Chapter 33 - Ch.33

Kai's POV

Recovery Girl's office smelled like antiseptic and hard candy.

I sat on the examination table, shirtless, while she inspected my wounds. The gash along my ribs had been cleaned and stitched by the paramedics, but she insisted on checking everything herself.

"You're lucky," she said, pressing along my side. I winced. "A few centimeters deeper and you'd have punctured a lung."

"I've been told I'm lucky a lot today."

"Hmph. Luck runs out eventually." She stepped back, studying me with sharp eyes. "Multiple contusions, two cracked ribs, lacerations on your arms and torso. For someone who fought that creature, you got off light."

"I mostly dodged."

"Mostly isn't good enough against something like that." She reached for a tube of ointment. "I'm going to use my quirk to accelerate your healing. It will drain your stamina, so you'll need rest afterward."

"How much rest?"

"At least twenty-four hours. No training, no strenuous activity." She gave me a pointed look. "No heroics."

"Yes ma'am."

She leaned in and kissed my forehead.

The effect was immediate. Warmth spread through my body, concentrated on my injuries. I felt the cracked ribs shift and mend, the lacerations knit together, the bruises fade.

When she pulled back, I was exhausted.

"There." She nodded in satisfaction. "The major injuries are healed. You'll still be sore for a few days, but nothing serious."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me. Thank whatever guardian angel kept you alive long enough to reach my office." She gestured toward a side room. "There's a bed through there. Rest. I'll let you know when you can leave."

"Can I have visitors?"

"One at a time. And only for a few minutes." She fixed me with a stern look. "Rest is not optional, young man."

"Understood."

I made my way to the side room and collapsed onto the bed.

Within seconds, I was asleep.

I woke to soft voices.

"...been out for three hours. Recovery Girl said he needs rest."

"I know. I just wanted to see him."

Momo's voice. And someone else. Recovery Girl, maybe.

I opened my eyes.

The room was dim, late afternoon light filtering through curtains. Momo sat in a chair beside my bed, hands folded in her lap. She looked tired, still wearing her hero costume from the USJ trip.

"You're awake." She leaned forward. "How do you feel?"

"Like I got hit by a truck." I pushed myself up slowly. "How long was I out?"

"Three hours. Recovery Girl healed your injuries, but she said you'd be exhausted."

"She wasn't kidding." I rubbed my face. "What happened after I passed out?"

"Everyone was sent home early. School's cancelled tomorrow while they investigate the security breach." She hesitated. "Aizawa-sensei is in serious condition. Multiple fractures, damage to his face. He'll recover, but it will take time."

"And the villains?"

"Escaped. The police are searching, but..." She shook her head. "They vanished."

I processed that. The League of Villains, still out there. Still dangerous.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Me?" She seemed surprised by the question. "I'm fine. A few bruises, nothing serious."

"That's not what I meant."

She was quiet for a moment.

"I was scared," she admitted. "When those villains surrounded us in the water. When that creature attacked you." Her voice wavered slightly. "I've trained for dangerous situations. Studied villain encounters. But experiencing it..."

"It's different."

"Yes. Completely different." She looked at her hands. "I froze at first. When you told us to swim to the boat. I should have created weapons immediately, but I just... froze."

"You made the life preserver for Ochako. You made the motor to get us to shore. You didn't freeze, Momo. You adapted."

"After you handled everything."

"That's called teamwork."

She laughed weakly. "You're very good at making people feel better."

"I'm just being honest."

She looked at me then. Really looked, her eyes searching my face.

"You could have died."

"But I didn't."

"That's not..." She took a breath. "When you stepped out to face that monster, I thought I was going to watch you die. And I couldn't do anything to stop it."

"Momo..."

"I've never felt so helpless." Her voice cracked. "So useless. All my training, all my preparation, and I couldn't protect the person I..."

She stopped herself. Looked away.

"The person you what?" I asked quietly.

"Nothing. It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

She was silent for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice was barely a whisper.

"The person I care about."

I reached out and took her hand. She tensed, then relaxed, her fingers intertwining with mine.

"I care about you too," I said.

"Do you?"

"I wouldn't have invited you to that study session otherwise."

"That was my idea."

"I could have said no."

