Chapter 8 - A Memory

"In the Air!! Flying words!!"

Dropping both the shard and the claw to the ground, Azdins face turned deathly pale as he fell and hurdily squirmed away. Panicked, Hugo stood up while gripping onto his new short saber tightly.

His eyes darted around everywhere, scanning each and everything that came into view, all the way from every tree stump to even the smallest blades of grass.

'If it could scare him that badly, then I better take it seriously.'

The more he looked though.. the more he began to doubt. Until, he realized that his fear was miss placed.

"Azdin.. what in god's name are you talking about."

His face still white as snow, Azdin aimed his finger right at the air.

"Right there.. huh?"

But when he looked there again, the letters had disappeared. There was not even a trace of them left behind, as if they never had existed in the first place.

"????"

Sighing, Hugo sat back down without hiding his immense disappointment.

"I swear I'm not crazy, all kinds of strange stuff have been happening, but this is the weirdest one yet!!"

"Oh yeah? Like what?"

His brows pulled together in a tight, worried knot that betrayed his nervousness. And then in a low, cautious voice, he uttered,

"Every time I kill something, I hear voices..."

Staring at him hard, Hugo didn't even bother commenting.

'So he's still blood thirsty, AND insane.'

Despite that though, Azdin could see that Hugo wasn't taking him seriously. Starting to doubt himself now, his gaze fell back down on the claw and soul shard once more.

Curiously, he picked both items back up, and not even a second later..

[Compatibility confirmed]

[Would you like to create a memory?]

Not letting panic take hold yet again, he quickly calmed himself down. He stared at the flying words for a short while, randomly dropping and then picking up the materials just for the runes to follow along too.

Next he tried just holding onto the crystal, and then claw on its own too. Both times, the strange runes did not appear, which only made him even more intrigued.

Noticing his odd behaviour, Hugo asked.

"What did they say anyway?"

Funnily enough, although Azdin remembered how to speak the runic language, he had no clue on how to read or even write. But that didn't stop that insidious voice from whispering what he could only assume to be it's translation into his ear.

"It's asking me if I want to create a memory."

It was also then that he understood,

'I'm the only one that can see them?'

And no one else could probably hear that voice too. A few moments later, he also added,

"Should I try it?"

Although he seemed genuine, Hugo could not tell if he was being serious. He just gave a vague answer.

"Do whatever you want."

Shrugging his shoulders, Azdin picked up both the crystal and the claw. But it was like the voice had already understood what he wanted. Without him even giving a formal command, something truly astounding occured.

"Uh."

The crystal, and the make a shift short saber, both slowly began to be unmade right before him in a torrent of white sparks and strings. It was as if their very existence were slowly being unraveled, until nothing but thin air existed where they once were.

Watching the peculiar event, Azdins curiosity only grew.

Hugo on the other hand...

"YOU FOOL! WHAT DID YOU DO!???"

Quickly, Azdin shot back, panic now edging his voice.

"I just accepted the thing, I didn't know that would happen!"

"DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND HOW VALUABLE THOSE WERE?!?"

'Why the hell is he so angry, they're mine anyway..'

Amidst Hugo's constant nagging, after a brief while the strange runes manifested once more. However, they were even greater in number, and even stranger.

Once more, the voice whispered into his ear.

Name: Azdin

True Name: —

Rank: Awakened

Soul Fragments: [745/2000]

Attributes: [Descendent], [Brilliance]

Memories: [Azure Saber]

Aspect: —

'What am I even looking at.'

The only thing he could recognise was his own name of course, but after staring at them a bit more, he recognised the word 'memories' as something that the runes from earlier wanted to make. A bit after that, was something completely unfamiliar.

'Azure...? Is that what it made?'

Much like before, the strange voice had responded to his thoughts. And once more without commanding it verbally, those strange strings from before began to manifest.

Rather than getting rid of something though, it seemed to bring it to reality.

Ceasing his storm of complaints, Hugo went silent as he witnessed the odd scene.

The white glowing strings drifted though the air like threads of light, trembling with quiet energy. They twisted and crossed one another, weaving tighter and tighter, their glow intensifying as they converged.

Where they met, it's light condensed, hardening into a short saber of pure azure blue, much like the claw once before. However, it's shape seemed to differ ever so slightly, looking a tad bit more refined and sharp, more befitting of being called a blade then whatever Hugo had made.

At it's base, the glow softened into a finely crafted handle, wrapped in a deep blue leather, perfectly fitted for a hand compared to Hugo's crude work.

Taking ahold of it, Azdin could instantly tell that it wasn't just it's outer appearance that had changed. It's whole balance was completely different too. Compared to his own sword, this one seemed to be even greater then that.

Hugo was completely, and utterly bewildered.

"Azdin.. what the hell!?"

Just then, even more runes began to manifest. This time they described the weapon in greater detail.

Memory: Azure Saber

Memory rank: Awakened

Memory type: Weapon

Tier: I

Enchantments: —

Memory description: [This blade is nothing impressive.]

Hearing it's description, he couldn't help but feel awfully stunned, and also confused.

'Tier.. 1? Is it because I only used one crystal? And the enchantment section is empty, is it meant to be for magic or something?'

Gazing at the weapon, Hugo extended out his hand to which Azdin quickly passed it over without a shred of hesitation.

Investigating it too, Hugo also came to the conclusion that it's quality was in an entirely different world than before. Truly something peculiar had occurred just now.

"I'm not quite sure what this all is. The voices are.. uh.."

'How do I explain this??'

Cutting in, Hugo suggested,

"Maybe it's sorcery?"

Azdins eyes widened in slight surprise, his gaze snapping back onto the Azure saber.

"Like magic?"

"That's one way to put it"

Hugo shrugged, as he passed the weapon back to Azdin.

"I'm no expert on the topic so don't question me too much about it..Although."

With a sly smile creeping on his face, he lightly turned his head towards the pile of materials nearby. He too, began to feel a strange sense of curiosity burning within him.

"We still have two crystals left over. How about giving them a try?"
