Chapter 18 - When the Moon Pulls

The first symptom was heat.

Kael noticed it before sunset.

It wasn't the kind that came from anger or battle. It was deeper — crawling under his skin, settling in his bones like something waking up too early.

The Blood Moon was still three nights away.

It shouldn't have started yet.

He stood near the edge of the clearing, jaw tight, trying to regulate his breathing. The air felt thicker than usual. Sounds sharper. Every scent carried weight.

And Lucien's scent—

It was wrong.

Stronger.

Sweeter.

Kael's wolf shifted restlessly beneath the surface.

Mate.

The word echoed like instinct instead of thought.

He clenched his fists.

This wasn't the mating cycle.

It was the curse.

The Blood Moon amplified bonds. Twisted them. Forced them to surface.

And the bond between him and Lucien had been growing.

Too quickly.

Behind him, the cabin door opened.

Kael felt it before he heard it.

The thread between them pulled taut.

Lucien stepped outside.

He looked composed.

But Kael could hear it — the subtle difference in his breathing. Slower than human. Faster than usual vampire stillness.

"You feel it too," Kael said without turning.

Lucien didn't pretend ignorance.

"Yes."

The single word carried weight.

Kael finally faced him.

Lucien's eyes were darker than usual. Not fully red — but close.

"How bad?" Kael asked.

Lucien hesitated.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On how close I stand to you."

The air shifted.

Kael didn't move.

"Come closer," he said.

Lucien stared at him.

"That's a mistake."

"Do it."

A long pause.

Then Lucien stepped forward.

One step.

Two.

Three.

With each one, the bond reacted violently.

Heat spread across Kael's chest like a brand.

Lucien inhaled sharply.

By the time they stood a foot apart, the space between them felt electrified.

Kael's pulse thundered.

Lucien's fingers twitched at his sides.

"Your heart," Lucien murmured, voice lower than usual. "It's louder tonight."

Kael swallowed.

"You're hearing it because you're focused on it."

"No," Lucien said quietly.

"I'm hearing it because it's calling."

The words hit somewhere dangerous.

Kael's wolf pushed harder.

Claim.

He stepped forward without realizing it.

Now they were inches apart.

Lucien's cool body heat mixed with Kael's unnatural warmth.

Opposites.

Pulling.

The bond pulsed painfully.

Lucien's hand rose slowly — not touching, just hovering near Kael's chest.

"If this continues," Lucien said, voice strained now, "the Moon will force a reaction."

Kael's breathing deepened.

"Define reaction."

Lucien's gaze flicked to his mouth for half a second.

Then back to his eyes.

"You don't want that answer."

A tremor ran through Kael's body.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Want.

The heat intensified suddenly — sharp and dizzying.

Kael grabbed Lucien's wrist before he could stop himself.

The contact was explosive.

Lucien gasped.

The bond flared so violently it almost hurt.

For a split second, Kael saw it —

Not the clearing.

Not the present.

A flash of something else.

Lucien beneath him.

Moonlight on bare skin.

Blood.

Breathless whispers.

The vision vanished instantly.

Kael released him like he'd been burned.

Lucien stepped back just as fast.

They stared at each other.

Neither speaking.

Neither pretending that hadn't just happened.

"You saw it too," Kael said quietly.

Lucien didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

The Blood Moon wasn't just amplifying emotion.

It was amplifying possibility.

And the bond was no longer passive.

It was preparing.

Lucien turned away first.

"This is dangerous."

"Yes."

"If we lose control—"

"We won't."

Lucien faced him again sharply. "You can't guarantee that."

Kael stepped closer once more — slower this time.

Deliberate.

"I don't lose control."

Lucien's lips parted slightly.

"You already are."

The words landed softly.

Truthfully.

Kael's jaw tightened.

Because Lucien wasn't wrong.

He had fought rogues without hesitation.

But this?

This quiet pull?

This was harder.

"Then tell me how to stop it," Kael demanded.

Lucien went silent.

Then, finally—

"You can't."

The honesty in his voice stripped away the last illusion of distance.

The Blood Moon rose slowly above the treeline.

Not full yet.

But bright.

Too bright.

Its light spilled across the clearing, silver and accusing.

The bond reacted instantly.

Kael staggered half a step.

Lucien grabbed him automatically.

Their bodies collided.

Chest to chest.

The heat surged violently.

Kael's control slipped for one terrifying second.

His hand slid to Lucien's waist.

Lucien's fingers dug into his shoulders.

Their breaths mixed.

Sharp.

Unsteady.

"This is the curse," Lucien whispered.

Kael's voice dropped to something almost feral.

"No."

Lucien's eyes flickered red.

"Yes."

The moonlight intensified.

The bond pulsed again —

Not painful.

Hungry.

Kael leaned in.

Not fully conscious of the decision.

Just pulled.

Lucien didn't move away.

Their foreheads almost touched.

And then—

A distant howl split the night.

Both of them froze.

Another howl answered.

Then another.

Not rogues.

Not challengers.

Something else.

Kael's head snapped toward the forest.

Lucien's grip tightened.

"That," Lucien said quietly, "is not your pack."

The Blood Moon glowed brighter.

And whatever was coming—

Was coming because of them.
