Chapter 13 - public Masks, Private Wars

Public Masks, Private Wars

Power loved the spotlight.

Elena understood that now.

The charity gala had been announced less than forty-eight hours earlier—too fast, too convenient, too strategic. When Alessandro informed her they would be attending, his expression was unreadable, but his tone told her everything.

"This is a test," he said. "They want to see how visible you are."

"And how controlled," Elena replied calmly.

He didn't disagree.

The ballroom shimmered with excess—crystal chandeliers, designer gowns, carefully curated smiles. Old money mingled with new danger. Cameras flashed constantly, hungry for a narrative.

Elena stepped inside beside Alessandro, her hand resting lightly on his arm. She wore midnight blue, elegant and sharp, her posture flawless.

She could feel eyes on her.

Not admiration.

Calculation.

Victor Hale stood near the center of the room, speaking animatedly with investors, his presence loud in a way that demanded attention. When his gaze landed on Elena, his smile widened slowly.

Like he'd been expecting her.

Alessandro's hand tightened slightly at her waist. "Stay close."

She tilted her head toward him. "Watch instead."

Before he could question her, Elena stepped away.

Straight toward Victor Hale.

Alessandro stiffened.

"Elena," he warned quietly.

She didn't stop.

Victor's smile turned predatory as she approached. "Mrs. Romano," he said smoothly. "You look… unbothered."

"I am," Elena replied, offering a polite smile. "You should try it sometime."

His laugh was low. "Bold. I admire that."

"I'm not here for admiration," she said. "I'm here to clarify something."

Victor's eyes flicked briefly toward Alessandro, then back to her. "By all means."

"You're circling my marriage like it's a business opportunity," Elena said calmly. "It's not."

Victor leaned in slightly. "Everything is a business opportunity."

"Then let me make this clear," she continued, voice steady. "I am not leverage. Not bait. Not a weakness."

He studied her closely now. "Interesting. You speak like someone with authority."

"I speak like someone who knows her value."

A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face.

"That confidence," he said softly, "can be dangerous."

"So can underestimating women," Elena replied. "Ask the men who've tried."

Victor laughed again, but this time it was tighter. "You've just made this very public."

"That was the point."

She turned and walked away without waiting for a response.

Alessandro was already moving toward her.

"What was that?" he asked under his breath, eyes dark.

"Control," she said simply. "I took it."

"You made yourself visible."

"I made myself untouchable," she corrected.

Before he could respond, murmurs rippled through the room.

Phones lifted. Whispers spread.

Elena followed Alessandro's gaze to the large screens lining the ballroom.

A headline flashed.

WINTERS-ROMANO ALLIANCE UNDER INVESTIGATION?

Her pulse spiked—but she didn't flinch.

Victor Hale's doing.

"They've launched the narrative," Alessandro said quietly. "Fast."

"Good," Elena replied.

He looked at her sharply. "Good?"

She turned to face him fully. "If they wanted silence, they'd have stayed quiet. This means they're nervous."

"You planned this," he realized.

"I anticipated it," she said. "There's a difference."

For the first time since he'd met her, Alessandro looked… unsettled.

Not angry.

Impressed.

Lucia Romano appeared beside them, her expression tight. "This will cause complications."

Elena met her gaze. "Or clarity."

Lucia studied her for a long moment, then nodded once. "You may be more Romano than you realize."

That night, back at the estate, the tension followed them into the quiet halls.

Alessandro closed the door to his study behind them.

"You took a risk tonight," he said.

"So did you—bringing me into this world," Elena replied.

He stepped closer. "I protect what's mine."

"And I protect myself," she said evenly. "Which means protecting us."

A heavy silence fell.

Then Alessandro exhaled slowly. "You challenged Victor Hale publicly. That wasn't in my plan."

She met his gaze. "Then update your plans."

Something dangerous flickered between them.

"You don't wait for permission," he said.

"No," she agreed. "I wait for opportunity."

He watched her like she was a puzzle he hadn't finished solving.

Finally, he said quietly, "You could have told me."

"I wanted to see if you trusted me," she admitted.

"And?"

She stepped closer. "Do you?"

A beat.

Then he nodded once. "Yes."

The word settled between them—heavy, final, real.

Elena felt the shift.

This wasn't just alliance anymore.

It was partnership.

And somewhere out there, Victor Hale was realizing he hadn't just provoked Alessandro Romano—

He'd awakened Elena Winters.
