Chapter 16 - Shadows of the City

( ARC 2 PH :2 : Questioner )

Rain poured steadily. As Anie looked out of her window, the entire city seemed shrouded under a gray veil. Lights flowed like waterfalls, vehicles moved along the streets in slow motion, and the holograms from the mega screens flickered with lifelike motion everything appeared normal, yet each moment carried an unnatural weight.

Her heart rose from the bed, a chill settled in her chest she could feel the city changing.

In the college hall, Anie stood with Mira. Classes had ended, yet the students' chatter didn't seem to reach them.

"Do you feel it?" Mira asked.

"What?" Anie turned silently.

"The city… it's watching us," Mira said.

Anie paused for a moment, then in a soft voice whispered, "Mira, have you heard those words? Hunters… they will find us. It's inevitable."

Mira looked at her, fear in her eyes but determination as well.

"Whatever it is, they seem to want to know about her power. Some people already know she's not ordinary," Mira said.

Anie thought, a small pang settling in her side.

"What should we do?" Mira asked.

Anie stayed silent. "Do what we always do… but carefully. The hunt may come again. We need to be ready."

Turning toward the college canteen, a small incident caught their attention. A student suddenly collapsed; people crowded around, anxious. Anie's eyes scanned quietly there was a brief, unusual pattern in the air around the student, a faint anomaly that lasted only a moment, but her heart tightened.

"Is everyone okay?" she asked, moving closer.

Each student nodded nervously. Anie's mind understood that this was not a simple accident someone was getting closer, again.

From the students, a small voice asked, "Whose… power is this?"

Anie only shook her head silently. No answer was needed; she knew this was no ordinary event.

Later, at the bus stop, in the older part of the city, a colorful shutter caught her eye. Graffiti painted across it: WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?

Her heart thudded in rhythm. Hunters. Watchers. The city. No one else is observing anyone perhaps only her.

A new Called character made their first shadowed appearance.

a figure walking through the rain. Not fully visible, yet her instincts recognized the presence. He was observing her power. She felt it, deeply.

Outside the college doors, she looked at Mira.

"Who… is that?" Anie asked.

"I don't know… but he's not here for pleasure," Mira replied.

Mira's hand brushed Anie's, a subtle pressure, a silent assurance they needed trust here.Rain splashed across the streets, puddles forming everywhere. Anie scanned her surroundings: people at the bus stop, faces on the mega screens, everything. The shadows of the city stretched all around her.

a car horn blared nearby, and in that sudden distraction, she glimpsed a figure moving silently on the street. Her intuition screamed Hunters were very close.

Speaking quietly to Mira, she said, "We have to be careful. They're trying to find us. But this new Called character… why is he here?"

Mira's eyes reflected thoughtfulness. "We don't know, Anie. But he's pulling them toward us. We have to watch carefully."

Rain continued to fall. Streets, streetlights, bus stops it all seemed like a philosophical observation, as if the city itself were breathing. Her heart was a mixture of excitement, fear, and doubt.

Back at her home, Anie leaned close to her window. A message appeared:

"They are closer than you think."

Her hand glowed faintly, heart racing. Eli was not there. No answers, no help. But she stood firm. She would not run. She looked out the city was watching her, every step, every decision.
