Chapter 10 - CHAPTER TEN: CROWN OF ASHES

The smoke curled slow from broken planks, victory clear though the cost showed in heaps of fallen. A carriage crept ahead, its gold finish too bright against ash, pulled by horses made of nothing solid. Out stepped a man built for thrones, height sharp against the ruin, black eyes catching light like stone, teeth turned trophy upon his head. Figures cloaked in power stood near, marks on their skin glowing faint pulses, while Elara moved behind, one leg dragging, her stare stuck hard on Ava.

‎"Enough," the king intoned, voice amplified by sorcery, halting the fray. Rain hissed on hot metal. "Daughter. Yield the farce. You were forged in my labs - vampire essence, lycan fury, bound to serve."

Into the silence came Ava, holding papers high like proof. Wolves bared teeth. Vampires snapped air between sharp breaths. Fists stayed tight on both sides. Beside her, Liam stood close - fingers locked with hers, steady pulse in their grip. Not soft. Not breaking. The link between them hummed where words failed. Tension held its ground.

Fury lit her gaze - Ava tossed the documents hard. Pages flew apart, catching breaths midair. Some fell into waiting hands. Others whispered down between boots. Her voice cracked open the silence: Not love on your part. Testing. Killing. When they asked for calm, you answered with blood.

‎King's laugh chilled. "Peace? Weakness. Project Bridge was evolution - you, the pinnacle. Elara reported your every move. Even your wolf pet was mine - his bloodline, diluted royalty, key to control."

Liam bared his teeth, moving forward like a shield. "Not your toy anymore."

‎Elara sneered. "He was easy. Loyalty's a leash."

Still ringing, that betrayal. Yet Liam held Ava's hand tighter - his promise louder than pain. Not them. Her. That choice stood firm

His eyes turned sharp. "So share her fate," he said. A motion came - then spellcasters struck, bright forks splitting the sky like shattered glass.

‎The Reckoning

Fire lit under the Alliance. Into the fray went Renn's pack, tearing into sentries while Silas's fangs ripped apart warhorses. From shadow to spark, Ava and Liam drove hard at the heart of it, dodging spears, ripping spellcasters open with jagged swipes.

Out of nowhere Elara blocked Liam's path, blades laced with poison. "I made you," she spat, eyes blazing. Steel met steel fast - not a dance but a storm. His strength slammed against her quick strikes. A shallow cut on his forearm sent pain sparking through nerves. He bellowed, crashing into her like a falling tree. Punches landed hard until she melted into smoke, reappearing just behind him. But he was ready - swung back, bone cracking under impact. Her head snapped sideways. Quiet then, broken by breaths. One last move sliced the air. She dropped, still as stone.

Ava stood still as King stepped forward, a shimmering rune-blade alive in his grip. The air buzzed faintly between them. He spoke low, voice steady - "Approach. It is time to finish what began." Silence followed, heavy and close

Out of nowhere came the change - coat like midnight, teeth dripping poison, motion gone to ghost-speed. Crash followed crash - the ring of steel on claw, magic slamming into beast fury. Old strength moved him, each hit cracking rock; her answer flowed without pause, leaps quicker than shadows, returns harder than wolf strikes. "All that your family wanted!" Her cut split skin near his eye; back swung his edge, carving her arm, metal burning bright with silver fire.

Liam showed up, hurt yet wild-eyed, hitting the king from the side. A shout - "I'm here too" - ripped through the clash. Three figures tangled now, magic hurling Liam backward, Ava slashing at spell currents. Their rhythm clicked: he pulled attention, she found openings. Fire between them turned sharp - a growl of his gave her motion, a look from her anchored his stance.

Stumbling back, the king's voice cracked. His crown tilted sideways. "This will ruin everything," he said, hands shaking

Ava said no, climbing up fast. Her claws held down the arms. Near the throat, her teeth waited. You bring trouble on your own head, she meant.

‎Revelation final: king whispered, "Bridge… was always you. Unite or destroy."

His fingers rested against her spine. Together, they moved forward

Teeth sank - no death, just ownership. Poison surged through the monarch, spasms cracking ancient symbols apart. Those once chained broke loose, causing armies to stumble in disbelief.

Down he fell, crown gone. The alliance shouted loud in victory. Rain kept falling, but their joy was louder.

She sank against him, the change fading. His hold caught her weight. The moment passed. Quiet settled between them. What had been needed was done

Her lips met his, a promise carved into time. "Start," he whispered

Footsteps echoed where silence once held sway - stone laid, quiet mended through fire. Not borrowed. Held.
