Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Morning After the Jackpot

The black Ferrari pulled into the driveway at exactly 4:00 PM on Sunday. It was the first time in Manny's life that Javier had delivered him home at the promised hour.

Manny practically tumbled out of the car, his fedora slightly lopsided, clutching a oversized stuffed lion and a bag from a high-end magic shop. His face was flushed with the kind of pure, unadulterated joy that I hadn't seen since before the accident. "Mason! Jay! Mom! I saw a man make a tiger disappear! And Papa let me choose the music the whole way home!"

Gloria rushed out, her anxiety melting into a radiant smile as she gathered Manny into a hug. Jay stood on the porch, his arms crossed, his eyes narrowed as he watched Javier step out of the car.

Javier looked... exhausted. The usual sparkle in his eye was replaced by the glazed look of a man who had spent forty-eight hours being a responsible parent under the threat of financial ruin. He adjusted his sunglasses, looking at me with a mixture of resentment and newfound wariness.

"He is a persistent one, your Manny," Javier said, leaning against the hood of the car. "He wanted to know the history of every fountain. My head, it is spinning with the 'why' and the 'how.'"

"That's called parenting, Javier," Jay muttered, stepping down from the porch. "Though I'm surprised you didn't 'accidentally' lose him at the baccarat table."

Javier's jaw tightened. He shot a glance at me—a silent acknowledgment of the 'Delgado Legacy' leash. "No. The cards, they did not call to me this weekend. I was... focused."

Manny was busy regaling Gloria with a story about a steakhouse, and for a moment, the yard felt like a normal family gathering. But I could see the cracks. Javier wasn't happy; he was defeated. He had played the part of the hero because I had forced his hand, but the "poetry" he always spoke of was gone. He was now just a man paying off a debt.

[INTERVIEW - JAY]Jay: "I've spent ten years being the 'bad guy' who had to explain why Javier didn't show up. Then Mason comes along, pulls some strings I didn't even know existed, and suddenly Javier is the Punctual Parent of the Year? It's great for Manny, don't get me wrong. But seeing Javier look that miserable... it's the best gift I've had in a long time. I just wish I knew exactly what Mason has on him. I've seen that look before—it's the look of a guy who's realized the house always wins, and in this case, the house is my fifteen-year-old stepson."

After Gloria took Manny inside to unpack, Javier walked over to me. He didn't bother with the "my lion" routine this time.

"You have made me a ghost in my own life, Mason," he whispered. "I have the money, I have the car, but I cannot move without your lawyers watching the shadow I cast."

"You still have your son," I replied, my voice steady. "Manny thinks you're a god today. That should be enough for you. If it isn't, that's your failure, not mine."

"And what of you?" Javier asked, his eyes searching mine. "You did not come. You stayed here to watch the gate. You do not want the 'magic' of your father?"

"I don't need magic, Javier. I have reality. And reality says that if you try to pull that 'emergency' stunt next month for Manny's birthday, the trust fund settles the land rights in Bogota permanently in Gloria's name. Enjoy the drive back to the airport."

Javier didn't reply. He got back into the Ferrari, the engine roaring with a hollow bravado, and sped away. I watched the taillights fade, feeling the weight of the Total Recall. In the original show, this cycle of heartbreak continued for seasons. Now, the cycle was broken, replaced by a cold, calculated peace.

I turned to go inside, but Jay was still there, leaning against the doorframe.

"Vegas, huh?" Jay asked.

"Vegas," I confirmed.

"You're a terrifying kid, Mason. You know that?"

"I'm a Pritchett, Jay," I said, repeating his own words back to him. "We play to dominate."

Jay chuckled, a dry, appreciative sound, and clapped me on the shoulder. "Yeah. I guess we do."

As I walked up the stairs, my thoughts shifted. Javier was handled for now, but the school year was starting to ramp up. My Peak Athlete Physique was already drawing scouts, and with the "Miracle" fame growing, the quiet life I had planned was becoming impossible. It was time to stop managing the past and start building the future.
