Let's start this off by giving myself an introduction, everyone calls me Meliodas I stand at 6 ft and I'm all solid muscle, I would have to be for carrying and wearing all this armor and this heavy ass sword. Today is going to be a heavy battle, later to be known as The Battle of Camlann. I am on King Arthur's side, we all have a mass respect for our King and I have fought with him for all 11 other battles so far.
I close my eyes, readying myself for the day to come, as I exit my chambers, my armor clanking together with every move I make, I head out of my tent to walk towards my horse. He's been a good stead, has never failed me. His jet black coat shines as the sun reflects off him. I put my sword into the saddles sheath and pet him a bit as I continue to ready myself.
"You ready old man?" I say to him as I climb onto his back, already saddled and ready for battle. He huffs in response,
"I'll take that as a yes." I say back to him as I put on my helmet. I kick my feet slightly as he trots forward to the front of the line everyone in the army has gathered, King Arthur himself is even here to help with the fight. As I take my spot next to Arthur, he turns his head to me.
"Meliodas. I'm glad to have my most trusted soldier by my side to protect me." He says quietly as I take off my helmet.
"I imagine, fighting your own nephew hasn't been easy on you, we will come victorious." I state confidently
"I have no doubts, but at what cost Meliodas? Their lives? Yours?" He gestures around him then points to me, I sigh.
"If that is fate, so be it." I state, he chuckles.
"Thank you Meliodas… for everything." He whispers, I nod slightly, we both put on our helmets as he urges his horse forward.
"Men! Today we fight! Today we win! March with me and we will be victorious!" He yells, the soldiers cheer, as he turns his horse and urges it forward, we follow behind him, as I follow beside him.
"Arthur what do you think will come of this?" I asked suddenly
"Well if my nephew Mordred wasnt so rebellious, we wouldnt be having this fight," he started "I think the battle itself will come out victorious, but at a great cost for a lot of great men, a lot of families will lose their husbands, brothers, sons. That will be our loss, losing great men for a batle that didnt need to happen." He continued, I looked out in front to see the men in front and looked behind me as far as I could in my armor, attempting to see the sea of men following behind us,
The king is right, it's saddening to know that this will be the last time these men will be alive, some if not all of these men will never see their loved ones again. I thought to myself.
This might be the last time I'M alive. I continued to think about the events that today might bring for us.
"You're thinking too hard Meliodas." Arthur said suddenly, bringing me out of my thoughts. I gave a dry chuckle.
"I apologize my king, I'm just thinking about my life back home. I have nothing to lose, no family, no wife, no kids. Other than my life, I've got nothing to lose." I explained.
"You're life is the most important thing Meliodas, as long as you try to keep that; you're doing ok." Arthur replied, I shook my head and sighed.
"You're life is more important, Arthur. Im here to help keep you alive, to protect you. As long as I succeed in that, I have fulfilled my mission in life. I have kept you alive in every other battle so far, so won't be any different this time around." I explained, and I was correct, out of the 11 other battles so far, I had done my job to make sure the king cane out alive with minimal to no injuries. This filled me with pride, I'm sure that if it were anyone else but me, he wouldnt have made it af far as he has.
"Meliodas, I want to thank you. If it weren't for you, I probably wouldn't be alive right now. From the moment we met when we were kids, I know you were the right choice to have as my right hand man to help me run my army." He said, his sincere tone had pulled at my heart and made it swell with love. I loved the king like he was a brother, we had met as children; I was an orphan and walking through the streets of Camelot. I was trying to steal my next meal when he walked up to me, my whole being filled with fear as I had thought he had caught me stealing and I hadn't realized. Arthur had scrutinized me, looking me over, I inwardly cowered away from him.
"Mom, let's help him." He ordered his mother, as she looked me over in my tattered dirty rags, her eyes held kindess and sympathy.
"Well, aren't you just the smallest thing." She had said sweetly, she was right, I was smaller than Arthur at that point. In both wieght and height, the lack of food had played a huge part in ny lack of growth. She held out her hand to me, I took it cautiously; and she led us to the palace where she helped me bathe, gave me some of arthurs clothes for now and fed me to my hearts desire.
I had stayed by Arthur's side since then, I had promised the queen that I would do my best and give my all to protect him. I had held and kept my promise religiously to her, he had lived every single battle and I took the brunt if whatever opponent had tried to kill the king. Even from our own people, there had been no doubt that, like the great kings and queens before had also faced the hardships of betrayal from their own people. It was difficult to know when the next person would snap and attempt to kill them.
"I should be thanking you Arthur. If it weren't for you I probably would have died an orphan in the streets of Camelot. No one would have noticed, no one did notice, until you came along." I remembered, the king gave a hesrtfelt chuckle.
"Anything for my brother." He replied, and I nodded agreeing with him, I was the only one able to call him only by his name.
"My king, we're almost there! Shall I send a scout?" A solider cam up and asked, interrupting our trip down memory lane.
"What do you think Meliodas?" Arthur asked, genuinely curious on mh answer.
"No. It would give us away, yes they wouldn't know how far away we are, but they would assume we are close, I say we surprise them." I explained. Arthur nodded.
"You heard him, do not send a scout. We keep moving forward!" Arthur ordered, the solider gave a quick yes your highness before riding back towards his part of the march that he came from.
We fight today, I'm ready for this fight, I'm ready for whatever outcome may happen to me but no matter what the king will survive this! He will live, Arthur must live, he is the greatest king to have ever ruled!
"LONG LIVE KING ARTHUR!" I shouted, the men repeated after me, Arthur chuckled.
"Only you would Meliodas. Only you." We laughed as he spoke.
Long live king Arthur. I repeated to myself.
