Chapter 9 - The Awakening Begins

The morning after their dinner at Mina's house, the world felt… altered. It wasn't loud, it wasn't violent it was subtle. The kind of shift you couldn't quite name, only sense, like standing at the mouth of a cave and feeling cold air sweep out to meet you. The silence of the house was heavier than usual, as if the walls themselves were listening.

Mina woke in a daze, her heart beating against her ribs. The remnants of a dream clung to her skin like damp mist. A massive wolf had stood before her, its shadow swallowing the horizon. Its fur was darker than midnight, yet its golden eyes cut through the dark like twin suns. It had not spoken with words, yet its presence thrummed inside her chest, echoing with the terrifying familiarity of something she had always known.

She jerked upright, gasping, a sheen of sweat chilling her skin.

The dream hadn't felt like a dream at all. It had felt like a warning.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She snatched it up, half hoping the noise would ground her.

Tasha: Hey, weird night. You good?

Mina frowned. Her throat tightened. Was it a coincidence? Or had Tasha felt it too? Her fingers flew across the screen.

Mina: Yeah, just a weird dream. You?

The reply came instantly, as if Tasha had been waiting.

Tasha: Tell me about it when I get there.

Mina let the phone drop onto the blanket and dragged a hand over her face. Lately, she had been overthinking everything school, the future, her restless nights. But this wasn't the same. This wasn't nerves. This was… something else.

Something that didn't belong to her, yet was moving through her anyway. Morning Tension

The smell of coffee usually meant comfort. Today it felt like a warning sign. Mina padded downstairs, each step heavier than the last, her body still thrumming with the echo of the wolf's eyes.

Her father sat at the table, newspaper in hand but utterly unread. His coffee steamed untouched in front of him. He wasn't reading. He was waiting.

"Morning," Mina said, trying to sound normal.

His head snapped up too quickly. "Morning."

She slid into her chair, pulling a piece of toast from the plate, though her stomach churned too much to eat. "Did you sleep okay?"

He hesitated. A pause stretched too long to be casual. "Fine. You?"

She picked at the bread. "Weird dreams."

His grip on the mug tightened just slightly, the twitch of his knuckles betraying him. "What kind of dreams?"

Mina studied him. He wanted to sound casual, but his voice carried the strain of someone guarding a secret.

"Nothing crazy," she lied, then reconsidered. "Just… a wolf. It felt like it was calling me."

Her father didn't flinch, but his stillness was sharper than any reaction. Not surprised. Not dismissing it either. He was hiding something.

"A wolf," he repeated carefully, as though testing the weight of the word.

Mina forced a laugh, though it rang hollow. "Yeah. Weird, right? It almost felt… familiar."

Her dad lifted the mug, took a deliberate sip, and set it back down. "Dreams can be strange that way."

That was it. No joke about fairy tales. No reminder that wolves didn't roam their suburban streets. Just a carefully measured nothing.

Mina narrowed her eyes. "Dad, is something wrong?"

He shook his head too quickly. "No, sweetheart. Just let me know if you start feeling different, okay?"

Her pulse quickened. "Different how?"

Before he could answer, the doorbell rang.

Tasha's Growing Suspicion

Mina opened the door to find Tasha standing with her arms crossed, her expression already demanding answers. "Okay. Weird night, weird morning. Spill."

Mina sighed and stepped aside. "Come in."

The moment they reached her room, Tasha dropped onto the bed like she owned it. Her eyes tracked Mina carefully. "You look like you didn't sleep at all."

Mina sat at the edge, raking her fingers through her hair. "I had this dream. A wolf. It was… calling me."

Tasha arched a brow. "Calling you? Like 'Hey Mina, join my exclusive fluffy wolf cult' calling?"

Mina shot her a glare. "I'm serious. It felt like it knew me. Like it was me."

Tasha's teasing smirk faltered. She tapped her chin. "That's freaky. You think it means something?"

Mina hesitated, biting her lip. "I don't know. But I feel… strange today. Like everything's louder. Sharper. I can hear things differently."

Tasha squinted at her. "Mina, you're not like, sick or anything, right?"

Mina shook her head. "No. Just… different."

Tasha leaned back. "Maybe you need to lay off the sugar."

Mina laughed despite herself, but the unease in her chest didn't budge. This wasn't sugar. This wasn't stress. Something inside her was waking up.

And it terrified her. Secrets Weighing Heavy

While the girls wrestled with strange dreams and growing unease, their parents fought a different battle.

Tasha's mother sat alone at her kitchen table, a small glass vial turning slowly between her fingers. Inside, a liquid shimmered faintly in the morning light. The witch had pressed it into her hand weeks ago with firm instructions: slip it into Tasha's drink when the time comes. It wouldn't harm her, but it would blur her awareness, veil her mind, keep her from seeing the truth too soon.

Her hand trembled around the vial. Could she really do this to her daughter?

Across town, Mina's father paced his office like a caged animal. Every word Mina had spoken replayed in his mind. A wolf… calling me. The first sign. He had prayed for more time. Prayed it might skip her entirely. But fate wasn't merciful. The blood in her veins had begun to stir.

She would shift. And soon.A Shift in the Air

That evening, the two girls sat on Mina's porch, watching the sun melt into the horizon. The sky was painted in bruised oranges and dusky violets, the kind of twilight that whispered of endings and beginnings.

Mina leaned against the railing, her gaze unfocused on the treetops. "Do you ever feel like something's coming? Something big. But you don't know what it is yet?"

Tasha turned her head. "That's oddly specific. And creepy."

Mina huffed a laugh. "I don't know. It's like… I can feel more lately. Every sound, every breath of wind and it's like the world turned up its volume."

Tasha studied her in silence for a moment. "You really have been acting weird." She nudged her shoulder. "Maybe it's stress. Or hormones. Or both."

"Yeah. Maybe," Mina said, though her voice betrayed her doubt.

The truth pulsed inside her chest, alive and restless. Something was shifting.

The First Sign

Later that night, Mina sat cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, when it happened.

A sharp, high-pitched sound pierced her skull. She winced, dropping her phone, clutching her head.

It wasn't coming from outside it was inside her.

She froze. She could hear everything. The tick of the clock, the soft creak of the floorboards, the rustle of branches outside, even the faint hum of a car passing three streets away.

Her breath caught. The world had never sounded so alive so overwhelming.

Her body trembled as if standing on the edge of a cliff, some unseen force urging her forward.

Something inside her was waking.

And she had no idea how to stop it.
