Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Orario

"So… this is the Labyrinth City…" he murmured.

In front of the city gate, there was a line of carriages and people of many different races. After nearly an hour, it was finally Issei's turn.

"Identification!" the guard said.

"Good morning, ma'am! My name is Issei Uzui…" He paused for a second. "…I don't have identification. My goal is to register with the Guild, join a Familia, and become an adventurer."

"The entry fee for non-residents is 5,000 valis. After payment, proceed to the Pantheon—that's where you register. Do you need directions to get there?"

"No, thank you. Here's the amount."

'Shakti Varma…' Captain of the Ganesha Familia. Her presence was firm, cold, and centered—the kind of person who maintained order with nothing but a look.

Issei remembered well: the Ganesha Familia was the Guild's task force, responsible for maintaining public order and protecting the city.

'She probably didn't sense any danger from me and let me pass.'

Walking through Orario's streets, Issei took in several familiar landmarks. Babel Tower, towering high with its fifty floors; the Blue Pharmacy, headquarters of the Miach Familia; and the famous Hostess of Fertility, the restaurant run by Mama Mia.

Other buildings stood out too—like the Apollo Familia's base.

That one? He stayed far away from it.

His destination was the Guild.

When he arrived, Issei introduced himself at the front desk and explained his intentions.

The receptionist, Misha Flott—a girl with pink hair and pink eyes—accompanied him.

To register as an adventurer, he only needed to belong to a Familia. There were no additional fees.

"Issei-san, here's the list of Familias currently recruiting. If you need anything, just talk to this Onee-san right here!"

She said it with a wink.

She's way too energetic… Experience taught me that friendliness at the Guild never comes without a reason.

Also, if his memory served, this Guild employee was friends with Eina Tulle. Misha loved to complain, but she did her work—whether correctly or not, nobody really knew.

From the recruitment list, aside from the Ganesha and Apollo Familias, he didn't recognize any of them.

But he already had a Familia in mind.

I'll join the Miach Familia.

The god Miach was known for his generosity.

In the original story, he traded everything the Familia had in order to treat their surviving members, taking on an enormous debt to the Dian Cecht Familia.

The members were healed, but… the Familia's captain, Naaza Erisuis, ended up with a polished silver prosthetic on her right arm.

With an absurd debt already hanging over them, the Miach Familia fell into crisis and collapsed.

In the end, only Miach and Naaza remained—selling potions, barely paying the debt.

"Misha-san, is there any Familia that makes use of herbalist skills?"

"Hmm… yes. There's the Dian Cecht Familia…"

She listed a few.

"And lastly, the Miach Familia. Personally, I don't recommend you join the Miach Familia. They have a huge debt to the Dian Cecht Familia. On top of that, they only have one member, and she's debilitated."

"Really…? Well, thank you for the information. I'm going!"

"Good luck!"

And with that, Issei headed toward the Blue Pharmacy.

"The god Miach likes the color blue…"

The building was modest—two floors, white-and-blue finishing, wooden details. Nothing flashy. On the door, an OPEN sign swayed gently, just beneath the Miach Familia emblem: the figure of a man with a healthy body.

Plim. The doorbell chimed.

Hearing the sound, a tall man—around 180 cm—handsome, with eyes and hair as blue as the sea, turned toward the entrance. He set down the box of potions he had been carrying on the counter.

"Naaza, finish organizing the potions for me, please. I'll handle the customer."

"Understood, Miach-sama."

"Welcome to the Blue Pharmacy. How can I help you, adventurer?"

His tone was neutral, but there was sincere warmth in his voice—genuine happiness at receiving a new customer.

"Good morning, Lord Miach. I'm here to ask your permission to join your Familia as its newest member."

As he finished, Issei bowed deeply—almost a full ninety degrees.

When he straightened up, the atmosphere had changed.

The chienthrope stopped arranging potions and looked in their direction.

Miach narrowed his eyes slightly, as if searching for something within Issei's words.

Lies. Deceit.

A god could see people's intentions—there was no fooling them.

And besides, the Miach Familia's situation wasn't exactly a well-kept secret.

"May I have your name?" Miach asked.

"Issei Uzui."

"Are you new to Orario?"

