Cherreads

Chapter 76 - Thornhaven’s Festival

The match is already over, but you wouldn't know it from the noise. The crowd's still on their feet, cheering like the last hit just landed.

Then the announcer cuts through the noise.

[Announcer] "Would all contestants please come to the arena floor!"

The eight fighters make their way down. Aurelia, Garrin, Silvara, Krath, Zephyra, Reef, Marcus, and Elena. They line up facing the stands.

Queen Vorath appears on a raised platform overlooking the arena, her presence commanding immediate silence.

[Queen Vorath] "Citizens of Thornhaven. Honored guests. We have witnessed something extraordinary today."

Her voice carries across the coliseum without magical amplification.

[Queen Vorath] "Eight fighters entered this tournament. Each one demonstrated skill, courage, and determination. Each one pushed themselves to their limits and beyond."

She gestures to the contestants.

[Queen Vorath] "But more than individual achievement, we have witnessed the spirit of Rathen itself. The drive to improve. The courage to face challenges. The respect shown between competitors even in the heat of battle."

The crowd listens in complete silence.

[Queen Vorath] "To our champion, Aurelia. You have shown us that strength comes not just from power, but from how we choose to use it. Your victory is well-earned."

Aurelia bows.

[Queen Vorath] "To all our contestants. You have our gratitude and our respect. Continue to grow stronger. Continue to challenge yourselves. Continue to embody the best of what we can be."

She pauses, then her expression shifts to something warmer.

[Queen Vorath] "And now, I invite everyone to enjoy the celebration festival that begins tonight in the city! Let us celebrate not just victory, but the bonds we have forged and the strength we share!"

The crowd erupts into cheers.

The contestants bow to the crowd, then to each other, then exit the arena floor to thunderous applause.

[Wright] "A celebration festival sounds good."

[Yuki] "Yes! I want to see what kind of food they have!"

[Takeshi] "And games. Festivals always have games."

[Aiko] "This is going to be so much fun!"

---

We make our way toward the exit, joining the flow of excited people heading into the city for the festival.

The streets are already filling up. Lanterns hang from buildings and posts, casting warm light across everything. Music drifts from somewhere ahead, along with the smell of grilled food and sweet pastries.

[Mira] "Takeshi!"

I turn to see familiar faces I recognize from the student tournament. Mira is waving from across the crowd, making her way toward us. She's with Sera, the merfolk who Takeshi faced in the 2nd round and Rhen, the winner of the student tournament. There's also Thora, a dwarf girl with twin axes strapped to her back, and Darian, a human mage I recognize from the first round of the student tournament.

Takeshi, Aiko, and Yuki break off from our group to meet them.

[Takeshi] "Mira! Everyone! What are you all doing here?"

[Sera] "We came for the tournament and the festival. I've been looking forward to both."

The dwarf girl grins, hooking a thumb toward the migrating crowd.

[Thora] "No one's going to classes today. The whole academy's here. Big fights, festival food, you really think anyone's staying in a lecture hall?"

The human mage exhales through his nose, folding his arms.

[Darian] "Would've been more fun if I hadn't gotten knocked out in the first round yesterday."

Takeshi gestures to our group.

[Takeshi] "Everyone, this is Wright, Eldrin, Liora, Vesper, Seraphina, and Lucien."

Mira's eyes widen as she looks at Seraphina and Lucien.

[Mira] "Wait. You're from Grivers, aren't you? The legendary adventuring group?"

Sera steps closer.

[Sera] "I've read about you in the academy archives. You cleared the Sunken Catacombs and sealed the Rift of Madness."

[Thora] "And you fought the Ancient Behemoth of the Northern Wastes! That's insane!"

[Darian] "I have books about your exploits. You're heroes!"

Seraphina laughs.

[Seraphina] "How delightful! It's always wonderful to meet young people who appreciate our accomplishments."

Lucien nods.

[Lucien] "You all performed well in the student tournament. Continue your training and you'll go far."

[Seraphina] "Indeed! Though perhaps with a touch more elegance. Combat should be an art form, not just a brawl."

[Lucien] "Says the person who threw a wine bottle at a hydra once."

[Seraphina] "It was a diversionary tactic! And it worked!"

Rhen's attention shifts to Eldrin. His eyes widen.

[Rhen] "You're Eldrin. The Skyblade."

Eldrin smiles.

[Eldrin] "I am."

[Rhen] "You've been my role model growing up. All the stories about you, your mastery of wind magic and sword techniques. I've been trying to follow in your footsteps."

