Lingyuan City — Old District, Mei's Tranquil Teas (Flagship) — May 18, 2026 — 3:47 p.m.
The fog had lifted just enough to let weak afternoon sunlight filter through the streets of the Old District, turning the charcoal-gray facade of Mei's Tranquil Teas into something almost regal. Twenty-eight branches now bore the same sign, but this one, the flagship remained the heart. A small queue still lingered outside even in the mid-afternoon lull; customers clutching pouches of Crimson Dawn and Jade Serenity, murmuring about how the tea "actually works" without emptying their pockets.
Lin Xue stopped at the corner of the street, Lin Xia's small hand tight in hers.
The little girl, eight years old, crimson eyes wide, stared up at the elegant building with its gold lettering and polished windows.
"Is this really Auntie Mei's shop?" she whispered.
Lin Xue swallowed hard. She hadn't visited in years. Back then it had been a single cramped storefront with peeling paint and half-empty shelves. Now…
"It's… bigger," she managed. "Much bigger."
Two tall men in dark uniforms stood at the entrance,Li Clan enforcers, though Lin Xue didn't know their affiliation. They straightened as mother and daughter approached, eyes scanning them briefly before one inclined his head.
"Welcome to Mei's Tranquil Teas, ma'am. Are you here to purchase?"
Lin Xue hesitated. "I… I'm looking for Lin Mei. My sister."
The guards exchanged a quick glance. The taller one nodded once.
"Empress Mei is not in at the moment. Please wait inside. We'll inform the manager."
Lin Xue's brow furrowed. Empress Mei?
They were ushered through the door without further question. Inside, the space took her breath away, high ceilings, gleaming wood counters, rows of neatly stacked pouches, soft golden lanterns, cushioned chairs filled with customers sipping tea that smelled divine. Behind the long counter, a young woman with quick hands and a bright smile ,Li Na ,looked up.
"Welcome! How can I—?" Her eyes widened slightly as she took in Lin Xue's face, then Lin Xia's matching crimson eyes. Recognition flickered. "You… you look like Empress Mei."
Lin Xue managed a tired smile. "I'm her elder sister. Lin Xue. This is my daughter, Lin Xia. Is Mei here?"
Li Na's expression softened instantly. "Empress Mei is at her home. Please, sit. I'll call Sir right away."
"Sir?" Lin Xue echoed faintly.
Li Na was already reaching for the internal communicator. "Sir, this is the front desk. There's a woman here claiming to be Empress Mei's elder sister. She has a daughter with her."
A brief pause.
Then a calm, deep voice crackled through: "I'm on my way. Prepare the private lounge. Make them comfortable."
Li Na hung up, beaming. "Sir will be here shortly. Please follow me."
She led them through a side door into a small, elegantly furnished private lounge, plush couches, a low table with fresh tea already brewing, soft lighting. Lin Xia stared at everything with wide-eyed wonder, clutching her mother's hand tighter.
Lin Xue sank onto the couch, exhaustion crashing over her now that they were finally inside. She pulled Lin Xia onto her lap, stroking the girl's hair.
"It's real," she whispered. "Your aunt really did it. Look at this place…"
Minutes later, the sound of a powerful engine purred outside, then cut off.
The door opened.
Zhao Ming stepped in, tall, lean, jet-black hair slightly tousled from the drive, tailored black robes open just enough at the chest to hint at the hard muscle beneath. His obsidian eyes, faint crimson glint when they caught the light, swept the room and locked on Lin Xue.
For a heartbeat, he froze.
Lin Xue rose slowly, Lin Xia still in her arms. The resemblance was unmistakable, same porcelain skin, same ink-black hair, same striking crimson eyes but where Lin Mei radiated gentle, maternal warmth, Lin Xue carried a sharper edge, a woman who had fought and bled for every scrap of dignity she still possessed.
Zhao Ming's gaze lingered, first on her face, then lower, taking in the weary grace of her figure, the quiet strength in her posture despite the exhaustion. A flicker of something hungry passed through his eyes mesmerized, possessive, already calculating.
Then his attention shifted to the little girl.
Lin Xia stared up at him crimson eyes huge, curious, unafraid.
Zhao Ming's expression softened, just a fraction.
He knelt slowly to her level, voice low and surprisingly gentle.
"Hello, little one. I'm Zhao Ming. Your cousin."
