Chapter 31 - POOL THERAPY

Arav woke up feeling like death. Well, more death than usual for a vampire.

"Oh god," he groaned, pressing his face into the pillow. "What happened?"

"You got drunk on convergence blood," Kayen's amused voice came from beside him. "Then serenaded an entire bar with your 'Truth Song.' It was educational."

Arav's eyes flew open. Memories crashed back—standing on tables, screaming about love, something about vampire dolphins...

"No," he whispered in horror. "Please tell me I didn't—"

Kayen showed him his phone. The video had 50,000 views on supernatural social media.

"FIFTY THOUSAND?!" Arav shrieked, then immediately regretted it as his head pounded. "Oh my god. Oh my god. Kill me. Actually kill me."

"You're already dead," Kayen pointed out helpfully.

"Then kill me again!" Arav buried his face in the pillow. "I can never show my face in public ever again."

"It's not that bad—"

"I called you a BABY DUCK, Kayen!"

"That was actually the least embarrassing part," Kayen said, scrolling through his phone. "The comments are mostly positive. Look: 'Cutest vampire couple ever.' 'Convergence bloodline drunk is my new favorite thing.' 'The way he looks at his mate though 😭❤️'—"

"Stop," Arav begged. "Just... stop."

His phone buzzed. Text from Priya: *"BHAIYA! I saw the video! You're so happy! When can I meet Kayen properly?"*

At least his sister found it endearing rather than mortifying.

"I need to destroy that video," Arav declared. "Hack the supernatural internet. Erase all evidence."

"Or," Kayen suggested, "you could accept that you did something embarrassing but ultimately harmless, and move on."

"Absolutely not. I choose denial."

Kayen laughed, pulling Arav close despite his protests. "For what it's worth, drunk you was adorable. And the 'I love you'—I'll treasure that moment forever."

Arav's embarrassment softened. "I meant it. Even if I said it while 'vampired.'"

"I know," Kayen said. "I felt it. But Arav? When you're ready—sober, clear-headed—I'd love to hear it again."

"I love you," Arav said immediately, meeting his eyes. "There. Sober. Clear-headed. I love you, Kayen. Even when you show me humiliating videos."

Kayen kissed him—deep, claiming, full of a thousand years of longing finally fulfilled.

"I love you too," Kayen whispered against his lips. "My chaotic, convergence, dolphin-singing vampire."

"I will never live that down, will I?"

"Never."

---

Later that afternoon, Mae Siri called a meeting.

"The Vatican heist," she announced. "We need to start preparing. That means training. Real training. Infiltration skills, combat scenarios, teamwork exercises."

"And where do we train?" Jin asked. "We can't exactly practice breaking into churches at the local gym."

"I know a place," Preeda said. "My friend owns an estate outside Bangkok. Private, secure, with facilities. Including an Olympic-size pool."

"Why do we need a pool?" Arav asked.

"Because," Mae Siri said, "the Vatican has underground passages. Some of them flooded. You'll need to know how to swim in full gear, hold your breath for extended periods, and fight underwater if necessary."

"Vampires don't need to breathe," Kayen pointed out.

"But you do," Mae Siri said to Arav. "Your divine blood keeps you partially alive. You need air. Which means you're a liability in water."

"Great," Arav muttered. "Add it to the list of ways I'm a disaster."

"You're not a disaster," Kayen said firmly. "You're learning. We all are."

That evening, they arrived at Preeda's friend's estate. It was massive—sprawling gardens, a main house that looked like a palace, and yes, an enormous pool that glowed blue in the twilight.

"Indoor and outdoor facilities," Preeda explained. "Heated, Olympic length, diving platforms. Perfect for training."

They changed into swimming gear. Arav in simple black swim trunks, still self-conscious about his transformed body—more muscular now, but different, supernatural.

He walked out to the pool and stopped dead.

Kayen was already there.

Wet.

Having apparently already done some laps, water streaming down his body, swim trunks sitting low on his hips, his dark hair slicked back.

A thousand years of vampire perfection on full display.

"You're staring," Kayen said, amused.

"I'm admiring," Arav corrected, unable to look away. "There's a difference."

"Mmm," Kayen's eyes traveled down Arav's body with equal appreciation. "I could say the same. You've filled out since the transformation. Very... distracting."

The air between them charged with tension.

Jin cannon-balled into the pool, breaking the moment. "Stop eye-fucking each other and get in the water! We have training to do!"

Training started simple: laps, underwater swimming, breath control.

Arav struggled. His divine blood meant he needed to breathe, but not as often as humans. It was confusing—sometimes he could hold his breath for three minutes, sometimes barely one. His body couldn't decide what it needed.

