Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: The Call to Battle

Chapter 50: The Call to Battle

Time flew.

In the blink of an eye, a month had passed.

In that month, Shinra remained the talk of Konoha, the subject of endless speculation over meals. The news of him becoming Tsunade's apprentice was widely circulated, adding another layer of prestige to his name. The Senju clan, though diminished, felt a flicker of pride at the association.

However, another, darker current ran beneath the surface. Rumors whispered by hidden mouths painted Shinra as an outer-village spy, a snake in the grass with ill intentions who should be eliminated. Shinra knew the source of these whispers—the Uchiha, nursing their grudge—but the time for a reckoning was not yet right.

He was busy. Every day was a relentless cycle of training, honing his body, his new sword art, and the intricacies of the Strength of a Hundred technique. He had even begun to synthesize his powers, fusing the principles of vibration, his inherited bisento mastery, and the explosive chakra enhancement into a devastating, original sword style. He was confident this new art, born from Whitebeard's foundation and his own innovation, would rival, if not surpass, the famed Hatake style. The impending war, he felt, would be the perfect stage for its debut.

Yet, even as he trained for conflict, he savored the fragile peace. His afternoons with Kushina and Mikoto grew sweeter, their bond deepening from held hands to stolen kisses—a historic breakthrough. He remembered Kushina's first kiss: the normally boisterous girl had melted into a shy, trembling, utterly pliant mess, her face burning. Mikoto, ever the picture of serene grace, had simply accepted it with a soft blush and a calm, knowing smile.

But all fragile peaces must end.

The terrible war had already begun in the shadows, in places the light didn't reach. While not yet a continent-wide conflagration, border skirmishes had intensified. Provocations and small, bloody clashes between nations were now a daily occurrence.

On this particular day, as Shinra trained in his woods, the long-absent Hatake Sakumo reappeared.

"Kid," Sakumo called from atop a boulder, his eyes burning with a fierce, expectant light as he looked down at the sweat-drenched Shinra. "It's time for you to shine."

Hearing those words, Shinra's lips peeled back in a fierce grin. His blood, momentarily stilled by routine, ignited into a boil.

This moment…

He had been waiting.

And the massive blade leaning against a nearby tree…

It was thirsty.

Konoha. Hokage's Office.

Sarutobi Hiruzen puffed on his pipe, the smoke doing little to mask the grim cast of his features as he studied the top-secret scroll before him.

Two others stood before his desk.

A man and a woman.

The woman wore the cyan armor of a combat medic, yet it couldn't conceal a striking, athletic figure. The Senju clan crest on her pauldron was prominently displayed. Her name was Senju Natsuki, a powerful genius of the dwindling clan, proficient in medical ninjutsu and a skilled user of Wood Release.

The man was Hyuga Hizashi, the young patriarch of the Hyuga clan, his pale eyes calm and intense.

Both were a term older than Shinra. Their strength was proven, having long since attained the rank of jounin and completed numerous high-difficulty missions.

Yet, their faces now mirrored the Hokage's—etched with grim severity. The office was thick with a palpable, oppressive tension.

Knock. Knock.

The sound broke the heavy silence.

"Enter."

Hiruzen steepled his fingers, a sharp glint in his deep-set eyes.

Shinra and Hatake Sakumo walked in.

"Shinra. You're here." A rare, genuine smile touched Hiruzen's lips at the sight of the prodigy.

Senju Natsuki couldn't help but curl her lip slightly, a flicker of competitive dissatisfaction in her eyes.

"Hokage-sama." Shinra offered a respectful bow.

Hiruzen nodded. Then, his expression hardened into granite once more. A murderous intent, cold and sharp, seemed to radiate from him, making the very air in the room prickle.

The four younger shinobi stiffened, their own expressions shifting to battle-ready focus.

"Good. I now issue a formal appointment." Hiruzen's voice was a low rumble. "Senju Natsuki. Hyuga Hizashi. Shinra. The three of you will form a temporary squad. Your mission: proceed to the border and execute Priority-A Objective. Do you have any objections?"

"None!" The trio responded in unison, a spark of eager battle intent igniting in each of their eyes. Every true genius, it seemed, shared Shinra's hunger for real combat.

Seeing their resolve, Hiruzen gave a firm, satisfied nod. "Good. Now, the mission details. Listen carefully."

He leaned forward. "Our Anbu intelligence network has intercepted top-secret information. Kirigakure is attempting a political maneuver. They have dispatched four of their legendary Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist with the objective to assassinate the wife of the Land of Fire's Daimyo, aiming to pressure and destabilize us."

He let the gravity of that sink in. The Seven Swordsmen were no mere thugs; they were Kiri's elite killing instruments.

"Your task is to intercept and eliminate this threat. I am aware this is an extraordinarily difficult mission for shinobi not yet fully grown. But Konoha needs you now. Can you do it?!"

His voice was a challenge, a gamble placed on the next generation.

"We guarantee the mission's success!" Three voices rang out, firm as steel, confidence cutting through the tension.

Seeing this, a measure of the weight seemed to lift from Hiruzen's shoulders. "Excellent. Prepare yourselves. You depart in thirty minutes. The full mission dossier is in this scroll. Study it on the way."

"Understood!"

As Senju Natsuki and Hyuga Hizashi turned to leave, Shinra spoke again.

"Hokage-sama. I wish to request an addition to the squad. If possible."

Hiruzen and Sakumo blinked in surprise. The other two also turned, looks of puzzlement on their faces.

"Oh? Who do you wish to add?" Hiruzen asked.

A faint, almost predatory smile touched Shinra's lips. He uttered a name none of them expected.

"Might Duy."

"Who?!" Senju Natsuki blurted out, incredulous. She prided herself on knowing every Konoha ninja of note. This 'Might Duy'… she'd never heard of him.

"That 'Eternal Genin'? The one who can only use taijutsu?" Sakumo queried, recognition dawning.

Shinra nodded, a little surprised Sakumo knew of him. "That's the one."

The four listeners stared at Shinra as if he'd lost his mind.

"You can't be serious. A genin? For a mission of this level?" Senju Natsuki's straightforward nature made her voice her disbelief openly.

Shinra didn't bother looking at her. His burning gaze remained fixed on Hiruzen. He spoke each word with deliberate emphasis.

"His strength… is not as 'simple' as his rank suggests."

Hiruzen met Shinra's unwavering, confident eyes. For a long moment, he was silent, weighing the unorthodox request against the trust he'd placed in this extraordinary boy.

Finally, he made his decision.

"Very well. Sakumo, you handle the notification personally. You three, proceed with your preparations. Departure in thirty minutes."

With that, Shinra and the other two filed out.

After they had gone, Hiruzen's expression sank back into deep worry. "Sakumo… was I too hasty? Sending them into the jaws of the Seven Swordsmen?"

Sakumo stood tall, his gaze distant. "True genius is tempered in blood and fire, Hokage-sama. Sheltered forever, they will never become the pillars that hold up the sky."

Hiruzen sighed, a dry, weary sound. "You're right. And that boy Shinra… in terms of pure destructive power, he may already rival us. It's time he was tested in the real crucible."

As he finished speaking, Sakumo vanished to carry out his order.

The Hokage stood alone in the dimming light of his office, looking out the window in the direction the team had gone.

In the fading dusk, for a fleeting moment, the silhouette of the young man with the massive blade overlapped in his mind's eye with the figure of another—the man who had single-handedly forged Konoha, hailed as the God of Shinobi.

The wheel of history was turning. A new generation was stepping onto the stage, ready to be baptized in flame.
