Chapter 8 - ## Chapter 7: Z Intervenes

The city never slept, but tonight the shadows were alive in a different way.

Rebecca didn't need to leave her office to know the pulse of Moscow. Every message, every whispered report, every coded signal ran through her mind like a second heartbeat.

**Z** was awake.

Her secure line buzzed. Operatives reporting small disturbances near Kai's apartment. Surveillance confirmed a man—well-dressed, cautious, but inexperienced in subtlety—was watching the building.

Rebecca's lips curved faintly. *So predictable.*

She picked up her phone, sending instructions with cold precision. Quiet observation, no interference. Let the boy be tested. Let him remain unaware.

Kai left class that day, his backpack slung carelessly over one shoulder. He didn't notice the car parked a block away. The man inside glanced down at his watch, fingers tightening around the steering wheel. A single movement too fast. A signal missed.

Rebecca watched all of it from her screen, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. He was safe—for now. But the experiment required tension. Real stakes. Danger sharpened memory, sharpened response.

When Kai returned to his apartment, he didn't notice the slight vibration in the hallway, the way the shadows lingered near the stairwell. He was thinking about Rebecca—about the way she moved, the way her long dark hair caught the afternoon light, the way those onyx eyes shone brown in the sunlight.

*Muffin,* he reminded himself silently again. The thought made him smirk. Not out loud. He would never say it.

Inside her office, Rebecca leaned back in her chair, tapping her fingers lightly against the polished wood. She was a predator in slow motion—careful, calculated, in control. Every operant of Z around him was a chess piece. Every subtle threat was a lesson. Every pause in observation a trigger.

"Good evening, Miss Zeigarnik," her secure line buzzed again, this time a brief video feed. A man in the shadows—older, composed, dangerous. Kai's father.

Rebecca's eyes darkened slightly. He had noticed. Perhaps even recognized.

But it didn't matter.

He wouldn't touch the boy. Not yet.

She knew what needed to happen. Kai had to continue unlocking pieces of the code on his own. Only he could give her the key. Only he could reach the memory that would open the safe.

Rebecca exhaled slowly, a predator savoring the hunt. She would retrieve what was hers—what her father had died for. The document, the truth, the justice.

And Kai…

Kai was not just a key. He was a test. A temptation. A variable she had not accounted for fully. But she would control it. Always.

She leaned forward, fingers hovering over the keyboard. Another instruction sent. Another shadow watching the boy, invisible.

Z had intervened. And yet, the experiment was far from over.

Rebecca Zeigarnik never acted without purpose.

And tonight, the city whispered her name like a warning.
