Chapter 28 - Chapter 13: The Razor’s Edge

The Iron Peaks were aptly named. The mountains didn't have slopes; they had blades. The rock was infused with raw magnetite, making the air taste like pennies and causing the compass in Zayn's mental HUD to spin in frantic, useless circles.

Zayn climbed with a grim, mechanical efficiency. Every time he slammed his obsidian-coated knuckles into the cliffside, the rock didn't just crack—it hummed. The green life-force he'd absorbed from the Siphon was acting like a stabilizer, turning his jagged Rage into something more focused. Something heavier.

"You're over-gripping," Liora called out from below. She moved up the near-vertical face with the ease of a mountain goat, her staff finding handholds that didn't seem to exist. "The mountain isn't your enemy, Zayn. It's your skeleton. Stop trying to crush it and start trying to join it."

"Hard to 'join' something that's trying to freeze my blood," Zayn grunted, pulling himself onto a narrow ledge.

His breath came in ragged plumes of white. At this altitude, the heat of his Internal Burn was the only thing keeping his lungs from crystallizing.

"They're close," Liora said, her head tilting toward the grey clouds above. "I can hear the wind whistling through their silks. Three of them. High-velocity signatures."

Zayn didn't look up. He closed his eyes and let his Spatial Map ripple outward.

Pulse. Pulse. Ping.

There. Three silhouettes, shaped like jagged wings, were diving through the mist. They weren't using Cloud-Galleons. These were Sky-Stalkers—elite interceptors from the Pale Moon Sect who wore mechanical wing-suits powered by Spirit-Jade.

"They found the beacon," Zayn whispered, his obsidian knuckles beginning to glow with a dull, subterranean red. "Liora, get behind the ridge. These aren't scouts."

[WARNING: HIGH-VELOCITY AERIAL STRIKE IMMINENT]

[THREAT DETECTED: MOON-HUNTER INTERCEPTORS (LVL 34)]

The first Sky-Stalker hit the ledge like a thunderbolt.

He didn't land; he transitioned from flight to a spinning kick that carried the momentum of a five-hundred-foot drop. Zayn raised his arms, the obsidian knuckles absorbing the impact with a sound like a sledgehammer hitting an anvil.

The shockwave cracked the ledge. Zayn slid back, his boots throwing up sparks against the magnetite rock.

"Target identified," the Stalker hissed. His voice was metallic, filtered through a hawk-like mask. "The Seed is active. Initiate 'Containment Protocol Gamma.'"

The other two Stalkers pulled out "Gravity-Nets"—shimmering webs of purple energy designed to pin a target to the ground. They threw them in a synchronized arc, the nets expanding to cover the entire ledge.

"Containment?" Zayn growled, his amber eyes flaring. "You're a bit late for that."

Zayn didn't dodge the nets. He dropped into a deep stance and slammed his right fist into the mountain face.

[TECHNIQUE: MANTLE FLOW – IRON RIPPLE]

He didn't just vibrate the rock. He used the magnetic properties of the Iron Peaks against them. He sent a massive surge of Stage 2 heat into the magnetite.

The mountain didn't just break—it polarized.

A massive, invisible magnetic pulse erupted from the cliffside. The Gravity-Nets, made of pure energy, were torn apart by the sudden shift in the local field. The two Stalkers in the air screamed as their mechanical wing-suits glitched, the Spirit-Jade cores inside them vibrating at a fatal frequency.

"What... what did you do?" the leader on the ledge gasped, his wings twitching uncontrollably.

"I asked the mountain for a favor," Zayn said.

He moved. He wasn't a "current" anymore; he was a catapult. He closed the distance in a single stride, his obsidian fist connecting with the Stalker's chest.

[TECHNIQUE: POINT-RESONANCE – KINETIC OVERLOAD]

The hit didn't just break the Stalker's ribs. It sent a vibration through his wing-suit that caused the pressurized Spirit-Jade to detonate.

The explosion was contained within a three-foot radius—a surgical burst of blue fire that vaporized the Stalker's torso while leaving the ledge intact.

The other two Stalkers, struggling to regain flight, watched in horror as their leader's boots fell into the abyss below.

"He's... he's not a Tier-1 anymore," one of them radioed, his voice trembling. "The Seed has evolved! Requesting Elder-level intervention! Requesting—"

Zayn reached out toward the air. He didn't have a ranged attack, but he had the Weight. He focused on the magnetite dust floating in the air and the metal in the Stalkers' suits.

[NEW TECHNIQUE UNLOCKED: GEOMAGNETIC GRASP]

He closed his fist.

The two Stalkers were violently jerked toward each other as if pulled by a giant magnet. They collided in mid-air with a sickening crunch of metal and bone. Zayn didn't let go. He slammed his fist downward, and the two hunters were dragged out of the sky, crashing into the jagged peaks below.

[LEVEL UP: 31 -> 32]

[GEOMAGNETIC GRASP: STAGE 1 (MANTLE-LINKED)]

Silence returned to the peaks, save for the whistling wind. Zayn stood on the ledge, his obsidian knuckles pulsing with a hungry, dark-green light. He felt stronger, but he also felt the weight of the mountain pressing down on his soul.

"Elder-level intervention," Liora said, stepping out from the shadows. Her face was grim. "Do you know what that means, Zayn?"

"It means they're sending someone who can actually fight," Zayn said, looking toward the horizon.

Beyond the Iron Peaks, the sky turned from grey to a bruised, sickly purple. The air grew dry, and the green life-force in his knuckles began to flicker as if it were afraid.

"The Ash-Wastes," Zayn whispered.

"The graveyard of the world," Liora agreed. "The High Sects can't track you there, but neither can the Earth. You'll be on your own, Zayn. No planet to back you up. Just the Void and whatever is left of your Rage."

Zayn looked at his hands—the black knuckles, the glowing veins. He wasn't a boy from Oakhaven anymore. He was a weapon that was starting to enjoy the war.

"Good," Zayn said. "I'm tired of sharing."