"Stop thinking," Kayen said, swimming up beside him. "Your divine blood responds to stress. The more you panic, the more human you become. Calm equals vampire traits, panic equals human vulnerability."

"Easy for you to say," Arav panted, clinging to the pool edge. "You don't need to breathe at all."

"True," Kayen agreed. "But I can help you calm down." He moved closer, his hand finding Arav's waist underwater. "Breathe with me. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Feel the bond—let it anchor you."

Arav focused on their connection. Kayen's calm, steady presence flowing through. His breathing slowed, deepened, synchronized with Kayen's unnecessary but practiced rhythm.

"Better," Kayen murmured. "Now try again. I'll be right here."

They dove together. This time, Arav made it forty-five seconds before needing air. Then a minute. Then ninety seconds.

"You're doing it," Kayen said when they surfaced, pride clear in his voice and through the bond.

"We're doing it," Arav corrected. "I couldn't without you."

Kayen's expression softened. He glanced around—Jin and Preeda were practicing combat moves at the other end of the pool, Som was timing his underwater holds, Mae Siri was inside reviewing security plans.

No one watching them.

Kayen backed Arav against the pool wall, his arms on either side, caging him in.

"Kayen—" Arav started.

"Do you know," Kayen said quietly, his voice low and intimate, "how hard it is to train with you looking like that? Water dripping down your skin, breathing hard, your eyes doing that four-color swirl when you're concentrating?"

"Is this training?" Arav asked breathlessly.

"No," Kayen admitted. "This is me being extremely distracted by my bonded mate."

He leaned in, his lips brushing Arav's ear. "And you're not making it easier, looking at me like you want to—"

"Like I want to what?" Arav challenged, finding his courage.

Kayen's eyes darkened. "Like you want me to forget we're supposed to be training and just take you right here."

Arav's breath caught. Through the bond, desire flowed both ways—hot, desperate, barely contained.

"Maybe I do," Arav whispered.

Kayen made a sound—half groan, half growl. "You can't say things like that when there are people around."

"Then maybe," Arav said, emboldened by Kayen's obvious struggle, "we should continue this training session... privately?"

"Privately," Kayen repeated, his voice strained. "Yes. That's. That's a good idea."

"HEY!" Jin shouted from across the pool. "Are you two actually training or just making out against the wall? Because it looks like option two!"

They sprang apart, both looking guilty.

"Training!" Arav called back. "Definitely training!"

"Uh-huh," Jin said skeptically. "Sure looked like training. The kind that gets you arrested for public indecency."

Preeda laughed. "Let them be. They're bonded mates. This is probably torture—training together but not being able to actually be together."

"We can be professional," Kayen insisted.

"Can you though?" Som asked, swimming over. "Because the sexual tension is so thick I could swim through it."

Arav's face burned. Through the bond, he felt Kayen's equal embarrassment mixed with frustration.

*Later,* Kayen promised through their connection. *When everyone's asleep. The pool will be empty. Just us.*

*Promise?* Arav thought back.

*Promise,* Kayen confirmed.

Training continued, but now every touch was charged. Kayen adjusting Arav's diving form—hands lingering. Arav swimming past him underwater—bodies brushing. Both of them hyperaware of each other, counting down the minutes until they could be alone.

Finally, near midnight, Mae Siri called it.

"Enough for tonight. Good progress, Arav. Tomorrow we add combat scenarios—fighting while swimming. For now, rest. We leave for Rome in three days."

Everyone headed inside, exhausted.

Except Arav and Kayen.

They waited thirty minutes to be sure everyone was asleep. Then met back at the pool—now dark, lit only by underwater lights that cast everything in ethereal blue.

"Hi," Arav said, suddenly nervous.

"Hi," Kayen replied, moving through the water toward him.

No one was watching now. No training protocols. No interruptions.

Just them, the water, and the bond singing with desire.

"So," Arav said, backing up as Kayen advanced, "about that private training session—"

"I think," Kayen said, his voice dropped to that dangerous low tone, "we've done enough training for one day."

"Oh?" Arav's back hit the pool wall. "What do you suggest instead?"

Kayen's hands found his waist underwater, pulling him close.

"I suggest," Kayen murmured, his lips tracing Arav's jaw, "we stop pretending this was ever about training."

He kissed him—deep, demanding, full of hours of restrained desire finally unleashed.

Arav responded with equal hunger, his hands tangling in Kayen's wet hair, their bodies pressed together in the warm water.

This was better than any training. Better than any plan or preparation.

This was them—bonded, in love, finally alone.

And for once, Arav wasn't thinking about Vatican heists or Lysander's threats or his mother's rejection.

He was just... present. Here. With Kayen.

Where he belonged.
