Chapter 25 - Intermission 1: Green Fields

A halfling goddess with a matron-like countenance was standing above a viewing pool, a frown on her face. She was wearing green robes and a yellow cloak, and she wielded a shield with an icon of a Cornucopia was on her hand.

The viewing pool was focused on a raven-haired halfling with a round child-like face, celebrating another victory over a dangerous foe, this time a servant of the god Cyric. Cyric was the god of trickery, lies and strife, yet his servant was bested through trickery and cunning.

"You do not approve, sister?" came a familiar voice. Shadows did exist here in the Green Fields, on the third layer of Mount Celestia, home of the good and lawful gods and goddesses. Indeed, the realm of Green Fields had cycles of day and night, somehow, in spite of the plane being an actual mountain rather than a planet spinning in front of a star. But it was from the shadow of the matron goddess herself that the dark goddess stepped out of, with a smug look on her face.

The matron goddess did not bother to turn to address the voice. "His methods are yours, not mine."

"Yet, my methods are the greatest ally of the humble halflings, whom we are bound to protect," the dark goddess replied, bowing in mock reverence. "It is for this reason I exist, after all."

Indeed, because of the very nature of the darker goddess, she didn't belong in Mount Celestia, a plane of law and good. Arguably, the dark halfling goddess didn't belong anywhere in the whole multiverse. So shrouded in shadows is the dark halfling goddess that her entire existence is disputable. This very conversation the matron goddess was having with her dark sister may not be actually happening.

Such is the nature of gods and goddesses. A single deity may have many aspects, and the relationship between a deity's different aspects was difficult to grasp for mortal minds. Selune, goddess of the moon and patron of the moon, stars, navigation, navigators, wanderers, questers, seekers, and non-evil lycanthropes, had three avatars forms as well as an aspect, none other than Sehanine Moonbow of the elves, somehow. It's a confusing mess even for the gods.

The matron goddess shook her head and pointed at the raven-haired halfling. "Not this one. This one does not fall under our protection."

The dark goddess's smile faltered. "That cannot be so. We are the protector of all halflings. Even the most wicked and cruel."

The matron goddess smiled. It wasn't a happy smile. "That is true. Yet we cannot claim this one. His very essence belongs to another. Even if he were to worship us, or any other of the halfling pantheon, we cannot claim him when his time comes."

"But we are personally responsible for this one! This very specific mortal, we brought him to Toril!" the dark goddess protested. "This is not a matter of jurisdiction any more. It is our duty!"

"Hardly seems fair, does it? This Sonny, he can do everything right, become a saint that rocks the very foundation of the world. Yet his soul is doomed. In the end, only eternal damnation awaits him. Or worse," the matron goddess said, sighing. "It is what it is. Even gods have limits."

The dark goddess stared at the matron. "I refuse to give up on him. I will find a way. Or he will."

The matron smiled, a sad smile. "Yes, you do that. As you said, that is the reason you exist, after all. Those who I cannot protect, that is where you must step in."

The dark goddess smiled. "Well said. And so I shall."

The dark halfling goddess stepped back into the shadow of the matron. She had never existed, and this conversation never happened.
