Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Trial of the First System

The ground vanished beneath Aren.

Darkness swallowed him.

For a moment there was no up, no down—only falling through endless black silence. The chamber above disappeared like a dream closing its eyes.

Then—

Impact.

Aren landed hard on cold stone.

But the stone was wrong.

It moved.

He rolled instantly, instincts sharper than thought. The place he had landed cracked open, revealing something beneath the surface.

Eyes.

Dozens of them.

Creatures pulled themselves out of the stone floor—humanoid shapes made of fractured metal and pale light. Their bodies were incomplete, as if they were half-finished designs abandoned long ago.

Ancient constructs.

The voice returned.

Not from the air.

From everywhere.

First System Trial Initiated.

Objective: Survive.

The creatures moved.

Not fast.

Perfect.

One lunged.

Aren stepped inside its reach and struck its neck joint. The impact shattered the creature's head—but the body kept moving.

Aren narrowed his eyes.

"Not alive," he muttered.

Three more attacked.

Blades formed from their arms, slicing the air in precise arcs. Aren ducked, twisted, drove an elbow into a rib section. Metal cracked—but the creature only slowed.

They weren't trying to win.

They were measuring him.

Aren adapted instantly.

Instead of striking joints, he struck balance points—places where the creatures' bodies redistributed force.

One fell.

Then another.

Then five more emerged from the stone.

The chamber wasn't sending enemies.

It was increasing difficulty.

Aren exhaled slowly.

"Fine," he said.

Inside his chest, the quiet pressure he had learned in the pit condensed again. Not outward this time.

Inward.

His body aligned with the rhythm of the chamber.

For the first time, Aren understood something new.

The pressure wasn't force.

It was structure.

He stepped forward.

The next creature swung.

Aren moved once.

And the creature collapsed before touching him.

The floor cracked beneath its feet.

Not from strength.

From misalignment.

The system voice echoed again.

Adaptation detected.

Trial escalation.

The ground split open.

Something far larger began climbing out.

Aren lifted his head slowly.

"Good," he whispered.
