Chapter 48 - Sorry, Blade Weapons Are Ineffective Against Me

"CCG, a government combat organization... why would it invite an ordinary high school student like me?"

Looking at the calm young version of Arima Kishou nearby, Hiro rested his right hand on his chin.

At the same time, the sixth-Tier golden luck extraction unfolded silently.

"Current mission: Defeat Arima Kishou. Remaining time reduced by 30 minutes."

From Arima Kishou's respectful address and the mention of "superiors' instructions," Hiro guessed that some high-ranking CCG official-or even the so-called "V"-had noticed his abnormality and sent Arima to recruit him.

Considering the timing, Arima Kishou wasn't yet a Special Class Investigator; otherwise, he wouldn't be handling this kind of errand.

"That is the request of my superiors. I am not privy to the specific reasons."

You don't even know why you're here?!

Suppressing his words, Hiro paused, then tentatively asked:

"Then, what about salary and benefits?"

Although he didn't feel much goodwill toward the CCG, one fact was undeniable: they played a crucial role in mitigating ghoul damage to humans, especially in Tokyo.

Compared to Saitama Prefecture, where ghoul activity was minimal, Tokyo reported ghouls eating humans, cannibalism, and rampages almost daily.

It was like heaven and earth.

Yet people flocked to Tokyo, replenishing the ghouls' "food supply."

"Please take a look."

Arima Kishou stepped forward, producing a few A4 sheets from his side bag and handing them to Hiro.

After Hiro took the papers, Arima stepped back, respectful though the reason was unknown.

Examining the documents, Hiro raised an eyebrow.

Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) Special Operations Personnel...

After a few seconds, he twitched slightly.

The content was unbelievable-not harsh, but lenient, even including unrestricted "anti-bullying" clauses.

No mandatory missions, no personal restrictions, no confidentiality agreements.

Students could prioritize school.

Rank, authority, and salary depended on individual strength.

The person making this judgment? Arima Kishou, a First-Class Investigator.

"This... you guys, the CCG, and Washuu Yoshitoki are serious about this?"

Whoosh~ Whoosh~

Hiro flicked the papers in his right hand toward Arima.

"Of course. The CCG has long sought off-the-books personnel like you under these standards."

The 19-year-old nodded calmly.

"With the nation's finances, supporting dozens or hundreds of off-the-books personnel is no problem. As long as even one gives back to society, the investment is worthwhile."

Hiro frowned, putting the papers away.

"If that's the contract, I agree. How do you judge my strength? Melee combat?"

"Since I'm more skilled with swords, I prefer melee. But the final decision is yours. If your 'talent' isn't sword-based, I can adjust."

Arima unslung the black cloth bag from his back, revealing a sword case.

Talent... yes, referring to a Sacred Gear.

Watching Arima draw a sword over a meter long, Hiro thought inwardly:

"What a coincidence. My 'talent' happens to be a katana."

He extended his right hand. Dead March-Yatsufusa appeared in his palm.

The two stood several meters apart.

"Before we begin, one question. Could you enlighten me?"

"Please."

"Why is it that Saitama Prefecture and Tokyo are so close, yet ghoul activity here is almost none, while Tokyo is severe? Your headquarters is in Tokyo, and there seem to be many off-the-books personnel."

"..."

Arima studied him silently, weighing his response.

Finally:

"The difference lies in leadership policy. Here, the leader of Saitama Prefecture adheres to an extermination policy for attacking ghouls. The leader of Tokyo... takes no action, even prohibiting interference between ghouls and humans, regarding them as the same race."

The Tokyo leader seems to be the youkai headed by Yasaka, the "Nine-Tailed Grand General"?

For youkai, humans and ghouls are the same race... okay, no, wait...

In the original work, that was Kyoto. Tokyo's leader wasn't mentioned.

After listening, Hiro understood and resolved to ask Rias about the inside story later.

"I see."

"May we begin?"

"Of course, you may come at any time."

Hiro held Yatsufusa in his right hand, standing straight, adopting no defensive stance, waiting for Arima.

Is this posture looking down on me?

Arima frowned slightly. At 19, he hadn't yet reached the mature mindset of his 29-year-old self.

Spurred by slight emotion, Arima stomped, using the recoil to rush forward.

The long sword in his right hand-Yukimura 1/3-slashed down toward Hiro's right shoulder.

Whoosh-

Air tore beside Hiro's ear. He didn't dodge or defend.

The gap was too large.

No skills were needed to overwhelm the current Arima Kishou.

After a moment, Hiro's left hand grasped the blade at a speed Arima couldn't perceive, while Yatsufusa rested lightly against the side of the blue-haired boy's neck.

Seeing Arima's constricted pupils, Hiro smiled lightly, canceled Yatsufusa, and released the blade.

"Sorry, blade weapons are ineffective against me."