[Eldrin] "I watched your match yesterday. You're already plenty strong. Your technique is solid and your tactical awareness is excellent. Continue the good work, and you'll surpass me in no time."

Rhen looks like he might pass out from the compliment.

[Wright] "Did you all see the tournament today?"

[Mira] "Yes! It was incredible!"

[Sera] "Aurelia's healing magic usage was revolutionary. I've never seen anything like it."

[Mira] "That golden light swirling around her was so amazing! I want to do something similar with my shadow magic. Having dark light swirling around would look so cool."

Rhen sighs.

[Rhen] "You're always focusing on aesthetics instead of combat effectiveness."

[Mira] "Looking cool trumps everything else."

[Sera] "You need to train more instead of worrying about how you look."

[Thora] "I disagree. You have to look cool. That's why I use two axes instead of one, just like how Garrin uses two hammers. It's about presence!"

[Darian] "Looking cool without power is useless though."

[Mira] "I don't want to hear that from someone who lost in the first round."

Darian winces.

[Sera] "He got put in a bad matchup. The demon defensive specialist was strong and way older. It wasn't a fair fight."

[Rhen] "I would have had trouble against that opponent too. Sometimes the bracket just doesn't favor you."

Mira turns to Aiko.

[Mira] "Are you going to learn to use healing magic like Aurelia? You have healing magic too, right?"

[Aiko] "I do, but I won't fight like that. It looks too dangerous. I'm more than okay staying in the backline and supporting everyone."

[Yuki] "I want to transform like Mira! A magical girl transformation!"

Mira's face shifts.

[Mira] "I do use magic, and I am a girl, but there's something about the words 'magical girl' I really don't like."

[Yuki] "But you transform and—"

[Mira] "I'd much rather be called that word Takeshi mentioned during my fight."

[Takeshi] "Chūnibyō?"

[Mira] "Yes! I'm a Chūnibyō!"

I smile.

[Wright] "You definitely fit that description perfectly."

Mira beams.

---

We continue walking toward the festival. The city's main square overflows with color and noise.

Stalls line every street, selling food, crafts, games, and various magical items. Colorful banners hang between buildings. Street performers juggle fire and create illusions. Musicians play on corners. The air is filled with laughter, conversation, and the constant hum of activity.

[Takeshi] "We're going to look around on our own if that's okay."

[Wright] "Have fun. Don't stay out too late."

[Aiko] "We won't!"

[Yuki] "Let's try all the food stalls!"

The three of them wave and disappear into the crowd with Mira's group.

A familiar presence materializes beside me. Sylphaeris appears, her glow just a touch softer than usual, a hint of fatigue in her eyes.

[Sylphaeris] "I missed the tournament! There was something I had to take care of and I couldn't get away."

Having a job sounds hard. I'm glad I'm retired.

[Wright] "Let's make up for it and enjoy the festival."

She brightens.

[Sylphaeris] "That sounds wonderful!"

We start walking through the stalls.

Vesper stops at one selling preservation magic artifacts. Small boxes, containers, and enchanted cloths are displayed with detailed descriptions of their functions.

[Vesper] "Oh, this is interesting! Look at this cooling preservation array. It's different from the one I designed for the refrigerators."

Seraphina peers over her shoulder.

[Seraphina] "And these wine preservation bottles! The enchantments maintain flavor and prevent oxidation indefinitely!"

[Vesper] "I need to examine the runework on this one—"

Lucien gently steers them both away from the stall before they can start disassembling the merchandise.

[Lucien] "We can come back later. Let's not terrorize the merchants."

[Seraphina] "I wasn't going to terrorize anyone!"

[Lucien] "You tried to take apart a display model last time."

[Seraphina] "That was for research!"

We continue walking, and Sylphaeris leads us toward the food stalls.

The variety is incredible. Grilled meats on skewers, fried dough covered in various toppings, candied fruits on sticks, steamed buns filled with savory fillings, sweet pastries drizzled with honey, roasted nuts glazed with spices.

Sylphaeris tries a bit of everything. Skewers of seasoned meat, fried dough balls with cinnamon sugar, candied Sunfall Fruit with a crystallized coating, and some kind of stuffed pastry with cheese and herbs.

[Sylphaeris] "Everything tastes so good!"

[Liora] "Festival food is always the best. Something about the atmosphere makes it better."

We eat as we walk.

Eldrin stops at a stall with various game setups.

[Eldrin] "Shall we try some of these?"

