Chapter 37 - A Brief Taste of Life

The first light of dawn crept over the horizon, casting the room in a soft, golden glow. Dust motes floated lazily in

the air, catching the sunlight like tiny stars. Kai lay sprawled on the cracked wooden floor, staring at the ceiling,

his chest rising and falling in uneven rhythms. For the first time in what felt like forever, he felt… normal.

Beside him, a faint warmth pulsed in his mind, a subtle whisper he had grown used to over the months. His

sister. Though unseen, she was always there — a presence that comforted him, a tether to sanity in a world that

had been cruel and unrelenting.

"Careful," her voice whispered in his mind, soft as a breeze through autumn leaves. "You can only keep control

for a little while."

Kai cracked a small smile, feeling the fragility of the moment. "I know… but even a little is enough."

He pushed himself up and stepped outside. The air smelled of dew and new beginnings. Grass tickled his bare

feet, and the sun warmed his skin, bathing him in its gentle heat. He spun slowly, arms outstretched, letting the

world pour into him. The chirping of birds sounded sharper, the river nearby sang louder, and even the distant

hum of the city seemed alive.

For a moment, he forgot about the darkness, the wars, the enemies that hunted him. For a moment, he was just

Kai — a boy, alive, breathing, existing.

Then, a voice broke the spell. Soft. Weak. Fragile.

"Kai… help me…"

His heart dropped into his stomach. He knew that voice. It carried the weight of love and exhaustion. His

mother.

He ran, nearly tripping over his own feet, bursting through the doorway into the dimly lit interior of their home.

His mother lay on the floor, her body trembling, pale and cold to the touch. Her breaths were shallow, each one

a struggle.

Kai fell beside her, his hands trembling as he tried to steady her. "Mom! What's happening? Please… hold on!"

His sister's presence flared, wrapping around him like a protective shield. "Kai… don't panic. Stay calm. You

can help her," she whispered, her voice strong despite the fear in it.

But even her support couldn't stave off the terror in his chest. Kai felt a surge of helplessness, the kind that

made his chest ache and his vision blur. No matter how much power he had — or thought he had — it wasn't

enough.

His mother's lips curved into a faint, trembling smile. "It's… okay… my boy… be strong… for her," she

murmured, weakly pointing toward his sister. "Take care… of her… promise me."

Tears welled in Kai's eyes, blurring his vision. "I… I promise!" His voice cracked. "I'll protect her… I swear it!"

The last light in her eyes dimmed, and she exhaled one final time. Silence filled the room, thick and suffocating.

Kai's chest tightened, a raw scream threatening to tear itself from his throat. But he didn't scream. Not yet.

His sister pressed closer, her presence grounding him, holding the shards of his broken heart together. "Kai…

we survive together. Always," she whispered, soft yet unyielding.

He wrapped his arms around her presence, feeling the bond that had saved him countless times before. "I… I

don't want to lose anyone else," he said, his voice barely audible, shaking with grief.

"You won't," she replied firmly. "We'll face it… together."

Kai closed his eyes, letting himself feel the pain, the grief, the fleeting warmth of sunlight, and the love of his

sister all at once. It was a fragile moment, a bubble in a storm that threatened to consume him.

But even in the shadow of loss, a faint ember of hope glimmered.

And for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Kai believed — maybe just a little — that they could survive