"Yes. I arrived today. I went to the Guild to register as an adventurer, but I need a Familia."

"You do know we have a debt of over one hundred million valis to the Dian Cecht Familia?"

"Yes. In fact, the receptionist at the Guild recommended other Familias because of that."

At that, Miach's eyebrow twitched slightly. Still, he maintained his posture.

"I need to confirm something."

His voice turned more serious.

"Joining this Familia means inheriting our debts, failures, and enemies. Are you sure? And… why did you choose our Familia?"

"I'm sure, Miach-sama."

He took a deep breath before continuing.

"I chose your Familia because…"

He spoke of the village where he grew up—of work, training, and the bonds he formed. Of food scarcity, of sharing a room with five different children. Even so, they kept moving forward.

Until the day everything finally started getting better… and the Infant Dragon appeared, destroying everything he loved.

At the end, he recounted his month-long journey to Orario.

"That's why I want to overcome this challenge with you."

He lifted his gaze.

"You learn someone's character when they help you at your lowest point."

"…"

Miach fell silent. He searched for a lie in every word—any sign of falseness. He found none.

Finally, he exhaled, and a gentle smile formed.

In the back, Naaza couldn't hold back a few tears. Her hand moved, almost instinctively, to the silver arm hidden beneath her long sleeve and glove.

Her thoughts were cut short by Miach's voice.

"Welcome to the Miach Familia, Issei-kun."

His tone was warm.

"I have high expectations for you. I'm sure you'll achieve great things."

"I'll begin the process of granting you a Falna."

"I'm ready!"

Miach let a drop of blood fall on Issei's back, reading the information that surfaced: name, age (14), weight (75 kg), height (180 cm), and many other details. But soon, his focus narrowed to what truly mattered.

Miach remained silent for a few seconds, studying the numbers carefully. There was no exaggerated shock—only genuine attention.

"Hmm… your initial parameters are interesting."

Issei straightened his posture.

"Interesting… in what sense, Miach-sama?"

"Your MAG is high for someone with no experience as an adventurer. Your DEX and your LUK stand out too. That isn't common."

Miach paused briefly.

"You trained before receiving a Falna. A lot."

Issei nodded slightly.

"Yes, sir. All I had was time… and necessity."

Miach smiled faintly, then returned to a neutral tone.

"There's something I need to make clear."

He turned fully to Issei.

"By default, most adventurers hide their status, especially high numbers. It's a form of self-preservation. Envy, exploitation, unnecessary trouble…"

Issei took a breath before answering.

"I understand, Miach-sama."

He gave a small bow.

"But… I don't intend to hide my status from Naaza-san."

The room went quiet.

At the back of the shop, Naaza stopped what she was doing, listening closely.

Miach raised his eyebrows slightly.

"May I ask why?"

"She's my Familia companion."

Issei answered without hesitation.

"If we're going to share risks, debts, and responsibilities, hiding something like that would be… disrespectful."

Miach stared at him for a few long seconds. Then his shoulders eased.

"…You really chose a difficult path."

He let out a soft chuckle.

"But I'm relieved to hear that."

Naaza turned her face away, trying to hide it, but a faint blush rose on her cheeks.

"Don't worry," Miach continued.

"Your status won't be disclosed beyond what's necessary. The Guild needs to register it, of course, but within the Familia we'll handle it discreetly."

"Thank you, Miach-sama."

"Well." The god clapped his hands lightly, shifting the mood.

"You just officially became a member of the Miach Familia. I think that deserves something better than serious talk."

Issei blinked, confused.

"Lunch should already be ready."

Miach smiled openly.

"Come eat with us before you head to the Guild to update your status."

"I… accept. Happily."

And so, lunch passed in a simple, calm way. A pleasant silence filled the room—comfortable for everyone.

After the meal, Issei organized his belongings, wrapped the red scarf around his neck, and adjusted the backpack on his shoulders.

"I'm going to the Guild now to update my status and gather information about the Dungeon."

He gave a light bow.

"I'll be back before nightfall."

"Take it easy," Miach said with a small smile.

"The Dungeon isn't going anywhere."

Naaza simply nodded in silence.

Issei stepped out of the Blue Pharmacy, closing the door behind him as the bell rang softly.

Plim.

