Sam smiled.
It seemed he would have to get serious.

But Sam had already prepared the follow-up.
While Eevee was still affected, Clefairy had begun waving its finger—
Metronome.
The mysterious energy gathered—
And turned into Flamethrower!
A roaring pillar of fire surged forward and engulfed Eevee.
"Eevee!!"
Burned by the intense flames, Eevee cried out and rolled across the icy ground, using the frozen surface to extinguish the fire.
Its beautiful fur was scorched black in several places.
It looked absolutely miserable.
"Are you okay, Eevee?" Gary asked urgently.
"Vee!"
Eevee struggled to its feet, glaring fiercely at Clefairy.
Burning its precious fur was unforgivable.
Anger surged within it.
Under the brilliant moonlight, its body began to glow.
It was evolving.
"Finally…" Gary's eyes lit up.
This battle had always been about helping Eevee evolve. The objective had been achieved.
But winning would make it perfect.
The white glow intensified—
And when it faded, Umbreon stood proudly on the field.
The black fur absorbed the moonlight, while the golden rings on its body shimmered faintly.
"It's our turn too."
The moon was exceptionally bright tonight.
Sam took out the prepared Moon Stone.
As soon as the stone was held toward Clefairy, its energy flowed rapidly into the Pokémon until the stone crumbled away.
Bathed in moonlight, Clefairy felt warmth envelop its body.
It remembered dancing beneath the full moon at Mt. Moon, singing around the massive Moon Stone with its kin.
Smiling gently, it began to change.
Its body grew fuller and taller.
Its wings enlarged.
Its ears became longer and pointed, tipped in black.
Its curly tail grew larger, and the two small claws on its hands disappeared.
When the light faded—
Clefable stood there.
Sam couldn't hide his happiness.
"Gary, let's continue!"
Both Pokémon had evolved.
Now the real battle began.
"Umbreon, use Quick Attack!"
Though larger than before, Umbreon had not slowed down—in fact, it was faster.
With Quick Attack boosting it further, it became a streak of black lightning.
Sam could barely track its movement.
"Clefable, fly!"
Clefable quickly gathered moonlight into the wings on its back and lifted gracefully into the air.
Unlike Flying-types, it didn't flap its wings—it simply focused moonlight energy to levitate.
So close.
Umbreon narrowly missed as Clefable rose out of reach.
Gary clicked his tongue in frustration.
Seeing Clefable floating midair, he was slightly surprised. It was his first time battling one. He hadn't expected such an unusual method of flight.
No time to think.
"Umbreon, use Shadow Ball!"
Although Umbreon had learned Dark-type techniques after evolving, they were still unstable. Gary chose the reliable move it had mastered as an Eevee.
A dark sphere shot toward Clefable.
"Clefable, use Dazzling Gleam!"
Moonlight gathered around Clefable's body.
It became a radiant light source in the sky—
A brilliant flash exploded outward.
Gary's eyes widened.
"What move is that?!"
In the Kanto Region, the concept of the Fairy type had not yet been widely recognized. Most people still classified Clefairy and Clefable as Normal-type Pokémon.
It was only researchers like Professor Oak who had begun studying the Fairy type.
So Gary had no idea what Dazzling Gleam was.
But in battle—
