Meiji 42 (1908) — Late Autumn
Kai — Age 16
Butterfly Estate
Morning at the Butterfly Estate no longer felt fragile.
It felt… lived in.
Sunlight filtered through paper screens. The scent of medicinal herbs mingled with rice porridge. Somewhere outside, a crow argued loudly with a Kakushi.
Kai finished washing his hands and stepped into the main hall.
Patients were already awake.
Some stretching carefully.
Some laughing softly.
Some simply breathing—still surprised they were allowed to.
Kanae moved among them like a calm tide, checking bandages, offering gentle words. Shinobu stood near a patient's bedside, adjusting dosage with sharp efficiency—but her tone was lighter than before.
"Drink it all," she said. "Yes, it's bitter. That means it's working."
Mitsuri sat cross-legged on the floor beside a young slayer, animatedly explaining something with wide gestures.
"And then—whoosh!—the demon tried to bite me, but I bent like this!"
The boy stared, starry-eyed. "You're amazing…"
Mitsuri flushed. "Ehehe… thank you!"
Kai watched from the doorway, arms folded.
They're steady, he thought.
Not rushed.
Not burning themselves thin.
This—this—was what progress looked like.

Quiet Morning Ritual
Later, after patients were settled, the four of them shared tea on the veranda.
No one spoke for a while.
Mitsuri swung her legs lazily. Kanae leaned back against a pillar. Shinobu stirred her tea with a soft clink.
Kai broke the silence. "Reports came in early."
Shinobu glanced up. "Night activity?"
"Yes," he said. "Village east of the river. Confirmed Lower Moon presence."
Mitsuri straightened instantly. "…Lower Moon?"
Kanae's smile faded—but didn't disappear. "Which one?"
"Six."
A pause.
Then Mitsuri inhaled slowly.
"…I'll go."
Kai met her eyes.
"You don't have to prove anything."
She smiled—confident, grounded, nothing like the girl she used to be.
"I know," she said. "That's why I want to."
Shinobu studied her for a long moment, then nodded. "I'll prep antitoxin. Just in case."
Kanae reached out and squeezed Mitsuri's hand. "Come back safely."
Mitsuri squeezed back. "I will."
Kai stood. "I'll be nearby. But this is yours."
She grinned. "Good."

Night — The Demon Reveals Itself
The village was quiet in the way that meant too quiet.
No insects.
No dogs.
No wind.
Mitsuri moved lightly across rooftops, ribbon-like Nichirin sword coiled at her side. Her breathing was steady, heart calm.
Strong, she thought. I'm strong.
The demon appeared without warning—dropping from a tree with a wet, distorted grin.
Lower Moon Six.
Multiple eyes. Twisted limbs. A body reinforced with hardened flesh like armor.
"So you're the one they sent," it hissed. "You smell… happy."
Mitsuri tilted her head. "That's a strange thing to notice."
It lunged.

The Fight
Fast.
Violent.
The demon's blows cratered the ground, claws scraping sparks from stone. Mitsuri bent and twisted, her sword flowing in impossible arcs—Love Breathing turning momentum into grace.
Her blade bit deep.
The demon howled—but didn't fall.
"Too shallow!" it snarled. "Your strength is wasted on softness!"
Mitsuri slid back, sandals skidding.
She inhaled.
No, she corrected calmly. My strength is built on it.
She stepped forward again—this time faster.
Her sword snapped outward, flexible steel wrapping around the demon's arm before it could react.
Love Breathing, Fifth Form.
The demon screamed as its limb tore free.
It retaliated with a Blood Demon Art—shockwaves rippling through the air, splitting walls and sending debris flying.
Mitsuri was thrown back—hard.
She rolled once. Twice.
Then stood.
Unhurt.
Her smile was gone now.
"I don't like when you hurt people," she said quietly. "Or villages."
The demon snarled, desperate now.
Mitsuri moved.
This time—
There was no hesitation.
Her blade danced—precise, overwhelming, beautiful.
Love Breathing, Sixth Form.
The neck came apart cleanly.
The demon disintegrated screaming.
Silence fell.

Aftermath
Kai stepped from the shadows only after the body was ash.
Mitsuri was breathing hard—but steady.
"…Did I do okay?" she asked, almost shy.
Kai smiled.
"You dominated a Lower Moon," he said. "You did more than okay."
She laughed, relief bursting out of her. "I was so nervous at first!"
He placed a hand on her head, gentle. "You trusted yourself."
She leaned into it for just a second.
"…I did."

Return to the Estate
By dawn, they were back.
Shinobu examined Mitsuri briskly. "No poison exposure. Minor bruising. You're irritatingly healthy."
Mitsuri beamed. "Yay!"
Kanae hugged her without warning. "I knew you'd win."
Later, as the sun rose and patients stirred again, Mitsuri sat beside Kai on the veranda.
"…I didn't feel scared," she said softly. "Not like before."
Kai looked at the horizon.
"That's growth," he replied. "Not the absence of fear—but knowing it won't stop you."
She nodded.
"…I want to protect this place," she added. "All of it."
He smiled.
"So do I."
The Butterfly Estate woke fully.
And somewhere deep in the dark—
A vacant seat among the Lower Moons went cold.
