Bella's POV
My fingers shook as I gripped my phone, staring at the banking app that displayed nothing but zeroes. Every last dollar had been transferred, and it barely scratched the surface of what we needed. My stomach churned violently, and a relentless headache hammered against my skull like someone was using it as a punching bag.
Kaden's face flashed through my mind, but I pushed the thought away before it could take root. He was barely keeping his own head above water. How could I drag him down further when he was already struggling to breathe? That wasn't an option.
My aunt came to mind next, and I ran trembling fingers through my bob, pressing them against my scalp as frustration bubbled up inside me. A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Right, because that worked out so well before," I muttered to the empty hallway.
