Chapter 88 - Chapter 87 -- The Echo of Past.

Meiji 44 (1911) — Dawn Approaching

Northern Kantō Forest

Kai — Age 16

Sun Hashira

---

Akaza's body trembled beneath Kai's blade.

Not from pain.

From something far worse.

The question still echoed in his skull, gnawing at him, refusing to fade.

Why do you want to become strong?

Who are you fighting for?

Akaza snarled and surged upward, slamming Kai back with brute force. The ground cracked as he regained his footing, eyes burning with fury and something dangerously close to panic.

"Shut up," Akaza growled.

"Don't say things like that."

He attacked again, movements wild now, less refined, more desperate. Each strike carried weight, but the rhythm was broken. His breathing faltered between blows.

Kai noticed immediately.

🔥 Sun Breathing — Sixth Form: Solar Heat Haze

His body vanished into wavering light. Akaza's fist passed through afterimages, missing by fractions of a second. Kai reappeared behind him and drove Akaza into the dirt with a crushing kick.

Akaza roared, flipping backward, landing hard.

Fragments leaked in anyway.

Uninvited.

A hand gripping his sleeve.

Warm.

Small.

A girl smiling up at him despite sickness, despite pain.

Akaza screamed and slammed his fists into the ground, pulverizing stone.

"No!"

The image shattered — but pieces remained.

---

Pinned

Akaza lunged again.

Kai met him head-on.

Their collision shattered what remained of the clearing, trees reduced to splinters, earth torn open. Kai's blade moved in relentless arcs, every strike measured, every step deliberate.

🔥 Sun Breathing — Seventh Form: Beneficent Radiance

The cut severed Akaza's tendons, dropping him to one knee.

Kai didn't let up.

He drove Akaza down, knee pressing into his chest, blade angled at his neck. The pressure was absolute. Akaza strained, muscles screaming, regeneration stalling under the burning edge of Nichirin steel.

Akaza thrashed.

Snarled.

Anger flared bright and ugly.

"I won't lose!" he shouted.

"I refuse!"

The horizon began to lighten.

Just barely.

Akaza saw it.

Fear exploded through him.

---

Panic

"No— no no no!"

Akaza's composure shattered completely. He struck wildly, claws scraping uselessly against Kai's sword, trying to throw him off, trying to escape the weight of the coming dawn.

His breathing became erratic.

The scent of sunlight reached him.

That was when the memories returned.

Not gently.

Violently.

A funeral pyre.

Ash drifting through the air.

A scream torn from his own throat as everything he loved burned away.

"…Koyuki…"

The name slipped out before he could stop it.

Akaza froze.

Tears welled, spilling freely, burning hotter than any wound. His body weakened, resistance crumbling under the weight of what he had tried to erase.

"I… wanted to protect them," he whispered.

Kai didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

Akaza's hands trembled.

"I thought if I became strong enough… nothing could be taken from me again."

Sunlight touched his shoulder.

Akaza gasped as smoke rose from his skin.

---

Final Resistance

"No!"

Anger flared one last time.

Akaza surged upward, forcing Kai back with sheer will. His body burned, flesh peeling, but he didn't care. He attacked with everything he had left, every movement desperate and blazing with battle lust.

💥 Destructive Death — Final Disorder

🔥 Sun Breathing — Eighth Form: Sunflower Thrust

They collided one final time.

The impact split the ground in two.

Akaza staggered.

Kai didn't.

Akaza dropped to his knees, body igniting as the sun fully crested the horizon.

He looked up.

For the first time, his smile wasn't feral.

It was gentle.

"…Thank you," he said quietly.

His body burned away, reduced to ash, carried off by the morning wind.

A man who finally remembered.

---

Elsewhere — Infinity Castle

Muzan Kibutsuji convulsed.

His body slammed into the throne, hands gripping the armrests so tightly they cracked. His breath came in sharp, uneven gasps.

"…No."

His vision swam.

He saw it.

A clearing bathed in dawn.

A blade blazing like the sun.

And a face.

That face.

Muzan screamed.

"Impossible!"

Fear — true fear — crawled up his spine, ancient and paralyzing. Rage followed, boiling, consuming, but it couldn't erase the terror clawing at his heart.

Youriichi.

No.

Not him.

But close enough to make his blood freeze.

Muzan shattered the floor beneath him.

"Kill him," he hissed to the shadows.

"Erase him."

---

Aftermath

Kai stood alone in the ruined forest.

Ash drifted around him, warm morning light washing over scorched earth. His breathing slowed, Sun Breathing easing from his body as exhaustion finally settled in.

He sheathed his blade.

The crows arrived soon after.

Their cries echoed across the clearing, sharp and urgent.

"Upper Rank Three defeated!"

"Confirmed!"

Shock rippled through the Corps.

Hashira paused mid-mission.

Slayers stared skyward in disbelief.

At headquarters, Ubuyashiki smiled quietly, eyes shining with relief and something deeper.

Hope.

Kai turned toward the rising sun.

The war had changed.

And everyone — demon and human alike — could feel it.
