Chapter 16 - When Time Reached Zero

The moment Seo-yeon finished speaking…

The gold ring pulsed again.

Once.

Slow.

Heavy.

Like the beat of a distant drum.

Then something strange happened.

The clock above the café counter ticked.

11:59:57

11:59:58

11:59:59

And when the second hand touched 12:00…

All four rings pulsed at the exact same moment.

Gold.

Green.

Blue.

Dark.

A quiet flash of light spread across the café like a ripple in water.

Not bright enough for others to notice clearly.

But strong enough for us to feel.

My chest tightened.

For a brief second—

The world around me became… slow.

The soldiers outside the café door looked frozen.

The falling glass from the broken lights hung in the air.

Even Seo-yeon's hair, moving from the wind of the opening door, stopped mid-motion.

And in that strange silence…

Something else appeared.

A flicker.

Like a memory trying to break through.

I saw a battlefield.

But it wasn't modern.

No guns.

No vehicles.

Just dust.

Armor.

And warriors standing in a wide circle.

Seven of them.

Each wearing a ring.

One stood at the center.

A man with calm eyes.

The others looked toward him like soldiers waiting for an order.

Then the vision shattered.

The café returned.

Time moved again.

Glass fell.

Soldiers rushed forward.

And Seo-yeon grabbed my sleeve.

"Ji-hoon!"

I blinked.

"…Did you see that?"

She stared at me.

"See what?"

Before I could answer—

Hae-in gasped softly.

"My ring…"

We looked at her hand.

The green ring was glowing brighter than before.

Not aggressively.

But steadily.

Like a heartbeat.

Tae-jun noticed it too.

"That's new."

Dae-hyun leaned forward slightly.

His voice low.

"…It only does that when the connection is strengthening."

Seo-yeon frowned.

"Connection between who?"

No one answered.

Because the soldiers finally broke through the café door.

The glass shattered as they rushed inside.

Heavy boots hit the floor.

Weapons raised.

"MOVE!"

Tae-jun grabbed a chair and threw it toward them.

The soldiers ducked.

The chair smashed against the wall.

Seo-yeon looked at me.

"Still working on that plan?"

I sighed.

"Still."

Then Hae-in spoke again.

Her voice quieter.

But serious.

"I think… the rings just did something."

Dae-hyun nodded slowly.

"They did."

Seo-yeon crossed her arms.

"Care to explain?"

Dae-hyun looked toward the broken café window.

His expression thoughtful.

"Midnight."

Tae-jun frowned.

"So?"

Dae-hyun tapped the table once.

"Time reached zero."

Seo-yeon blinked.

"…Zero of what?"

Dae-hyun gave a small smile.

"That's the interesting question."

Before anyone could say more—

Another soldier rushed forward.

I stepped in front of Seo-yeon.

His punch came fast.

But training never really leaves you.

I caught his arm and pushed him aside.

He crashed into a table.

Tae-jun grabbed another soldier and shoved him into the counter.

Coffee machines exploded with steam.

Seo-yeon pulled Hae-in toward the back door.

"Come on!"

But before we could reach it—

The officer from earlier stepped into our path again.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't rushed.

He looked… satisfied.

"I was wondering when it would happen."

Seo-yeon stopped.

"What?"

The officer pointed to the rings.

"Synchronization."

Dae-hyun's smile disappeared.

"You shouldn't know that word."

The officer shrugged.

"We know more than you think."

My head pulsed again.

Another memory flickered.

A training yard.

Soldiers running drills.

A younger version of me standing with another man.

A voice shouting:

"Seven rings. Seven guardians."

The memory vanished again.

Seo-yeon noticed my expression.

"Ji-hoon…?"

I shook my head.

"Nothing."

But it wasn't nothing.

The officer stepped closer.

"You're beginning to remember."

Tae-jun stepped between us.

"Back off."

The officer ignored him.

His eyes remained on me.

"Tell me something, Sergeant."

I didn't respond.

He continued calmly.

"When you look at her…"

He pointed at Seo-yeon.

"…does anything feel familiar?"

Seo-yeon's eyebrows shot up.

"Excuse me?"

I didn't answer.

Because something did feel familiar.

Not her face.

Not her voice.

But the ring.

The gold ring.

My chest tightened again.

A distant memory whispered inside my mind.

Not clear.

Just fragments.

Protect her.

Even if the world burns.

The voice disappeared.

Seo-yeon crossed her arms.

"Okay, that's creepy."

Dae-hyun suddenly stepped forward.

His tone sharper now.

"That's enough."

The officer looked at him.

"Subject Four."

Dae-hyun rolled his eyes.

"You really like that name."

The officer's voice became colder.

"You were not meant to survive."

Tae-jun looked between them.

"…Now I'm curious."

But Dae-hyun shook his head.

"Not tonight."

Outside the café—

Sirens echoed in the distance.

Seo-yeon sighed in relief.

"Police?"

Dae-hyun shook his head.

"Probably not."

The officer looked toward the door.

His expression changed slightly.

Then he spoke into his collar device.

"Stand down."

The soldiers immediately stopped moving.

Seo-yeon blinked.

"…What?"

The officer looked back at us.

"This encounter was merely observation."

Tae-jun stared at him.

"You brought an army to 'observe'?"

The officer smiled slightly.

"We confirmed what we needed."

He looked at the rings again.

"Four active."

My stomach tightened.

He continued calmly.

"That means the others will begin moving soon."

Seo-yeon frowned.

"Others?"

The officer didn't answer.

Instead, he turned and walked toward the door.

The soldiers followed him.

Before leaving—

He stopped beside me.

And whispered something quietly.

"Your grandmother knew."

My heart skipped.

Seo-yeon stepped closer.

"What did he say?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because the words were still echoing in my mind.

Your grandmother knew.

Seo-yeon looked confused.

"My grandmother?"

Dae-hyun's expression darkened slightly.

Hae-in whispered,

"Maybe… the journal."

Seo-yeon froze.

The old journal.

The one her grandmother left behind.

The one filled with strange symbols.

Ancient drawings.

And pages about rings.

Seo-yeon slowly looked down at her gold ring.

Then back at us.

Her voice became quiet.

"I think…"

She swallowed.

"…my grandmother was trying to warn us."

Tae-jun sighed.

"Well that's comforting."

Dae-hyun looked toward the dark street outside the café.

His voice low.

"Not warn."

We looked at him.

He continued.

"Prepare."

Outside—

The military vehicles disappeared into the night.

But the strange feeling inside my chest didn't fade.

Because the rings had pulsed together.

For the first time.

And somewhere in the city…

Something else had probably awakened.

Something we hadn't seen yet.

And if the officer was right—

Four rings active meant something terrible.

Because there were supposed to be seven.

And we had only found four.

Which meant…

Three more people were out there.

And if someone else was hunting the ring holders…

They would find them soon.

I looked at Seo-yeon's ring again.

The gold light had faded.

But the warmth remained.

And for the first time…

I wondered something dangerous.

What if the rings weren't just reconnecting us?

What if they were calling us back to a war that never ended?
