Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 | No Margin for Error

2012 · Los Angeles · Training Facility

The gym didn't wait for anyone.

When Gu Kai arrived, warm-ups were already underway. Balls bounced in rhythm. Shoes squeaked sharply against the floor.

No one looked up.

That, more than anything, told him what had changed.

Yesterday, people watched him.

Today, they expected him.

---

The coach clapped once.

"Same groups," he said.

"Short clock."

No explanation.

The ball went up.

---

The first possession came fast.

Gu Kai brought the ball up, eyes scanning. The defense didn't rush him—but it didn't give him space either.

Eight seconds left.

He drove.

Two defenders shaded early.

Gu Kai stopped, pivoted, and swung the ball to the wing. Immediate cut.

The return pass came a beat late.

He adjusted mid-step and finished off balance.

In.

No celebration.

They ran back.

---

Next possession.

Seven seconds.

The defense switched everything.

Gu Kai didn't fight it.

He backed out, pointed, and dragged the bigger defender into a handoff. The mismatch lasted half a second.

That was enough.

He turned the corner, absorbed contact, and kicked to the top.

Hit.

Someone on the bench nodded.

---

The run tightened.

Every possession felt compressed—less time, less space.

A teammate missed a rotation. Layup given up.

The coach's whistle cut through the noise.

"Next."

No anger.

No lecture.

Just replacement.

Gu Kai watched the player walk off.

That's the line, he thought.

---

Midway through the run, Gu Kai made his first mistake of the day.

A skip pass he'd thrown a hundred times before.

This one floated.

A hand tipped it.

Turnover.

The defense scored.

No one reacted.

But Gu Kai felt it.

The cost landed immediately.

---

Next possession, he slowed everything down.

Not the pace—the choice.

He brought the ball up, waited for the screen to set, and used it tightly. The help stepped up.

Gu Kai didn't try to split it.

He pulled the help one step farther and dropped the ball to the short roll.

Finish.

No risk.

No margin wasted.

---

The final possession of the run came with the score tied.

Six seconds.

The ball found Gu Kai.

The defender stayed square, arms wide.

Gu Kai didn't force the drive.

He jabbed, shifted, and took one dribble left—just enough to create separation.

He rose into a short pull-up.

Clean.

The whistle blew.

---

The coach walked onto the court.

"That's the difference," he said calmly.

"Same skill. Different cost."

He looked at Gu Kai.

"You get one mistake," he continued.

"After that, you pay for it."

Gu Kai nodded.

"I know."

---

The system interface appeared—brief, precise.

Gu Kai sat down, breathing steady.

This wasn't pressure anymore.

It was clarity.

There was no room to experiment.

No space to chase highlights.

Just execution.

He looked at the court one more time.

This wasn't where you proved how good you were.

This was where you proved

you wouldn't cost anyone their trust.

And in this place—

That mattered more than anything else.
