Chapter 29 - Chapter 29

Recovery Cave

The dim light of spiritual lanterns flickered against the cave walls.

Wang Tao lay still, his body still bound in bandages. His breathing was slow and heavy; each breath seemed to demand an immense effort. The pain had subsided, but the hollow sensation of the void remained.

The entrance to the cave opened slowly.

Wei Lian was the first to enter, his eyes widening as he saw Wang Tao awake.

"Wang Tao!" he whispered, his voice nearly failing. "You're awake!"

He rushed forward with genuine excitement. Behind him came Yan Li—nervous, distressed, and clearly conflicted. She couldn't hide it; her body trembled with every step. But seeing that he was alive, she let out a long sigh of relief.

She approached, trying to appear composed.

"You almost died, you idiot..." she said, trying to sound angry, but her voice betrayed her.

Wang Tao turned his face toward her. He didn't answer immediately. An awkward silence filled the space.

Finally, after a heavy sigh, he spoke. "I'm sorry."

The word was simple, weak. Yan Li clenched her teeth.

"Don't say you're sorry like that—as if you just dropped a paintbrush!"

Her anger was real; the mental confusion was blinding her emotions.

Wei Lian watched the scene in silence for a few seconds, then scratched the back of his neck.

"Technically... he dropped an Elder."

The air turned heavy. Yan Li spun around instantly.

"WEI LIAN!"

"What?!" He raised his hands defensively. "I'm just saying that, statistically, this is much worse."

Wang Tao closed his eyes for a moment, thinking.

Was it the Master? No, he would have no reason to tell them. Therefore...

He opened his eyes, looking at the innocent and slender Wei Lian. That innocent smile seemed... calculating. Analytical.

He perceives TOO much.

Wang Tao took another breath. Yan Li glared at Wei Lian, enraged.

"Wei Lian thinks it was you," she said. "I don't want to believe it."

Wei Lian cleared his throat. "I didn't say I was certain. Only that all variables point toward it."

Yan Li stared at him. "You talk about this like it's a math problem!"

"It's because..." he hesitated. "If I don't treat it as something logical, I'll lose my mind."

Another silence followed. Yan Li turned back to her eldest brother, her eyes filled with hesitation.

"Eldest Brother Wang... was it really you who killed him?"

It was difficult—the words were dragged from her throat, raw and painful.

Wang Tao took a deep breath. He didn't answer immediately. His gaze drifted to the bandages covering his body.

"If I had done such a thing..." he murmured, "do you really think I'd be lying here, half-dead?"

Yan Li hesitated. Wei Lian narrowed his eyes.

"That doesn't answer the question."

Wang Tao let out a short, humorless laugh. "It answers more than you think."

Silence.

"I got involved in something dangerous," he continued in a low voice. "Something far above my realm. That is why I ended up like this."

Yan Li took a step forward. "So you were involved..."

"It's better if you don't know the details."

The statement fell heavily, but it wasn't a full confession. Wei Lian crossed his arms.

"Were you involved or not?"

Wang Tao closed his eyes for an instant. When he spoke again, his voice was firm.

"Enough to nearly die."

The words hung heavy in the cave.

Yan Li frowned. Involved, but he didn't admit it. Nearly died, but didn't say how. What did it mean?

Wei Lian took the lead. "Why?"

Wang Tao didn't answer immediately, staring at the stone ceiling. "Because I didn't have a choice."

Another silence.

Wei Lian stepped forward. "Everyone always has a choice."

Wang Tao turned his face slowly toward him, his gaze weary and hollow.

"Do you really think so?"

The question came as a whisper, but it carried the weight of years. Wei Lian opened his mouth and closed it again. Something in that look wasn't that of a young disciple. It belonged to someone who had seen far too much.

Yan Li felt a shiver. "Brother Wang... who forced you?"

Wang Tao didn't look away from Wei Lian. "How long have you been in the sect?"

"One month," Wei Lian answered automatically.

"And you, Yan Li?"

"Two months..."

Wang Tao finally looked away. "Then you know nothing about how things really work here. About what happens in the shadows. About..."

He stopped, taking a deep breath.

"About the prices some must pay just to survive."

The silence returned, heavier than before.

Yan Li wanted to ask more, as did Wei Lian, but something in Wang Tao's voice—the way he said "survive"—stopped them.

Wang Tao opened his eyes again.

"Now..." he said, firm but not cruel. "Please. If you still consider me your brother, let me rest."

It wasn't a request—it was a protection. Wei Lian understood first, nodding slightly.

"Let's go, Yan Li."

She hesitated, looking at Wang Tao one last time. She wanted to say something, but didn't know what. She simply followed Wei Lian out.

The cave returned to silence.

---

Wang Tao stared at the stone ceiling.

A half-truth worked. For now. But Wei Lian... that boy won't forget. He won't stop watching.

A problem for later. He closed his eyes again.

I need to rest. I need to recover. Because the Invisible Hand won't let me rest for long.
