Chapter 21 - Ripples of Defiance

The city was quiet now. Not peaceful—too much had changed for peace—but it was still. The air felt lighter, and the warmth that lingered in Liora's chest wasn't just hers. It was shared, threading through the people who had survived the Keepers' first wave of containment.

Aren hovered beside her, solid now, fully present. His violet eyes scanned the streets, taking in the subtle changes—the way reality seemed to breathe, uncertain but alive.

"They're recalculating," he said. "They didn't anticipate an anchor this strong."

Elias adjusted the tablet, sweat streaking his face. "The exceptions you created… they're spreading faster than expected. The Keepers will notice, and they won't take it lightly."

Liora clenched her fists. "Then let them come. I won't give them the choice to erase him—or anyone else—again."

The warmth in her chest pulsed suddenly, sharper. She felt the first tremor of something big—a ripple of the exception moving beyond the city, threading into nearby towns, into people who had never been aware of the Vanishing. Names surfaced, memories returned, and with them, confusion, fear, and hope all at once.

A young boy stared at Liora from across the street, wide-eyed. "I… I remember my father," he whispered. "I thought he was gone."

The warmth flared again. Liora realized it wasn't just Aren she had anchored—it was the very idea of memory itself, fighting to survive.

Elias swallowed hard. "You've started a chain reaction. They won't just try to erase you next—they'll try to contain the entire exception."

Liora exhaled slowly. "Then we make sure it's not just me they're fighting. Everyone who remembers will be part of it."

Aren touched her mind gently. And together, we'll hold it.

She nodded. "Together. Always."

But somewhere far above, the Keepers stirred. Their voices, layered and metallic, carried across the air.

The anomaly is expanding.

Containment is failing.

Decision required.

The world had noticed.

And Liora knew—it would not forgive her for long.