She smiled slightly. "I suppose you could have."

We sat there in comfortable silence. Her thumb traced circles on the back of my hand.

"Kai?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm glad you're okay."

"Me too."

She leaned closer. Her free hand came up to touch my face, fingers gentle against my cheek.

"I've been thinking," she said softly. "About Saturday. About what happened before my parents interrupted."

"The kiss?"

"Yes." Her cheeks flushed. "I haven't been able to stop thinking about it."

"Neither have I."

"Really?"

"Really."

She was close now. Close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in her dark eyes. Close enough to smell her perfume, something floral and subtle.

"I want to kiss you again," she whispered.

"Then kiss me."

She did.

The kiss was different from before.

Softer. More certain. She knew what she wanted now, and she wasn't afraid to take it.

Her hand slid from my cheek to the back of my neck, pulling me closer. I wrapped my arm around her waist, ignoring the twinge of soreness in my side.

"Kai," she breathed against my lips.

"Momo."

She kissed me deeper. Her tongue brushed against mine, hesitant at first, then bolder. I let her set the pace, following her lead.

When we finally broke apart, she was breathing hard.

"That was..." She touched her lips. "Wow."

"Yeah."

"I want to do that more often."

"I'm not going to argue."

She laughed, the sound light and happy. Different from her usual composed demeanor.

"You make me feel things I've never felt before," she admitted. "It's terrifying and wonderful at the same time."

"I know the feeling."

"Do you?"

"More than you know."

She leaned in to kiss me again.

The door opened.

Ochako stood in the doorway.

She was still in her hero costume, hair slightly disheveled. Her hand was raised like she'd been about to knock.

Her eyes went from me to Momo. To our intertwined hands. To the position we were in, faces inches apart.

"Oh," she said.

Momo pulled back quickly, her face going red.

"Uraraka. I didn't... we weren't..."

"I can see what you were doing." Ochako's voice was flat. "Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt."

"You're not interrupting," I said. "Come in."

"I should go." She took a step back. "I just wanted to check if you were okay. You're clearly fine."

"Ochako, wait."

"It's fine, Kai. Really." She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "I'm glad you're feeling better."

She turned and left.

The door clicked shut behind her.

Momo stared at the closed door.

"That was..." She swallowed. "Awkward."

"Yeah."

"She likes you."

"I know."

"And she just saw us..." She covered her face with her hands. "Oh god. This is terrible."

"It's not that bad."

"She looked so hurt, Kai." Momo lowered her hands. "I feel awful."

"I'll talk to her."

"And say what? 'Sorry you saw me kissing someone else, but don't worry, I like you too?'" She shook her head. "This is a mess."

I didn't disagree.

"I should go after her," Momo said, standing. "Try to explain."

"Explain what?"

"I don't know. Something." She looked at me helplessly. "What do I even say?"

"Maybe let me handle it."

"Are you sure?"

"It's my mess. I should clean it up."

She hesitated, then nodded.

"Okay. But..." She leaned down and kissed me quickly. "Don't make me regret trusting you."

"I won't."

She left, closing the door softly behind her.

I lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

This was going to be complicated.

I found Ochako in the hallway outside Recovery Girl's office.

She was sitting on a bench, head down, hands clasped in her lap. She didn't look up when I approached.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey."

"Can we talk?"

"Do we have to?"

"I think we should."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she sighed and scooted over, making room on the bench.

I sat beside her. Not too close, not too far.

"I'm sorry," I said. "That you had to see that."

"It's fine."

"It's not fine. You're upset."

"I'm not upset." Her voice cracked. "I'm just... confused."

"About what?"

"About you. About Momo. About..." She wiped her eyes. "Everything."

I waited. Let her gather her thoughts.

"I know we're not together," she said finally. "We haven't even gone on our date yet. I don't have any right to be jealous."

"But you are."

"Yes." She laughed bitterly. "Stupid, right? Being jealous of something I don't even have."

"It's not stupid. It's human."

"I just... I thought..." She shook her head. "Never mind. It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me, Ochako. Tell me."

She turned to look at me. Her eyes were red, tears threatening to spill.

"I thought I was special," she whispered. "When you agreed to go on a date with me. When you said you liked me. I thought maybe..." She trailed off.

