Chapter 22 - #Chapter 20 — The Calm Before Ash

(Mari POV)

The sun was low, the forest shadows stretching long and lean as if reaching for the horizon. A month had passed since the last clash—the ruins of Blackstone Ridge still fresh in my mind, the echoes of fire and smoke haunting every edge of the land. In that time, Asha and I had trained relentlessly. Day after day, from dawn to dusk, we honed our skills—our claws, our teeth, our speed, our senses, our minds.

The Moon Goddess's ritual still loomed ahead, a countdown that pressed against my chest like the weight of stone, but it was my constant companion. Every swing of the blade, every leap through the forest canopy, every meditation with my wolf beneath my skin brought me closer to that moment.

"Faster, Asha!" I barked, sprinting along the ridge with her close behind. Her boots skidded over the wet earth as she struggled to keep pace. "You're letting your focus slip. If you can't keep up, you'll be dead the moment the Vrenatta wolves find us!"

She snarled, eyes narrowing, wolf teeth glinting beneath her lips, but she pushed harder, matching my rhythm. "I'm not slowing, Mari!"

I grinned, teeth flashing in the sunlight. "Good. Then prove it. Remember, speed is nothing without control. Precision, instinct, dominance—that's what wins battles, not just raw strength."

Asha's wolf hummed beneath her skin, synchronized with mine, a subtle rhythm of loyalty, instinct, and trust. Unlike Luke's pack, where his Beta Soren was always a calm anchor, I didn't need an anchor. I was the Alpha-in-training. But Asha's presence was necessary—a mirror, a shield, a partner in perfect synchronicity.

We leapt from the cliff edge, landing in a crouch among the jagged stones below. My claws dug into the earth, my muscles coiling and releasing with every controlled movement. I could feel the forest, the land, the energy around me, flowing through my wolf, whispering, guiding, demanding attention. Soon, I would understand it fully. Soon, I would speak with it without hesitation.

Asha hit the ground beside me, panting, but still sharp, still ready. "Again," I said. "And this time, anticipate my move. Let your wolf guide you. Don't just follow me. Lead, then strike."

For hours, we moved like shadows of predators, through trees, across rivers, over fallen logs, honing our senses, our timing, our communication. Every attack, every parry, every dodge was a rehearsal for the chaos that would come. The thought of Luke's pack and the destruction they would bring only sharpened the edge beneath my ribs.

By midday, sweat dripped, and my muscles screamed, but I didn't relent. Not once. Not for a second. Not until the forest itself seemed to acknowledge my presence, the wind shifting, the trees bowing subtly, the earth humming beneath my feet. My wolf stirred, coiled tighter, whispering warnings, strategies, and guidance. Soon, it would speak clearly. Soon, it would be fully mine.

Then the pack link buzzed—a sharp, electric pulse through my mind that made the hair on my arms rise.

I tapped it, and a message bloomed in front of me, crystal clear, cold as ice.

Vrenatta Pack. Message from Alpha Ronan. The war will begin in days. Midnight seeks revenge for the loss of Blackstone Ridge. Prepare your defenses. Nightblade territory will be their target. They come for blood.

I froze, the words slicing through the haze of training, slicing through the forest air, slicing through my mind.

Asha stiffened beside me, her wolf alert, tense. "That's… soon."

I clenched my fists. Rage didn't rise yet—it simmered, coiled, waiting. But the awareness that Midnight would strike, that Luke's pack would come for revenge, lit a fire in me hotter than any training could replicate.

"They think they can catch us off guard," I said softly, voice cold, measured. "They think the Nightblade is weak. That we're distracted. That we can't fight back."

"They're wrong," Asha said. Her gaze was sharp, unwavering, filled with loyalty and defiance. "We've trained. We're ready."

I smiled faintly, darkly, feeling the wolf stir beneath my skin like molten silver. "We've trained for this. Not just to survive. Not just to fight. But to win. To crush anyone who dares enter our territory."

The forest around us seemed to lean in, listening. I could feel every branch, every leaf, every shadow vibrating with anticipation. The battle would not just be physical. It would be mental. Strategic. Ruthless. And I would be the Alpha at the center of it, commanding the pack, dominating the land, controlling my wolf in ways Luke could only dream of.

Asha stepped closer, lowering her voice. "Mari… you're… you're not afraid?"

I let out a small, humorless laugh. "Afraid? No. Angry? Yes. Focused? Always. Hatred sharp enough to cut through stone? Definitely."

She nodded, understanding. That was enough. My wolf coiled beneath my skin, restless, whispering, telling me that the time was near. That the moment for true power, for full awakening, for total dominance was approaching.

I tapped the pack link again. "Alert the others. Full readiness. Every scout, every Omega, every Beta. Every trap, every hidden path, every ambush—prepare. Midnight will come, and we will be ready."

Asha's eyes glimmered with pride, respect, and loyalty. "I'll help," she said simply. "Always."

I reached out, placing my hand lightly on her shoulder. Not a touch of affection—authority. Approval. Trust. "Then do it. And when the Moon comes… we'll be unstoppable. You and I, Asha. Together, the Nightblade will dominate anything that dares enter our lands."

She nodded, wolf humming in unison with mine, and we turned back to the forest. Training resumed, more intense than ever. Every strike, every leap, every controlled movement was a preparation for the war that would arrive in days.

I let the fury simmer, the anticipation sharpen, the wolf coil tighter. The Moon Goddess had yet to call, my bond had yet to awaken fully, but the fire inside me was already ready. Midnight would come. And when they did, they would meet Nightblade at its peak—ruthless, controlled, and utterly unstoppable.

And Mari Ventor? Luke Vrenatta would find out, in the blood and fire to come, why the Nightblade was not to be underestimated.

The forest seemed to lean closer, shadows lengthening, anticipating the clash that would shape the future. The war was coming. And we would be ready.
