Chapter 17 - Chapter Sixteen — Surge of Power

The mana flared in her palm—unsteady, flickering, but undeniably real. It curled around her fingers like a living thread, warm and familiar in a way that made her chest tighten.

She had forgotten this part of herself.

But her body hadn't.

The world around her—the indigo sky, the glowing hills—responded to her awakening like a creature stirring from sleep. The air thickened, humming with quiet anticipation.

She lowered her hand slowly, letting the mana settle.

A soft crunch of footsteps drew her attention.

Eli emerged from the dim horizon, his expression a mix of relief and something more complicated. His clothes were torn, his hair disheveled, and he looked like he'd been fighting through a collapsing universe to reach her.

"You're safe," he said, breathless.

She raised an eyebrow. "You sound surprised."

"I am," he admitted. "This place isn't… gentle."

She glanced around. "It feels gentle now."

"That's because it's responding to you."

She swallowed. "Because of the mana."

Eli nodded. "Because it remembers you."

She hesitated. "And you?"

His gaze softened. "I never forgot."

The words hit her harder than she expected. She looked away, unsure how to respond, unsure what she wanted to respond.

Before she could speak, the air behind her rippled.

She turned sharply.

Cael stepped out of the distortion, steady and composed despite the faint glow still clinging to his coat. His eyes locked onto hers immediately—relief flickering across his face before he masked it.

"You're alright," he said quietly.

She exhaled. "You sound surprised too."

Cael's lips twitched. "You have a habit of falling into places you shouldn't survive."

She crossed her arms. "And you have a habit of pulling me out of them."

His expression softened. "I always will."

The air between them tightened—warm, charged, familiar in a way that made her pulse quicken. Eli shifted beside her, jaw tightening slightly, though he said nothing.

She stepped back, breaking the tension. "What is this place?"

Cael glanced around. "A memory-space. A remnant of the world before the cycle. It's unstable, but it's the closest thing to neutral ground we have."

Eli added, "It's also dangerous. The cycle can't fully reach it, but it can influence it."

She frowned. "Then why bring me here?"

"You brought yourself," Cael said. "Your mana did."

She blinked. "I didn't mean to."

"You didn't have to," he replied. "Instinct is enough."

She looked down at her hands. The faint glow had faded, but she could still feel the mana beneath her skin—like a second heartbeat.

"I used to be good at this," she murmured.

Cael stepped closer. "You were more than good. You were extraordinary."

Eli nodded. "You were the only one who could manipulate mana without a conduit. The only one who could see the cycle forming before it existed."

She swallowed. "And that's why they trapped me."

Cael's jaw tightened. "Yes."

The truth settled over her like a weight—heavy, but clarifying.

She wasn't just a victim of the cycle.

She was the reason it existed.

She was the threat it had been built to contain.

She took a slow breath. "Then I need to learn how to use this again."

Eli stepped forward. "We can teach you."

Cael nodded. "Together."

She looked between them—Eli's steady resolve, Cael's fierce loyalty—and felt something warm twist inside her. She didn't know what either of them meant to her yet, not fully, but she knew she trusted them.

And she knew she needed them.

"Alright," she said. "Teach me."

Eli smiled faintly. "Start small."

Cael lifted his hand. "Feel the mana. Don't force it."

She closed her eyes.

The world hummed.

The mana stirred.

She reached for it—

And the ground beneath them trembled.

Eli's eyes snapped open. "No—"

Cael grabbed her arm. "Lira, stop!"

But it was too late.

The mana surged—wild, uncontrolled, responding to her call with far more force than she intended.

The sky cracked open, splitting into jagged shards of light. The ground rippled violently, throwing them off balance.

A voice echoed through the fracture.

Cold.

Ancient.

Familiar.

[Anchor detected.]

Her blood ran cold.

Eli pulled her close. "Lira—"

Cael stepped in front of them, eyes blazing. "Get back!"

The sky shattered.

A massive shadow descended.