In front of the Guild…

"You did WHAT?!!"

At the receptionist's shocked shout, countless eyes turned toward the pink-haired girl. Some adventurers—and even other receptionists—stopped what they were doing.

"Misha-san… you're speaking way too loudly…"

Issei said in a low voice, visibly annoyed by the sudden attention.

"Ah… sorry."

She stuck out her tongue and winked, like she hadn't just caused a small commotion.

"Let's go to a booth," she continued.

"I'll register you privately as an apology. And, of course, we're going to have a serious talk."

She crossed her arms.

"I'll also explain how the upper floors of the Dungeon work."

"Thanks…"

A few minutes later—

"Alright, registered."

"Now seriously… you joined the Miach Familia—are you insane?! Their debt is ridiculous, basically impossible for beginner adventurers to repay!"

"Misha-san, I understand your concern."

Issei answered calmly.

"But I'm aware of everything involving the Miach Familia. Miach-sama himself explained it all to me."

"Moo… fine."

She sighed, shaking her head.

"Just don't come crying to this Onee-san later."

She waved him off.

"Now shoo, shoo. I've got work to do."

With that settled at the Guild, Issei left the building and headed toward Babel Tower, where the Dungeon entrance was located.

According to Misha, the upper floors were ideal for beginner adventurers—covering floors 1 through 12.

From the 1st to the 4th floor, the walls were a pale blue, and the monsters that spawned were mostly goblins and kobolds. On the 1st floor there was a wide corridor known as the Beginner's Path, where novice adventurers often trained. Normally, level 1 adventurers with abilities between I and H spent a lot of time there.

Misha had been clear: he was forbidden from going past the 4th floor. From there, monsters like War Shadows and Killer Ants became common, and beginner deaths were not rare. Not to mention Infant Dragons on floors 10 to 12…

At the name, Issei frowned. A silent hatred began to rise.

Misha hadn't bothered explaining the middle and lower floors. That information wouldn't be useful now. When he got stronger, she'd explain.

"So… this is the Beginner's Path…" he murmured.

Issei took a few steps forward, feeling the air change subtly. The bluish light reflected off smooth walls, and the echo of footsteps seemed warped—like the space was larger than it looked.

Then a chill ran down his spine.

It wasn't fear.

It was… attention.

Issei stopped for a moment, instinctively bringing a hand to his chest. His heart beat a little faster as an uncomfortable sensation spread through him—like something was assessing him.

"…Am I imagining it?"

He breathed in deeply. The Dungeon wasn't conscious… at least, that was what they said.

Still, somewhere beyond the pale-blue walls, something seemed to be watching him. Not with hostility.

But with cold curiosity.

Interesting…Maybe it's worth testing.But not now.

Issei clenched his fists. 'I can do this.'

He reaffirmed it to himself and took his first step toward the depths.

Crack, crack.

Cracks spread through the wall like veins, and three greenish silhouettes forced their way out of the stone.

Goblins.

Small, with rough skin and yellow eyes, they let out low grunts as they stretched like animals just waking up. Their hands were empty—no weapons, no armor. Still, their sharp teeth and filthy nails were more than enough to injure an unprepared adventurer.

Issei stepped back, instinctively positioning himself in the center of the corridor.

'Three.'

His right hand tightened around the local guard's sword—simple, but well-balanced. In his left, the dagger forged by the craftsmen rested light and familiar.

Steady breathing. Low stance.

He didn't rush in. The goblins advanced first.

The one on the left was faster, shrieking as it leaped at him. Issei twisted his body, barely slipping aside, and answered with a horizontal slash. The blade cut clean through the creature's torso, and the goblin turned to ash before it even hit the ground.

The second didn't give him time to breathe.

It came low, trying to grab his legs. Issei pulled back half a step and drove the dagger down—straight into its skull. There was almost no resistance. Ash scattered across the pale-blue dungeon floor.

The third hesitated.

The goblin's eyes flicked between the remains of its companions, and for a brief second… it retreated.

Issei advanced.

Without allowing the monster to regain initiative, he closed the distance in two quick steps and delivered a direct, precise thrust through its chest. The goblin let out one last guttural sound before dissolving completely.

Silence.

Issei remained still for a few seconds, blades raised, listening.

