Chapter 2 - Chapter -2

The school bell rang softer ,

like the school itself wasn't in a hurry.

The classroom slowly settled---

Chairs scraping ,bags dropping,

teachers pretending not to notice

the low voices at the back.

Christopher leaned forward on his desk,

Pen spinning lazily between his fingers.

"Do you ever feel," Nathan whispered,

"that school is just one long loop ?"

Christopher smiled.

"Better than home."

Nathan snorted.

Leo looked away.

Christopher laughed easily, the kind of laugh that made people think he had nothing weighing him down.

At school he didn't.

Zia sat two rows ahead.

She listened carefully,

Wrote neatly,

answered when asked.

Perfect.

Her phone vibrated inside her bag.

She didn't check it.

She already knew.

Jason never liked being ignored.

She focused harder on the board, as if concentration could silence thoughts.

"Group work,"the teacher announced.

Groans filled the room.

"Christopher Hale, "

the teacher said ,scanning the list,

"You'll work with zia Harrington. "

A small pause followed.

Not dramatic.

Just enough to be noticed.

Christopher glanced up---

Really looked this time.

Grey hair.

Soft posture.

Calm eyes.

" Okay," he said simple.

They moved their chair closer.

No awkwardness.

No spark.

Just two students sharing space.

"Do you have the last page notes?"

Zia asked quietly.

Christopher nodded and slid his notebook across.

"Yeah .sorry if it's messy. "

She took her head.

"It's not."

Neat handwriting.

Careful margins.

She noticed that.

Christopher noticed the way she returned it gently, like it mattered.

" thanks, "he said.

Zia smiled.

Small.

Polite .

And that was it.

After class,

Christopher and his friends gathered near the stairs.

Nathan was already laughing about something stupid, acting it out loudly.

"Bro , lower your voice, "Evan warned.

Too late.

"Mr Hale, "

a sharp voice cut through the noise.

Their teacher stood behind them ,arms crossed.

Christopher sighed internally.

" yes sir ?"

"Since you all seem to have extra energy, "

the teacher said calmly,

"You can stay back and clean the lab tables. "

Nathan's face dropped.

Leo bit his lip to stop smiling.

Christopher nodded.

"Understood sir,"

They cleaned while joking,

Water splashing,

Chalk dust flying,

Nathan complained nonstop.

Evan lectured him .

Leo worked silently beside Christopher.

"You don't mind, do you?" Leo asked softly.

Christopher shrugged.

"It's fine."

And it was.

Moments like these...

Laughing, being careless,

Being normal .

They mattered more than grades.

Later ,outside the school gate,

They finally escaped.

Cold drinks.

Street food.

Random conversations.

For a while,

Christopher forgot everything else.

Then his phone buzzed.

Dad.

He didn't answer.

Leo noticed.

He always did.

Zia walked past them with her friends.

She didn't stop.

Didn't look back.

But she heard the laughter .

She wondered what it felt like to be that free.