"You are special."

"But so is Momo."

I couldn't deny that.

"Yes," I said. "She is."

"So what does that mean? For us?"

I took a breath. This was the moment. The conversation I'd known was coming but had hoped to delay.

"Ochako. I need to tell you something about myself. About my quirk."

"Your quirk?"

"It's not just enhancement. It's... more complicated than that."

She wiped her eyes, curiosity replacing some of the hurt. "What do you mean?"

"My quirk lets me absorb energy from physical contact. Specifically... intimate contact." I chose my words carefully. "The closer the contact, the more energy I absorb."

"Intimate contact? Like..."

"Like what you saw with Momo. And more."

She stared at me. Processing.

"Are you saying... you need to kiss people? For your quirk?"

"Among other things."

"What other things?"

I held her gaze. "I think you can guess."

Her face went red. "Oh."

"My quirk gets stronger the more connections I form. The more people I'm intimate with." I looked down at my hands. "It's not something I chose. It's just how I am."

"So when you said you liked me..."

"I meant it. I do like you. But I also like Momo. And there are... others."

"Others?"

"It's complicated."

She was quiet for a long time. I could practically see the gears turning in her head.

"So you're saying," she said slowly, "that you can't be with just one person."

"I'm saying my quirk makes it difficult. Not impossible, but difficult."

"And you want to be with me... and Momo... and whoever else?"

"Only if you're okay with it."

"And if I'm not?"

"Then we stay friends. No pressure, no expectations."

She turned away, staring at the opposite wall.

"This is a lot to take in."

"I know."

"I need time. To think."

"Take all the time you need."

She stood, still not looking at me.

"I'm glad you're okay, Kai. Really. When you fought that monster..." Her voice caught. "I was so scared."

"I know."

"That's why this is hard. Because I do care about you. A lot." She finally met my eyes. "But I don't know if I can share."

"That's fair."

"I'll... I'll let you know. When I've figured things out."

"Okay."

She started to walk away, then paused.

"Kai?"

"Yeah?"

"Does Momo know? About your quirk?"

"Not the full details. Not yet."

"Are you going to tell her?"

"Yes. Soon."

She nodded slowly. "Good. She deserves to know what she's getting into."

"You both do."

Something flickered in her expression. Hurt, maybe. Or understanding. It was hard to tell.

"Goodbye, Kai."

"Goodbye, Ochako."

She walked away. I watched her go until she turned the corner and disappeared.

I made my way back to the recovery room.

Recovery Girl was waiting, arms crossed.

"That looked like a difficult conversation."

"You were listening?"

"These walls are thin." She gestured toward the bed. "Lie down. You need more rest."

"I'm fine."

"You're exhausted, emotionally and physically. Lie down."

I didn't argue. Just climbed back onto the bed and closed my eyes.

"Young man."

"Yeah?"

"Affairs of the heart are always complicated. Don't rush things."

"I know."

"Do you? Because from where I'm standing, you're juggling fire with your bare hands."

I opened my eyes. She was watching me with an expression that was equal parts concern and amusement.

"I'm doing my best."

"That's all any of us can do." She pulled a blanket over me. "Rest now. Tomorrow will bring its own challenges."

I closed my eyes again.

She was right. Tomorrow would be complicated.

But right now, I just needed sleep.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand.

I grabbed it, squinting at the screen.

Nemuri: Recovery Girl says you're resting. Good.

She told you?

I asked. Are you okay?

Tired. Sore. But okay.

I wanted to come see you, but she said no visitors until tomorrow.

Probably for the best. It's been a long day.

A pause.

I saw the footage, Kai. The fight with that creature.

I know.

You were incredible. And terrifying.

Terrifying?

Watching you put yourself in danger like that. Knowing I couldn't help. Another pause. I understand now why they call it the hardest part of being a hero's partner.

Nemuri...

I'm not complaining. Just... processing. A pause. I love you. Rest well.

I love you too.

I set the phone aside and stared at the ceiling.

Nemuri. Yu. Momo. Ochako.

Four women. Four relationships. Four sets of feelings to navigate.

It was a lot. Maybe too much.

But it was my life now. For better or worse.

I closed my eyes and let sleep take me.
