Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: COFFEE AND SMALL LIES

I didn't expect him to text first.

But when my phone lit up the next morning, my chest tightened in a way that felt too familiar.

Daniel:

Did you sleep at all?

I smiled at the screen before answering.

Me:

Not really. You?

There was a pause — longer than usual.

Daniel:

Enough to know I want to see you again.

Simple. Honest. Dangerous.

We met later that afternoon at a small café tucked between a bookstore and a florist. Daniel was already there when I arrived, seated by the window, fingers wrapped loosely around a mug he hadn't touched.

He stood when he saw me.

"You look tired," he said gently.

"So do you," I replied.

We smiled at each other like we were sharing a private joke no one else could hear.

The conversation came easily — lighter than the night before, but not shallow. He asked about my work, my favorite way to waste time, what I'd do if I could disappear for a week with no responsibilities.

"And you?" I asked. "What would you do?"

He hesitated.

"Rest," he said finally. "From myself."

I studied him over the rim of my cup. "That sounds… heavy."

He shrugged. "Some people carry more than they show."

I wanted to ask what he was carrying.

Instead, I said, "You hide it well."

His smile didn't quite reach his eyes.

Halfway through our coffee, his phone buzzed.

I noticed because everything in him changed — just slightly. His shoulders tensed. His jaw set. He glanced at the screen and turned the phone face down without answering.

"Everything okay?" I asked, keeping my voice casual.

"Yes," he said quickly. Too quickly.

Then, softer, "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For being distracted."

I nodded, even though the apology felt misplaced.

We talked again, but something had shifted. Not distance — caution. Like he was choosing his words more carefully now, trimming pieces away before they could slip out.

When we stood to leave, he hesitated near the door.

"I should tell you something," he said.

My pulse quickened. "Okay."

He exhaled slowly. "I might have to leave the city. Not permanently. Just… soon."

The words landed harder than I expected.

"Oh," I said. "Why?"

He met my eyes, and for a moment I thought he would finally say it. Whatever it was.

Instead, he said, "It's complicated."

Of course it was.

"I didn't want to pretend this was casual if it isn't," he added. "You deserve honesty. Even if it's incomplete."

I appreciated the effort — even as part of me wondered what incomplete honesty really meant.

Outside the café, the air was cool and bright. We stood there awkwardly, neither of us ready to leave.

"Can I see you again?" he asked.

"Yes," I said, surprising myself with how sure it sounded.

Relief crossed his face, quickly followed by something heavier.

As he walked away, I noticed he'd left something behind on the table.

A folded piece of paper.

I picked it up, intending to return it later — until I saw the name printed at the top.

West Consulting.

My stomach tightened.

I didn't know why yet.

I only knew that the man I was falling for was still standing in the shadow of a life he hadn't told me about.

And somehow, I had a feeling that when it finally caught up to him…

I'd be standing right in the middle of it.

I slipped the paper into my bag, my heart racing.

Some truths don't announce themselves loudly.

They wait to be discovered.

Daniel is hiding something — and Aurora has just found the first clue.
