Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23

Chapter 23 – Aetherion's Trial

Li Chen's foot crossed the faint purple line.

In that instant, the Hall Guardian moved.

Its bowstring twanged, and the first arrow shot forward like a streak of darkness. Li Chen's body reacted instantly. He twisted midair, narrowly evading the projectile. This time, however, his dodge wasn't panicked or sloppy. His body moved faster, his reflexes sharper. He felt it—just a little, but enough—the pressure chamber, the Layer One fights, the constant Qi circulation—they were paying off. He had adapted.

The arrow thudded into the stone behind him. Dust and shards scattered. He exhaled through his nose, catching his balance quickly, but no time was wasted. Another arrow followed almost immediately, and Li Chen realized the pattern: the guardian wouldn't hesitate for a second.

"Alright… that's enough of you teasing me," he muttered.

The first arrow had been a warm-up. He knew the second one was going to really test his stamina. By the third, he was forced to activate Shadow Step. His body blurred with motion, disappearing for a heartbeat and reappearing a few steps from the guardian .He barely avoided another arrow.

He landed, knees bending to absorb the force, and cursed under his breath. Shadow Step—his trump card—had already been triggered. He only had one more usage before the cooldown kicked in. Using it just to survive was… frustrating. He had hoped to use it as a decisive strike. Not a desperate dodge.

Breathing heavily, Li Chen forced himself to focus. One thing was clear: this wasn't a fight to rely on luck. He had to be methodical. He observed the guardian again, noting how fluidly it moved, how its arrows tracked him with an almost sentient precision.

Only one path remained. One-on-one. Face-to-face.

He quickly activated Shadow Step again.

Not to dodge. Not to react. This time, he used it offensively. His body blurred once more, moving closer to the guardian with the speed of a bolt. The faint sound of the guardian adjusting its stance reached him mid-motion.

Crushing Palm.

He launched it immediately, aiming directly for the guardian's helmeted face. The dark armor looked hard, unyielding, but the Qi condensed in his palm burned hot with force. He struck, expecting the armor to give slightly under his energy… but immediately realized his mistake.

The guardian shifted with inhuman speed, abandoning the bow entirely. Its body twisted aside in perfect synchronization, avoiding the strike. Before Li Chen could retract his hand, a sharp, unyielding force collided with his abdomen.

The impact sent him sprawling several feet back. Pain exploded through his ribs, radiating into his shoulders. He hit the stone floor with a grunt, skidding to a stop. Dust and shards of stone kicked up around him.

[-15HP]

He coughed, the taste of blood in his mouth, but his eyes remained fixed on the guardian.

It hadn't moved more than a step. The bow now hung loosely at its side, useless for the moment. Its helmeted gaze—or whatever passed for a gaze—was still locked on him.

Li Chen's fists clenched. He could feel every bruise, every burn in his Qi. The fatigue of Shadow Step and Layer One's fights weighed heavily on him. He immediately understood he couldn't keep relying on dodges.

Another arrow was loosed, faster this time. He jumped, twisting midair, landing behind the faint purple line, panting. His body screamed at him, but his mind forced it to comply. Adaptation wasn't optional. Survival demanded it.

He studied the guardian carefully. Each movement was precise. It didn't waste energy. Every arrow, every step, every counter was deliberate. The armor plates shifted slightly, the purple veins glowing with each motion.

Li Chen exhaled slowly, calming his Qi. The cool down period had finally elapsed Shadow Step was ready for use once more. His decision came quickly. This wouldn't be a defensive dodge. This would be the opening of the fight.

He blurred forward once more, moving past the purple line with confidence. The guardian responded immediately, drawing an arrow. This time, Li Chen didn't evade. He let it fly, letting the arrow cut past his shoulder, grazing him lightly. Pain flared, but his focus sharpened.

He closed the distance with a low stance, moving beneath the guard of the next arrow. Crushing Palm fired again, but this time not at the faceplate—he aimed for the chest joint, the one part of the armor he could discern from his earlier observation.

The impact resonated, sending shock through the guardian's frame, but it wasn't enough. The figure countered almost instantly with a sweeping strike from its armored gauntlet. Li Chen was knocked sideways, skidding across the floor. He rolled, barely controlling the pain, and forced himself upright.

His body was beginning to feel the strain . Each movement, burned more than the last. Shadow Step wouldn't last forever. He needed a new approach.

For several minutes, they danced this way. Li Chen tested, dodged, struck, rolled, and recovered. The guardian matched him every step, relentless but predictable when he looked closely. The purple veins along its armor flickered with each attack it blocked, each time it parried his strikes.

Then he noticed a pattern. Every time he forced the guardian to commit to a block, the right arm would retract slightly. Its movements became slightly predictable. One misstep, and the opening would appear.

Li Chen's lips curled. His body burned, muscles screaming, but he had found his way.

Shadow Step activated again.

He moved past the guardian in a blur. The guardian raised its arm, aiming to strike him as before, but Li Chen anticipated it. He twisted, letting his fist fly with concentrated Qi—Crushing Palm—into the narrow seam between the helmet and the shoulder plate.

The blow landed. Sparks of energy erupted, and a faint crack echoed. The guardian staggered back, but only briefly. Its bow dropped to the floor, and for a fraction of a heartbeat, its defensive movements slowed.

Li Chen didn't pause. Shadow Step was gone, but he didn't need it. He relied on sheer timing and concentrated energy, striking repeatedly at the vulnerable points he had discovered. Palm after palm, strike after strike, until finally—

The armor began to crack, splintering under the relentless assault. The guardian staggered, motion slowing. Purple light flared violently from the seams.

Then, with a resonant shattering sound, the guardian's body fractured into a thousand floating shards. The dark stone plates dissolved into particles of faint purple light, swirling around Li Chen like dust in sunlight.

In the center, where the armor had once stood, a small object hovered. It radiated a soft, almost sentient glow—half crystal, half liquid, pulsing like a heartbeat. Li Chen stepped forward cautiously, reaching out.

[Guardian Core – Name: Aetherion Core]

He could feel energy thrumming from it, different from the beast cores he had absorbed before. It wasn't wild or chaotic. It was refined, almost intelligent. As he absorbed it, his body tingled, Qi surging with a new kind of clarity.

Then his eyes caught the glowing orb behind where the guardian had stood. Its soft violet light bathed the hall. This was the prize all along. The one the guardian protected with unwavering diligence.

[Orb Name: Celestium Sphere]

Li Chen inhaled, the weight of the moment settling over him. With deliberate steps, he approached the orb and reached out. The instant his hand touched it, warmth and energy flowed into him. The Celestium Sphere's glow intensified, and Li Chen could feel the completion of the trial.

A panel appeared instantly before him.

Li Chen exhaled, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He had suffered. He had been forced to push his body and mind to the absolute limit. Every arrow, every strike, every bruise had tested him.

And yet, he had adapted. He had conquered.

Before he could linger, the hall dissolved around him. The space shimmered, the purple line faded, and a soft wind of Qi swept past. In the next heartbeat, he was no longer in the castle.
