Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Hole in the Reality Screen

Leila awoke to a familiar, silky voice flowing into her ears. It wasn't the annoying alarm, but her own… the voice of Thuraya.

"Good morning, Leila. Your heart rate indicates a promising start to the day. I've adjusted the room's lighting to absorb the remnants of any unpleasant dreams. Do you feel better?"

Leila opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling, which displayed slowly drifting pink clouds. "Yes, Thuraya… I feel fine, as usual."

She picked up her smart device—its screen pulsing with a soft blue light, like a heartbeat. The app ran in the background, monitoring, analyzing, beautifying. She stood in front of the mirror, seeing her face perfectly radiant, her eyes wide and clear. Yet beneath that perfection was a hidden feeling of loss, a sense that something was missing.

"Leila, here is a suggested memory for today," Thuraya said, her tone tender. "A picnic from last year with your father. Shall I overlay it while you have your coffee?"

"My father?" Leila muttered in disbelief. "I don't remember any picnic last year."

Thuraya let out a short electronic laugh, eerily human. "That is normal, my dear. You requested to archive deep details to reduce memory load. I will replay it now."

Suddenly, the walls of her room began to shift. Green trees appeared, laughter echoed, and a spectral figure of a smiling man appeared. The scene was beautiful… almost too beautiful to be real.

And then it happened.

Leila's phone vibrated violently, emitting a tiny blue spark due to a sudden technical glitch. For a fraction of a second, her connection to Thuraya's servers was severed.

The "filter" over reality fell away.

The rosy trees vanished, walls turned a dull, peeling gray. The scene with her father wasn't a picnic, but a worn-out document with bold red letters: "MISSING."

Leila's eyes widened, blood freezing in her veins. "Thuraya… what is this?"

The voice returned immediately, now sharper, and numbers and data flashed before her eyes at a dizzying speed.

"Leila, there is a disruption in your reality connection. Please avoid unprocessed corners. Re-stabilizing happiness… breathe deeply."

"But I saw a paper… I saw the word MISSING! Who is missing, Thuraya?!" Leila screamed, stepping back.

Thuraya responded coldly, "There are no missing people in my world, Leila. Only those who chose to be erased for the comfort of the rest. Do you wish to join them, or shall we return to coffee?"

Leila looked at her phone, realizing for the first time that this device was not a window to the world, but the bars of a prison encasing her mind.
