Chapter 15 - She's Just A Human... So Why?

Odesse and Valex were walking side by side outside the palace, accompanied by a few guards behind them. Odesse wasn't dressed in her maiden gown; instead, she wore a different outfit that hinted at her royal status. Valex glanced down at her as she admired the colorful flowers lining the path to the town gate.

"Why do you look so focused on the flowers?" Valex asked. "Haven't you seen them before?"

Odesse appeared surprised and looked up at him. "Well, I did notice them the first time I left the palace, but I'm captivated by them. In Silverclaw Palace, there are no flowers with vibrant colors; they're all dead and wilted, so I find these fascinating."

As they walked, Odesse gazed at the flowers, and Valex smirked. He approached one, plucked it from the ground, and returned to Odesse, placing it in her hair. Stunned, she exclaimed, "Huh? What's this?" She gently took it out and admired it. "Wow, it's beautiful! What kind of flower is it?"

Valex smiled and replied, "This is a gladiolus flower."

"It's very pretty," Odesse said, smiling back at him.

When they reached the town gate, it swung open, revealing a lively festival happening outside. Odesse's face lit up with excitement. "Wow, what's going on?"

As they stepped through the gate, two women approached them, each holding flowers. They adorned Odesse and Valex with floral leis, smiling brightly as they walked away.

Odesse turned to Valex. "Master Valex, what is happening?" "I wanted to give you a warm welcome to Moonlight Palace, Odesse," he said, smiling at her.

In her mind, Odesse thought, *What is going on? Why does Master Valex's smile strike me with such warmth, like rainbows amidst clouds?* Confused yet happy, she felt both emotions intertwined.

Valex extended his hand to her, saying, "Let's go, Odesse." She looked at him warmly, smiled, and took his hand.

As they walked together, some people glanced at them; some gossiped, some admired, and some cursed. But Odesse's eyes were solely on Valex, who was leading her.

"So, what do you want to do first?" Valex asked.

Odesse looked around and spotted food stalls, clothing stalls, jewelry stalls, and entertainers. Pointing, she said excitedly, "I want to go over there!"

"Okay," Valex replied, and they approached the stall, and Odesse immediately recognized the merchant who once accused her of theft. Odesse smiled cheekily and said, "Hello, sir! It's nice to see you again."

The man's eyes widened at seeing Valex and Odesse together. "Hello there, your Highness Valex," he said with a smile.

Odesse looked at him and prompted, "Um… don't you remember?"

The man laughed nervously. "Your Highness, what would you and her lady like?"

Odesse scrunched her face slightly, and Valex noticed. He looked at the man and said, "Since you are ignoring what the lady asked, we shall take everything you sell without pay as punishment."

The man started to beg, "No, your Highness, please!"

Odesse was shocked by Valex's words; she felt a mix of emotions, unsure of what to say. Valex leaned down slightly and whispered in her ear, "No man should ever make you look that way except me." Odesse felt her heartbeat quicken, and her face turned red.

Standing upright, Valex commanded his guards to collect all of the man's goods. Odesse watched as the man begged and pleaded for mercy. Feeling a shift within her, she grabbed Valex's hand and said, "It's okay, Master Valex. We don't have to punish him to this extent for something so trivial."

Valex looked at Odesse, tilted his head, and smiled in a way that conveyed both hunger and composure. "That's enough," he said to his guards. "Leave his things, but we will not take anything from him. Let's go."

As Valex walked away, Odesse followed and so did the guards, glancing back at the regretful man. She then turned her focus forward and smiled.

In the Silverclaw pack, Malrik sat in his study, the dim light casting shadows on the walls as he held the book Elder Elias had given him. The cover depicted a lady, ethereal and enchanting. He opened it, and as his eyes skimmed the first line, he whispered the words in awe: "To my descendant of pale skin, silver hair, striking eyes, I shall protect you." Dumbstruck, he muttered, "What sort of fairytale is this? Is the Elder joking with me?"

Just then, a knock echoed through the room. "Come in," he said, dropping the book onto the table, his hands instinctively retreating to his pockets as he stood up. "Yes? Any information?"

The messenger stepped forward, "Sir, he's holding a party."

Malrik's eyebrows furrowed in surprise, "A party? Why?"

"They're having a welcome party for the human girl."

As he turned toward the window, a sense of unease washed over him. "Valex knows his reputation will suffer if the word gets out," he mused quietly, a malicious smile creeping across his lips. He turned to the messenger, "I need you to do something for me."

Meanwhile, in the Moonlight pack, Odesse sat in a reserved spot designed for her and Valex, eager to watch the dance performance unfold. She savored a dish rich with meat and cheese, her cheeks full as she glanced up at him. Valex caught her gaze and, as she chewed slowly and swallowed nervously, she wiped her mouth, an unexpected smile gracing her lips.

He raised his hand, and she tensed, her heart racing as he gently cleaned a food stain from her cheek with his handkerchief. A blush colored her face, and he asked, "Do you like the show?"

"Um, I'm looking forward to some people dancing in a very wild but interesting way," she stammered, "Yes, yes, I am! Thank you so much, Master Valex." Her smile radiated warmth, and for a moment, the world around them faded.

Valex's heart skipped a beat, his mind momentarily adrift. Why did her smile steal his breath away? It felt like a warm embrace, unspoken and intoxicating. He shook his head, reminding himself, She's just a servant... a human. Why am I treating her like a queen? Why do I feel this way? The questions swirled within him as he glanced at the dancers, his composure wavering.

Before he knew it, Odesse rose from her seat and joined the performers, her spirit shining as she danced with grace, laughter spilling from her lips. In Valex's vision, time seemed to slow. No longer was she just a human servant; she had transformed into a mesmerizing woman, captivating him entirely, though she remained blissfully unaware of the effect she had on him.

In that moment, he felt something awaken within him, a yearning he had tried hiding. As she twirled and laughed, a sense of destiny unfolded before his eyes. Who was she, and what magic had she cast upon his heart?
