Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 - Night

They picked the movie late enough that the theater was half empty. Ryan bought snacks he didn't finish. Harvey watched most of the film without really following it. Neither of them talked much. It was enough to be somewhere that wasn't the apartment.

When it ended, Ryan stood up and stretched like he'd been sitting for hours instead of two.

"Too early to go back," he said.

Harvey checked the time. "It's late."

"Late isn't over," Ryan replied. "One drink."

They walked a few blocks to a bar Ryan liked. Nothing loud. Nothing polished. A place that stayed dim on purpose. They found two stools at the counter.

Ryan ordered first. Harvey followed, something simple. He drank slower than Ryan, but more than he usually did. The edge in his shoulders softened a little. The room stayed steady.

They talked about the movie. Then about nothing related to it. Ryan complained about his dad again, less sharply this time. Harvey listened and nodded. He didn't offer advice. Ryan didn't seem to want it.

Partway through the second round, Harvey felt his phone vibrate. He glanced at it.

Olivia.

You around tonight?

He typed back.

Out with Ryan. Maybe later

A minute passed.

I'm nearby if you are

He hesitated, then replied.

We're at a bar on Clark

She sent a thumbs-up and nothing else.

Ryan noticed the phone. "Work."

"No," Harvey said. "Someone I know."

Ryan raised an eyebrow but didn't push.

They finished their drinks. Ryan ordered another for himself. Harvey didn't. He felt loose but present, the city humming around him without pressing in.

Olivia came in a little later, spotted them, and walked over. She smiled when she saw Harvey, then nodded at Ryan.

"Hey," she said.

"This is my cousin," Harvey said. "Ryan."

"Olivia," she replied.

Ryan stood, a little unsteady, and shook her hand. "Nice to meet you."

She sat on the empty stool between them for a minute, then slid to the end so they weren't crowded. She ordered something light and took a small sip.

They talked about nothing important. How the bar used to be better. A place down the street that closed. Ryan made a comment about the music being wrong for the room. Olivia laughed. Harvey listened.

Ryan watched them more than he needed to. Not suspicious. Just noticing.

After a while, Olivia checked the time. "I should head out."

"Yeah," Harvey said.

She stood, leaned in briefly, and said goodbye. No hug. No pause. Just normal.

When she left, Ryan turned back to his drink.

"She seems… complicated," he said.

Harvey looked at him. "She's not."

Ryan shrugged. "Didn't mean it like that."

They paid and walked home. Ryan talked more on the way back. Harvey listened. The city felt slightly tilted but manageable.

At the apartment, Ryan dropped onto the couch and kicked his shoes off.

"You good," he asked.

"Yeah," Harvey said.

Ryan nodded and closed his eyes without another word.

Harvey stood in the kitchen for a moment, then went to his room. He lay down fully dressed and stared at the ceiling until the room steadied again.

Nothing about the night felt significant. No turning point. No moment to hold onto.

Just time spent somewhere else, with people who didn't need him to be anything in particular.

In the morning, the apartment smelled like stale beer and coffee. Ryan groaned from the couch.

Harvey stood at the counter, pouring water, already feeling the day lining itself up again.

Whatever space the night had created didn't last long.

But it had existed.

And that was enough to notice.
