Chapter 21 - Silent Breakthrough

The night deep within the Southern Quadrant was absolute. The artificial stars of the pocket realm twinkled with a cold, mechanical precision, casting a pale light over the dilapidated hut that housed the Lin Clan's greatest disappointment.

Inside, the air was still. The only sound was the rhythmic breathing of Lin Kai.

He lay on his straw mattress, his body curled slightly under the thin woolen blanket. His sleep was heavy, a black and dreamless void born from physical exhaustion and the emotional amputation he had suffered earlier that evening. His mind had shut down, seeking refuge from the memory of Master Feng's tear-stained face and the crushing verdict of the Clan Leader.

But while his consciousness slept, his body was screaming.

Deep within his veins, a silent revolution was taking place.

For many years, Lin Kai had been stuck at the 9th Stage of the Mortal Foundation Realm. He had hit a wall that no amount of push-ups or meditation could break. His "Grade Zero" blood was an inert sludge, refusing to interact with the Aether Qi of the world.

But today, something had changed.

The spark had been lit in the Hall of Potential. When he touched the Crystal Prism, the Dark Affinity—that ancient, devouring force dormant in his soul—had finally woken up to feed. And earlier in the forest, he had forced that Darkness to consume Qi to fuel his strikes.

Now, the floodgates had cracked open.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

His heart rate began to climb.

In the cultivation world, the Blood Awakening Realm (Rank 2) was the bridge between mortal flesh and a cultivator's body. It was not about absorbing Qi into the Dantian yet; it was about refining the blood itself. The blood had to become thicker, hotter, and more durable, turning into a vessel capable of withstanding the violent pressure of true Qi.

Usually, this process required expensive Blood-Forging Pills and weeks of guided meditation by an Elder.

Lin Kai had none of that. He had only the darkness and his own despair.

Inside his arteries, the blood began to boil. The impurities—the "mortal dust"—were being incinerated not by heat, but by a cold, corrosive pressure. The dark energy he had inhaled earlier was scrubbing his veins, expanding them, reinforcing the walls with invisible power.

Lin Kai groaned in his sleep, his brow furrowing as a sheen of sweat coated his skin. He didn't wake up. His exhaustion was too deep. He simply endured the transformation in the comatose state of deep REM sleep.

Crack.

A soft sound echoed inside his body, audible only to him. It sounded like a dry twig snapping.

The barrier shattered.

His blood rushed with a new vigor, heavier and more potent than before. The aura around his sleeping form shifted. He was no longer a Mortal.

Blood Awakening Realm - 1st Stage.

He had broken through. In his sleep. Without a pill. Without a teacher. The irony was that if the Elders knew, they would have coughed up blood in envy. To break through during sleep was a sign of a "Natural Dao State," a talent found in one in millions.

But the night was not done with him yet.

As his aura stabilized, a faint hum began to emanate from his chest.

Hanging around his neck, hidden beneath his sleepwear, was a pendant. It was a simple object made of a black, unidentifiable metal. It bore no gemstone, only a carving of a strange beast—a creature with the head of a fox and the scales of a dragon.

Lin Kai believed it was the only legacy left by his deceased parents. He had worn it since he was a baby, clutching it during thunderstorms, whispering his secrets to the cold metal.

Tonight, the metal was warm.

Hummmmm.

The vibration grew stronger, harmonizing with the new frequency of his awakened blood.

Slowly, terrifyingly, a mist began to seep from the pendant.

It wasn't grey or black. It was a vibrant, royal Violet.

The mist swirled like a living ribbon, defying gravity. It didn't dissipate into the room; it moved with purpose. It coiled around Lin Kai's neck, caressing his cheek with a ghostly tenderness that felt almost maternal. Then, sensing that he was safe in his slumber, the mist turned its attention elsewhere.

It floated across the bed toward the pillow where Xiao Bai lay.

The white fox was asleep, her three tails wrapped around her nose. But the moment the violet mist touched her fur, her ears twitched.

She opened her eyes.

They were gold. Alert. Predatory.

She saw the mist. A normal beast would have hissed or fled. This energy felt ancient, heavy, and dangerous. It felt like the pressure of a collapsing star.

But Xiao Bai didn't move. She didn't flinch.

She watched the violet ribbon drift closer, her golden eyes narrowing not in fear, but in recognition. It was as if she was greeting an old friend—or accepting a command.

The mist hovered before her snout, pulsating. Xiao Bai uncurled her body, sitting up on the mattress. She extended her neck and inhaled deeply.

Whoosh.

The violet mist surged into her nostrils.

It didn't hurt her. Instead, her small, white body began to glow with a faint purple luminescence. The energy coursed through her meridians, unlocking memories and power that had been sealed away for years.

The process lasted for more than a minute. The pendant continued to pour out the energy until the last wisp was sucked into the fox's lungs.

Then, silence returned.
