Chapter 14 - Chapter-14:fault lines

Morning arrived quietly at the campsite.

Mist hung low in the air ,the kind that made everything look softer than it really was.

Christopher stood near the window, tying his shoelaces, when his phone buzzed.

A message from his father.

Focus. Remember why you're there.

He exhaled slowly and locked the screen.

Outside, Zia walked with her friends toward breakfast.

She laughed at something one of them said ,but the sound felt distant ever to her own ears.

Her phone buzzed too.

Jason .

Call me when you're free.

She didn't reply.

At breakfast, Sofee made sure to sit beside Christopher again.

She talked animatedly passing him things ,leaning just a little closer than necessary.

"You didn't sleep well,"She said .I could tell".

"I'm fine. "Christopher replied, polite but firm.

Leo sat across from them, eyes sharp.

Ethan noticed the tension and tried to lighten the mood with a joke ,but it landed awkwardly.

Across the room,Zia watched.

She told herself it didn't matter.

But it did.

Later that afternoon, the group split for activities Zia found herself walking beside Christopher along a quiet trail, teachers visible but far enough away.

"This place feels unreal ,"She said .

He nodded, "like a pause button. "

She looked at him then .

"Do you ever wish you could stay in the pause ?"

Christopher smiled faintly. "All the time ."

For a moment ,it felt like they were the only two people there.

Until Sofee's voice cut through the air.

"Christopher! There you are ."

She joined them, breathless, eyes flicking briefly to Zia.

"We are supposed to meet the others. "

Zia stepped back instinctively.

"I should go too."

Christopher watched her leave, something unsettled forming in his chest .

That evening, Zia finally called Jason.

"You didn't reply all day ."he said immediately.

"I was busy ."She answered.

There was a pause.

Then ."You're changing Zia ."

Her fingers tightened around the phone .

"I'm just ....figuring things out."

Jason's tone hardened slightly,

"Don't forget who's been there for you ."

The call ended with silence heavier than words.

Back at the dorms, Christopher sat with Leo outside.

"You okay?" Leo asked quietly.

Christopher hesitated. "Do you ever feel like you're standing on a Crack...and if you move wrong, everything breaks ?"

Leo looked at him for a long moment.

"Yeah ," he said softly, "every day ."

They sat there ,neither saying what they were really thinking .

In her room ,Zia lay awake, staring at the ceiling,

Sofee's closeness.

Jason's pressure.

Christopher's quiet presence.

The fault lines were there now.

Invisible, but growing.

And soon---

Someone would have to choose where they stood.
