Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR-The Things Amara Stopped Asking For

Amara stopped asking for small things first.

She stopped asking him to walk her to the gate.

Stopped asking him to listen without multitasking.

Stopped asking him to notice when she was hurting.

Each time she swallowed a request, something inside her grew quieter.

Zainab noticed.

"You're shrinking," Zainab said one afternoon over coffee.

"I'm not," Amara replied automatically.

Zainab raised an eyebrow. "You don't fight for space anymore."

Amara stirred her drink. "I'm tired of explaining myself."

Zainab leaned forward. "Love shouldn't make you smaller."

Amara smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes.

That night, lying beside Daniel, she wondered when she'd started feeling like a guest in her own relationship.