Lin Xia blinked. "You're Cousin Ming? Auntie Mei's son?"
He smiled thin, warm. "That's right. And you must be Lin Xia."
She nodded shyly.
Zhao Ming extended his hand. Lin Xia hesitated then placed her small hand in his. He gave it a gentle squeeze.
"You're safe here," he said simply. "No one will ever hurt you again."
Lin Xia's eyes shimmered. She looked at her mother.
Lin Xue's throat worked. Tears welled.
Zhao Ming rose, gaze returning to Lin Xue intense, searching.
"Come," he said quietly. "We'll talk in the car. It's more private."
He led them out a side exit to the waiting black sedan. The Li Clan driver opened the doors.
Inside, leather seats soft, partition up, Lin Xue finally broke.
She told him everything.
The drinking. The beatings. The nights Jian came home reeking of other women. The way he'd raised his hand to Lin Xia when she cried too loud. The bruise on her daughter's cheek that wouldn't fade.
She spoke in a low, trembling voice, tears spilling silently. Lin Xia curled against her side, listening without interruption.
Zhao Ming listened in utter silence.
His face remained calm, almost serene but his qi flared subtly, golden threads laced with dark lotus shadow pulsing in quiet fury. His knuckles whitened on the armrest.
When Lin Xue finished, voice cracking, "I just want her safe",he exhaled once, long and controlled.
Then he pulled out his phone.
A single text to Yue Lin:
Western Canal District. Jian residence. Bring him to the warehouse. Quietly. No witnesses. I want him alive when I arrive.
He pocketed the phone.
Lin Xue stared. "What… what did you just do?"
Zhao Ming met her gaze cold, certain.
"I'm removing a problem," he said simply. "Permanently."
Lin Xia looked up at him. "You're going to hurt the bad man?"
Zhao Ming's expression softened for her.
"I'm going to make sure he never hurts anyone again, little one."
The car pulled up to the gated penthouse.
Lin Xue stepped out then froze.
The building was sleek, modern, secure guards bowing as they approached.
"This… this is where Mei lives?" she whispered.
Zhao Ming guided them inside up polished steps, through double doors.
The elevator ride was silent. When the doors opened onto the penthouse, Lin Xue's breath caught.
Marble floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows. City lights glittering below.
And then the master bedroom doors stood open.
Lin Mei stepped out crimson qipao hugging her curves, long black hair loose, one hand resting on the gentle swell of her pregnant belly.
Lin Xue froze.
Lin Mei's eyes widened, then filled with tears.
"Sister…?"
Lin Xue's voice cracked. "Mei…"
Lin Mei rushed forward arms wrapping around Lin Xue, pulling her close. Lin Xia stared up at the beautiful woman who looked so much like her mother.
Lin Mei knelt slowly, tears streaming.
"Xia… oh gods, look at you. You're so big."
Lin Xia hesitated then threw her arms around Lin Mei's neck.
"Auntie Mei?"
Lin Mei laughed through sobs, hugging her tightly. "Yes, sweetheart. Auntie Mei. And this…" She placed Lin Xia's small hand on her belly. "This is your little cousin."
Lin Xia's eyes went huge. "A baby?"
Lin Mei nodded, smiling through tears. "Your cousin. And you're going to be the best big cousin in the world."
Zhao Ming watched from the doorway arms crossed, expression unreadable but eyes burning with possessive satisfaction.
Lin Xue looked at him over her sister's shoulder.
"You… you did all this?"
Zhao Ming inclined his head once.
"For my mother," he said quietly. "And now, for family."
Lin Xue's tears fell harder.
She stepped forward slowly, hesitantly and bowed her head.
"Thank you," she whispered. "For taking us in. For protecting us."
Zhao Ming reached out, gently lifting her chin.
"You're blood," he said simply. "And blood belongs to me now."
He looked at Lin Xia then back at Lin Xue.
"Rest. Eat. Tomorrow, we begin making sure no one ever threatens this family again."
Lin Xue nodded exhausted, relieved, safe for the first time in years.
Lin Mei took her sister's hand, leading her and Lin Xia deeper into the penthouse.
Zhao Ming watched them go then pulled out his phone.
A single new text to Yue Lin:
Bring him alive. I want to look into his eyes when I end him.
He pocketed the phone.
The Zhao Clan had just gained two more members.
And the man who had hurt them would soon learn what happened when you touched what belonged to him.
