"Amakusa. What did you just say?"
Amakusa Touma's immediate superior, Sayami Kaoru, adjusted her black-rimmed glasses. She stared at the scruffy middle-aged man in front of her with a sharp, interrogating gaze, her tone carrying a faint hostility.
"Say it again. Clearly. Word for word."
Sayami Kaoru, an eighteen-year-old Hime Miko, wore a white shirt and tie, a suit jacket, and trousers-not a skirt, but men's suit pants.
She had a beautiful face and an ethereal presence. Her figure was slender, without a trace of excess fat.
If this androgynous appearance were paired with a male name, she could easily be mistaken for a beautiful boy straight out of a shojo manga-unrealistic to the point of fiction.
Yet Sayami Kaoru was unmistakably female.
And even after her gender was made clear, girls infatuated with her still gathered around her in endless numbers at the academy.
Sayami Kaoru. A third-year high school student.
"Yes! But, Section Chief Saya, I thought I already explained it clearly enough."
"Hm?"
"Nothing!" Sensing the displeasure in her voice, the perceptive Amakusa Touma instantly straightened his back, fixing his gaze on the office wall behind her.
He repeated everything, word for word, without omission.
"When I left Mariya Yuri's shrine, I encountered the Seventh Campione. He has a typical Oriental appearance, accompanied by a silver-haired maid and a beautiful blonde girl."
"According to Mariya's spiritual vision, the gods he has slain total at least five: Cupid, Melqart, and Verethragna on Sardinia two days ago, as well as Amaterasu ĹŚmikami and Susanoo-no-Mikoto."
"Hmph."
Hearing the unchanged account, Sayami Kaoru let out a quiet scoff and did not press him further.
Still, a question surfaced in her mind.
Susanoo-no-Mikoto?
That old man had secluded himself in the Otherworld thousands of years ago, secretly steering the nation's course.
How could a Campione who slew Susanoo suddenly appear?
And appear with a record of five slain gods.
Was that even possible?
Even those reckless enough to challenge the gods, after becoming Campione, usually managed to kill only one Heretic God in their first battle.
There was only a single historical record of someone killing a god by exploiting a god's own body.
She had never heard of a Campione slaying three Heretic Gods at the outset-let alone five at once.
It completely violated the common sense of the magic world.
And even the Campione world.
If she didn't have absolute confidence in Amakusa Touma and in Mariya Yuri's spiritual vision, she would have suspected the two of colluding to deceive her.
As for encountering five Heretic Gods within just a few days...
Sayami Kaoru would rather believe the other party had died and resurrected several times.
Phew.
Seeing that Sayami Kaoru accepted his words, Amakusa Touma secretly exhaled, wiping the sweat from his palms.
"Additionally, it can be confirmed that this King possesses Authorities related to mind-reading and large-scale manipulation of humans."
"It's unclear whether there are usage conditions, but there are no obvious signs when the ability activates. He can completely control me without a sound."
"According to the King himself, he can turn everyone in the History Compilation Committee into his 'toy' at once."
"Before I left, he ordered the Committee to stay away from his territory, or he would take action."
"He also requested Seishuuin Ena of the Seishuuin family to meet him. The purpose is unknown."
Sayami Kaoru supported her chin with both hands. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she suppressed the shock and gravity in her heart.
"Now tell me. Can you confirm that you are not currently under that King's control, and that you are saying all this of your own free will?"
"No problem!"
"Then have you informed the Seishuuin family?"
A dull thud echoed in Amakusa Touma's chest, but his expression remained steady.
"Not yet."
"Then hurry up and go."
"Yes!"
With a respectful reply, Amakusa Touma fled the office as if granted amnesty, lamenting inwardly.
When will this suffering ever end?
Once he left, only Sayami Kaoru remained.
"Oriental appearance... so the possibility of him being a native Campione can't be ruled out."
"But this King's personality..."
"Is he simply difficult to deal with, or does he bear hostility toward the Committee?"
"We haven't done anything unforgivable. So where does his displeasure come from?"
"Could it be that he had contact with us before becoming a Campione?"
Muttering to herself, Sayami Kaoru reached for the desk phone, intending to notify the Seishuuin family.
Her hand stopped halfway.
She withdrew it as if burned, a trace of lingering fear flashing through her eyes.
"That King can read minds. He may obtain information directly from Seishuuin Ena."
"If he discovers our attempts to gather intelligence, he might act immediately."
"This matter should be handled solely by Seishuuin Ena and Mariya Yuri."
"The Committee must not interfere at all."
"And I need to go warn that idiot Amakusa... tsk."
Thinking of the scruffy man who had just run out, Sayami Kaoru stood up, clicking her tongue with faint disdain.
Amakusa Touma had been dismissed around ten in the morning.
Before sunset that same day, Seishuuin Ena-summoned by Hiro-arrived at the Mariya Shrine and was led by Grafiya to him.
"King. Seishuuin Ena has arrived as ordered."
Her smooth, long black hair and composed demeanor gave Hiro a sense of approachability.
She wasn't wearing shrine maiden attire.
Instead, she wore a white shirt, a light brown waistcoat, and a short skirt-something resembling a high school uniform.
On the floor to her right lay a slender black cloth bag she had just set down.
"Hm."
After a brief glance at the pale curve of her neck, Hiro's gaze shifted to the cloth bag.
He couldn't see its contents.
Yet a thought surfaced naturally.
This item will benefit Susanoo.
There was no logic behind it. Just a feeling.
But at his current level, such feelings had already evolved into something akin to Instinct or Heart's Eye.
They could not be ignored.
Just like with Verethragna days ago.
If he hadn't trusted that sensation then, he might not have even had the chance to activate Phoenix Incarnation before being pierced by the red spear.
"The item has been delivered. You may return."
Hiro reached out, drawing the cloth bag into his hand.
He nodded calmly at the girl whose face showed clear surprise.