Nothing.

He exhaled slowly.

'…Different from the forest.'

Not physically stronger—but faster. More aggressive. And strangely coordinated.

"First fight…" he murmured.

His heart was still racing, but his mind was clear. No injuries. No mental strain. No magic spent. He sheathed the sword and gripped the dagger firmly.

'I can handle this.'

But deep down, he knew.

This was only the beginning.

Issei looked at the spot where the goblins had vanished.

No magic stones.

He wasn't surprised. Monsters on the upper floors rarely left anything behind. According to Misha, there was only a small chance of a drop on the 3rd and 4th floors. From the 5th floor onward, it started being worth it—but he was forbidden from going past the 4th.

Pushing those thoughts aside, Issei moved on.

From the first to the second floor, the descent took about thirty minutes.

The path was relatively calm. Only a few unlucky goblins crossed his way, always in small groups, never more than three. Nothing that demanded more than attention and precise strikes.

When he reached the second floor, Issei frowned slightly.

A different silhouette appeared ahead.

"…A kobold."

No time to rest—the kobold attacked first.

Unlike goblins, its stance was lower and more stable. Its long snout wrinkled as it growled, eyes tracking Issei's movements. Muscles tight, ready to spring at the smallest opening.

'Faster…'

Issei adjusted his grip on the sword and shifted his weight back, keeping the dagger ready in a defensive position. He didn't advance.

The kobold moved in a zigzag, testing distance. Then, in an instant, it lunged—aiming low for Issei's legs.

Issei retreated half a step and barely avoided the strike, feeling the rush of its charge skim past his thigh. Without wasting time, he responded with a downward cut.

The kobold twisted, and the blade only caught its shoulder—pulling a sharp, high-pitched snarl from the creature.

It didn't fall. If anything, it became more aggressive.

It lunged again, claws tearing the air in a rapid sequence. Issei stepped back twice, blocking one strike with the sword and evading another with a twist of his torso. The impact made his arms vibrate.

'Stronger than a goblin.'

He forced an opening.

When the kobold committed fully, Issei rotated his left wrist and drove the dagger into its flank—using the monster's own momentum against it. The kobold's body stiffened for a second before dissolving into ash.

Silence again.

Issei stood still, breathing deeply.

The fight had been short… but it demanded more focus.

He slowly relaxed his shoulders.

"Definitely… different."

He moved forward.

Not long after, he heard hurried footsteps and desperate shouts echoing down the corridor.

Two young men ran toward him, panting. Behind them came three goblins and two kobolds—disorganized, but aggressive. One of the boys clutched a bloodied arm, his face twisted in pain.

'This is going to be troublesome…'

Issei adjusted his stance, letting mana flow into his legs—light, accelerated, just enough to push his body.

The moment they crossed into his range, he moved.

One clean, slightly angled slash.

A goblin's head rolled across the floor before the others even understood what happened. The creature turned to ash, and the shock of the scene made the remaining monsters hesitate for a fraction of a second.

It was enough.

Issei twisted and surged forward, driving his sword through the second goblin's chest. The third tried to retreat, but Issei swept its legs with a low kick and finished it with a precise dagger thrust.

Three. Two left.

The kobolds reacted fast.

One of them snarled and charged straight in, while the other tried to circle around Issei's flank. He sensed the danger too late and forced his body backward, barely avoiding a sweeping strike that would have taken his neck.

The first kobold slammed into him, claws slicing the air. Issei blocked with the sword, the impact traveling up to his shoulders. Its strength was greater than the monsters he'd fought before.

'Damn…'

He retreated two steps, using the narrow corridor to his advantage. The second kobold attacked from behind, but Issei pivoted and drove the dagger into its snout. The creature shrieked, then dissolved into ash.

The last kobold didn't hesitate. It lunged with everything it had.

Issei felt the mana in his legs falter for an instant—continuous reinforcement was starting to demand its price. Still, he held his ground. When the monster jumped, Issei lowered his body and swung his sword in a short, violent arc.

The cut cleaved through the creature's abdomen.

Ash.

Silence.

Issei breathed hard, chest rising and falling. His legs burned lightly—a clear warning not to overuse that reinforcement.

Then he turned to the two young men, who stared at him in stunned disbelief.

