touched the surface.

Ripples formed.

But they did not break the lake.

They moved.

Flowed.

Returned to stillness.

Leo's awareness followed.

Every sound.

Every vibration.

Every breath in the hall—

Became ripples on water.

His mind—

Did not react.

It observed.

Perfectly.

X. Transformation

Time passed.

The training hall grew quiet.

Even the instructor noticed.

Leo's presence had changed.

Not stronger.

But deeper.

More stable.

More dangerous.

The instructor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Interesting."

XI. End of Session

The bell rang again.

DONG—!

"Enough," the instructor said.

Students exhaled in relief.

Some collapsed.

Some gasped.

Some complained.

Leo opened his eyes slowly.

The world felt different.

Sharper.

Calmer.

Han Wei leaned over.

"…What did you do?"

Leo smiled slightly.

"I listened."

Han Wei groaned.

"I need better ears."

XII. Aftermath

As students left the hall, whispers followed again.

"Did you see that?"

"He didn't move at all…"

"His breathing…"

"That's not normal…"

The noble group watched silently.

Their expressions were darker now.

This wasn't just rumor anymore.

Leo was not ordinary.

XIII. A Silent Connection

That night—

Leo sat alone again.

Moonlight reflected softly.

His breathing aligned with the night.

His mind—

Like water.

Still.

Deep.

Far away—

Sword Saint Mariya opened her eyes.

"…Good."

She smiled faintly.

"You understood."

Leo didn't know.

But he had just received guidance from one of the strongest beings in the world.

And he had accepted it—

Without resistance.

XIV. The Beginning of Real Growth

The first day had ended.

But something had changed.

Not just in skill.

In direction.

Leo now had:

Silver Body foundation

Second Stage Mind-Wave

Water Observation Method

Recognition from Sword Saint

Attention from academy factions

The academy had tested him.

Watched him.

Measured him.

Now—

It would begin to challenge him.
