The change appeared without notice.
Kairav was reviewing his movement request at the public slate when a new line settled beneath his classification. It did not flash. It did not demand acknowledgment. It simply occupied space that had not been there before.
Interaction Cluster: Review Tier 1
He read it twice.
The clerk beside him continued filing approvals, voice low, posture relaxed.
"What does this code indicate?" Kairav asked.
The clerk glanced at the slate. "Pattern monitoring," they said. "Repeated procedural intersections between files."
"Is it disciplinary?"
"No."
The clerk stamped a document and slid it forward.
"It tracks influence pathways," they added. "Standard at this tier."
Kairav nodded.
Later, near the inner routing counter, he saw the aide's slate reflect the same line for a moment before the screen dimmed.
Neither of them spoke.
The desk between them felt longer than before, though its edges had not moved.
A supervisor passed, reviewing entries on a portable device. Their gaze lingered briefly on the aide's queue, then shifted to Kairav's position across the hall.
Not suspicion.
Alignment check.
Kairav stepped back from the counter, giving space where none had been asked for.
Before, interactions had been events.
Now, they were structures.
He understood the implication.
If he acted, the effect would not end at his file. The system would trace outward along the lines already drawn.
Proximity had become a variable.
At the exit, his pass scanned with a softer tone than usual, followed by a secondary confirmation.
Approved.
But noted.
Outside, people crossed the square in ordinary paths, unaware of the invisible geometry shaping which lines mattered.
Kairav paused on the steps.
The aide exited moments later, adjusting the strap of their satchel without looking in his direction. Not avoidance.
Calculation.
They walked past each other with a measured distance that neither had practiced, yet both understood.
The system had not warned them.
It had drawn a circle.
And written their names inside it.