"Are you injured?" he asked, voice steady.

One of them nodded quickly.

"My arm… it—"

"Press the wound," Issei cut in, already approaching.

"And don't move for now."

He knew. That had been more than normal for the second floor. And if things continued like this… the Dungeon would respond sooner rather than later.

Issei crouched beside them, scanning the surroundings as he spoke.

"It's not deep."

He assessed the cut quickly. Ugly, but clean. Bleeding, but not dangerously.

The other boy glanced at Issei's backpack, hesitant.

"Do you… have a potion?"

Issei paused.

For a moment, the image of the Blue Pharmacy surfaced—shelves too full, bottles that might never sell, and a god who gave help even when he couldn't afford to.

Still, Issei shook his head.

"This doesn't need a potion."

The boy looked surprised.

"Press it for a few minutes," Issei continued, firm.

"When you get out, wash it with clean water and disinfect it. If it starts to fester or bleeds again, then you seek help."

He stood.

"Potions are valuable. Use them when it's truly necessary."

The two exchanged an embarrassed look… then nodded.

"Thank you,"

the injured one said, pressing his arm more carefully.

"If you hadn't shown up…"

"Don't run without looking behind you next time,"

Issei replied, already stepping away.

"And stay on the Beginner's Path. You're not ready to hunt in a group that small."

They nodded again. Issei drew a deep breath and straightened, feeling the weight of the decision—not guilt, but responsibility. Helping didn't mean wasting resources. It meant knowing when to use them.

The mana flow in his legs started to fade, leaving behind an uncomfortable heaviness. Not complete exhaustion, but a clear warning.

'I used more than I planned…'

He looked at the two novices ahead, walking in silence, still processing what had happened.

"We're going back," he said simply. "That's enough for today."

Neither argued. The return was cautious. They avoided unnecessary fights, skirting open areas and staying close to the pale-blue walls of the Beginner's Path. A few monsters appeared at a distance, but vanished before combat became necessary.

Time slipped by. When the light of the surface finally appeared, the familiar noise of the city replaced the muffled echo of the Dungeon. Two hours had passed.

Crossing the gate, the two young men exhaled as if they'd been holding their breath the entire time.

"Thank you… really," one said, giving a small bow.

Issei nodded once. "Rest. Tomorrow, train more before you come back."

They nodded and walked off, speaking quietly to each other. Issei stood for a moment, staring at the Dungeon entrance. His body was tired. His mind remained sharp.

"Definitely… can't let my guard down."

With that, he turned and headed back into the city, already thinking of hot food and a real bed.

In that instant—

A shiver ran through the Dungeon.

It came from nowhere in particular, with no visible cause. Still, adventurers scattered across the upper floors felt the same sudden discomfort, as if something invisible had brushed past them.

A faint sensation. Curious. Almost… playful.

Deep below, beyond stone and darkness, something reacted—like a child who had just found a new toy.

Interesting… Very interesting. Not now. Not yet.

Plim.

"I'm back, Miach-sama! Naaza-san!"

Miach looked up from behind the counter, his face brightening as he recognized the young man.

"Welcome back, Issei-kun."

Behind him, Naaza paused for a moment. Her golden eyes scanned Issei from head to toe, quickly confirming he wasn't injured. Then she gave a small nod.

"Mm."

Short. Precise. But enough.

"So," Miach continued, leaning on the counter, curious. "How was your first exploration of the Dungeon?"

Naaza also seemed attentive, even as she pretended disinterest while arranging bottles.

Issei gave a small smile.

"I'll answer, I promise," he said, slipping the backpack off his shoulders.

"But before that… how about dinner?" He looked at both of them.

"My treat."

Miach blinked, surprised. "Issei-kun, you don't have to—"

"I insist," Issei interrupted, polite but firm.

"Today was a good day. And… I still have some money saved."

Naaza glanced at Miach from the corner of her eye.

"…As long as it's not somewhere expensive."

she muttered. Issei nodded immediately.

"Of course. Nothing extravagant."

Miach chuckled softly.

"In that case… I know a few simple, honest places. Good food, fair prices."

"Perfect," Issei said.

"Then after dinner, I'll tell you everything properly."