The first game has a large shallow pool filled with crystal-clear water. Swimming around inside are dozens of small creatures called Glimmerfins. They have translucent bodies that shimmer with soft blue and purple light. Tiny fins flutter as they dart around.

[Stall Operator] "Glimmerfin scooping! Use the paper scoop to catch one before it tears! Three attempts for a silver coin! Snag one and it's yours in plush form!"

The operator hands Eldrin a thin paper scoop attached to a wooden handle. It looks incredibly fragile.

Eldrin lowers the scoop into the water carefully. A Glimmerfin swims close, and he tries to scoop it up. The paper tears as the creature wriggles. The Glimmerfin escapes.

[Eldrin] "Ah. The paper is weaker than I expected."

He tries twice more, getting closer each time but never quite managing to catch one before the paper gives out.

Liora goes next. She has a gentle touch, moving the scoop slowly through the water. On her second attempt, she manages to lift a Glimmerfin out of the pool before the paper tears.

[Liora] "I got one!"

The operator gives her a small Glimmerfin plush, its body pulsing with a gentle light.

[Liora] "It's so pretty. I'll keep it in my house."

Vesper tries next. She studies the water tension and paper strength before making her move. Her scoop technique is precise and calculated. She catches a Glimmerfin on her first try.

[Vesper] "It's all about understanding the paper's structural integrity and minimizing water resistance."

The next stall has a ring toss game, but the posts keep teleporting to different locations every few seconds.

[Stall Operator] "Land a ring on a post and win! But careful, they like to move!"

Seraphina tries it and misses all three rings as the posts teleport away at the last second.

[Seraphina] "That's absolutely unfair!"

[Lucien] "It's a game of chance, not skill."

[Seraphina] "Then what's the point?"

Lucien tries anyway and manages to land one ring by throwing it the moment a post appears in a closer position.

He wins a small stuffed toy that looks like a miniature dragon.

[Lucien] "For Seraphina, since she couldn't win one herself."

[Seraphina] "How thoughtful. I shall treasure this mockery."

We move to another game stall. This one has a large transparent maze setup with multiple levels and pathways. Inside are dozens of small creatures with fuzzy bodies and six legs. They're called Skitterlings.

[Stall Operator] "Monster racing! Pick your Skitterling and watch it race through the maze! First one to reach the finish wins! Two silvers to enter!"

Several people are already crowded around, picking their racers. The Skitterlings come in different colors.

Eldrin picks a blue one. Liora chooses green. Vesper selects purple. Seraphina picks red. Lucien takes yellow. I pick orange, and Sylphaeris chooses a pink one.

The operator places all the Skitterlings at the starting line inside the maze. A magical barrier holds them in place.

[Stall Operator] "Ready? Go!"

The barrier drops and the Skitterlings take off, their six legs moving incredibly fast.

Seraphina's red Skitterling takes the lead, scurrying through the first section of the maze.

[Seraphina] "Yes! Go, my champion!"

But at the first intersection, the red Skitterling stops to sniff the air, confused about which way to go.

Eldrin's blue one overtakes it, moving through the correct path.

Lucien's yellow Skitterling tries to climb the maze walls instead of following the path.

[Lucien] "That's not how you're supposed to race."

Vesper's purple Skitterling moves methodically, checking each turn before proceeding. Slow but steady.

My orange one is doing well, staying close behind Eldrin's blue one. Liora's green Skitterling is in third place.

Sylphaeris's pink one stops to groom itself.

[Sylphaeris] "Why did it stop?!"

[Liora] "I think it's cleaning its fur."

The race continues through the multilevel maze. The Skitterlings jump up ramps, squeeze through narrow passages, and navigate bridges.

Eldrin's blue Skitterling maintains the lead most of the way, but near the end, my orange one finds a shortcut through a side passage and shoots ahead.

It crosses the finish line first.

[Stall Operator] "Orange wins!"

The operator hands me a small trophy carved to look like a Skitterling.

[Wright] "I'll treasure this."

Sylphaeris's pink Skitterling finally stops grooming itself and wanders through the maze, reaching the finish line last.

[Sylphaeris] "At least it finished."

There's a fortune telling booth nearby with mystical symbols painted on the tent. A fortune teller waves us over, promising to reveal our futures.

[Seraphina] "Oh, we should definitely try this!"

[Lucien] "Fortune telling is rarely accurate."

[Seraphina] "Where's your sense of adventure?"

We continue exploring the festival, trying various games, eating more food, and enjoying the celebration. The night air is cool and pleasant.