For the first time since arriving in Orario, Issei felt something different as he closed the Blue Pharmacy's door.

It wasn't just exhaustion.

It was… belonging.

The food was already on the table when they sat down. Simple, hot, well-seasoned—nothing fancy, but comforting. The kind of place that didn't stand out, frequented by tired adventurers and ordinary workers. Miach spoke first.

"So…" he said, folding his hands on the table.

"How was the Dungeon?"

Issei set down his utensils for a moment.

"I entered through the Beginner's Path," he began calmly.

"I fought some goblins on the first floor and a kobold on the second. Nothing out of the ordinary."

Naaza kept eating, but her ears were attentive.

"After that," Issei continued, "I found two novice adventurers being chased by three goblins and two kobolds. One of them was injured on the arm."

Miach's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"You intervened?"

"Yes," Issei nodded. "I dealt with the monsters and escorted the two back to the surface."

He paused briefly.

"I didn't use a potion."

Silence held for a second.

Naaza spoke first. "…Serious wound?"

"No," Issei replied immediately.

"Superficial cut. It bled, but it was clean. I just told him to apply pressure and disinfect once they were out."

Miach studied him for a moment… then smiled.

"You did well."

Issei blinked, surprised.

"Potions in our Familia aren't infinite,"

Miach continued, voice calm.

"And using them when it isn't necessary doesn't help anyone grow."

Naaza nodded in agreement.

"If it had been serious, you would've used one," she said. "And if it wasn't… they needed to learn."

Issei visibly relaxed. "I was worried I'd made the wrong call."

"There's no perfect decision in the Dungeon," Miach replied.

"There's the decision you can make."

He picked up his utensils again.

"And from what you've told me, you kept a cool head, protected other adventurers, and knew when to retreat."

Naaza shot Issei a brief glance.

"…You came back in one piece. That already says a lot."

Issei smiled faintly. "I used a bit of magic to reinforce my body,"

he admitted. "I didn't manage my mind properly."

Miach nodded, serious now. "That's something we'll work on over time."

The mood at the table softened. Between bites, Issei felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Safety.

"Well…"

He cleared his throat lightly.

"How was your day, Miach-sama, Naaza-san—"

"Issei-kun," Miach interrupted with a smile. "You can call her just Naaza."

Issei froze. "Huh? I can?"

Naaza let out a low sigh. Without moving much, she simply looked away and rested her good elbow on the table.

"…You already went into the Dungeon today," she said flatly.

"I guess that counts."

"I-I see…" Issei swallowed. "Naaza."

"Mm." Her tail flicked lightly behind the chair.

"Well," Miach continued as if nothing happened, "our day was—" and he began to tell them.

[Blue Pharmacy – Night]

When they left the restaurant, Orario's sky was already dark. Streetlights lit their path as the city slipped into its nighttime rhythm. It had to be around eight by the time they returned to the Blue Pharmacy.

Plim.

Miach unlocked the door and entered first.

"Come," he said, turning to Issei. "I'll show you your room."

They went upstairs. The hallway was simple, wooden doors lined on both sides.

"Here." Miach stopped in front of one. "This will be your room."

He opened it—revealing a modest but clean space. A simple bed, a small table, a chair, and an empty shelf. Nothing beyond the essentials.

"It's more than enough," Issei said sincerely.

Miach smiled. "Make yourself at home."

After they parted, Issei dropped his backpack and spent a few minutes arranging what little he had. He folded his clothes, kept the sword and dagger within reach, then sat on the bed for a moment.

Fatigue finally began to catch up to him.

Still—

He stood. A few minutes later, he found Miach downstairs.

"Miach-sama," he said respectfully.

"May I ask something?"

"Of course."

"I'd like to update my status."

Issei took a deep breath. "I want to know… how much I grew today."

Miach looked at him for a moment, thoughtful.

"Normally, adventurers do that after weeks… sometimes months," he said.

"But I understand why." He smiled gently. "Come."

Issei removed his shirt and knelt, exposing his back.

Miach let a drop of blood fall and closed his eyes, reading the numbers that formed. The silence lasted a few moments.

"Hm…"

Issei held his breath.

"It's nothing spectacular,"

Miach said at last. "But… for a first day?"

He smiled genuinely. "You grew."
