Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: Unbearable Memories

Looking at the two old men who were staring at him with piercing eyes, Guan Xing couldn't help but sigh. It seemed there was no longer any need to hide the truth.

He spoke gently, "I think someone has called me that before. Honestly, I'm just an ordinary doctor. Those Westerners, with their narrow view, have never experienced the wonders of the East. They're simply ignorant."

Guan Xing's modest response didn't seem to satisfy the two elders. Huang Lao paused for a moment, then spoke with an air of superiority, "Dr. Guan, you don't need to be so humble. To be called the 'Oriental Divine Hand' and be recognized by foreigners is no small feat. Sigh, after all we've done to help you, you still aren't showing enough loyalty."

His words made Guan Xing feel embarrassed, as though they were implying some sort of conspiracy.

The old院长 (Dean) eagerly interjected, "Huang Lao, hold on for a moment. Guan Xing, tell us about those three heart surgeries you performed. You completed them in just two hours, and it stunned the entire medical world. I've always been curious about how you did it."

Huang Lao, being the senior of the two, looked at Guan Xing with an expectant gaze as well. It was clear that he was just as eager to know the details of that world-shaking surgery.

Guan Xing's eyes carried a deep, lingering look as he recalled that fateful day. It had been three years ago, the moment that made him famous. But now, reflecting on it, he realized it had also been a moment filled with a certain element of luck.

Unable to bear their hopeful expressions, he began to explain, "In reality, the surgeries weren't all that different. The conditions were limited, and there was no time for proper diagnosis on those three patients. I had to adjust things while operating. The patients were on the brink of death, and I didn't have time to think too much about it."

Seeing the confusion in their eyes, Guan Xing chuckled and added, "The patients were important people—dozens of guns were pointed at me. If even one of them had died, I probably wouldn't have made it out alive. You see, I had no choice but to give my all."

As he reminisced about the days when he had just arrived on Paradise Island, he recalled how his life back then was not much better than that of a beggar. It was during those days that he had grown the most.

Five years had passed in the blink of an eye, and now thinking back, those memories were hard to face.

Guan Xing proceeded to recount every detail of the surgery, explaining how the entire process unfolded. Despite his calm tone, the story itself was nothing short of a medical miracle. As he described the tense moments near the end, both the old院长 and Huang Lao couldn't sit still anymore. They stood up, closing in on him to make sure they didn't miss a single detail.

"Dr. Guan, you're truly a genius," the old院长 exclaimed. "To be honest, if I had been the one to perform those surgeries, I'd be lucky to save even one patient."

Huang Lao also remained silent for a long time before asking, "Dr. Guan, with your exceptional medical skills, why did you end up at Feiyang Medical Center?"

The院长 joined in, his eyes gleaming mischievously. "I've heard that Feiyang has quite a few beautiful women. Could it be that Dr. Guan—"

Before he could finish, Huang Lao nodded approvingly. "Yes, yes, young people are naturally fond of romance. There's nothing wrong with that. I too wanted to enjoy my youth, but unfortunately, no one looked at me back then."

Their playful banter made Guan Xing smile despite himself. He hadn't expected these two elderly men to be so humorous. Spending time with them, he felt that there was no generation gap between them at all.

"Alright, Dr. Guan," the old院长 said after the laughter died down, "We didn't call you here just out of curiosity. We also have something we need to discuss with you."

Guan Xing nodded. "I understand. I'm grateful for all that you've done for me. Actually, I've come back just to find a place to rest. But yes, the beauties at Feiyang Medical Center are indeed a beautiful sight. I'm glad I chose the right place."

He smiled, then added, "What is it you need to discuss,院长?"

Having developed a deep respect for these two elderly men, Guan Xing truly saw them as his elders. Their care and concern for him were sincere, and he appreciated it.

"Do you remember when the Health Ministry revoked your medical license?" the old院长 asked, turning serious. "We plan to make things difficult for them this time. They really need to be taught a lesson."

Guan Xing's heart skipped a beat. "The Health Ministry? Are you sure the information you have is correct, Huang Lao?"

Huang Lao didn't ask for confirmation but answered, "Yes, I've checked through some connections in the Health Ministry. This investigation is specifically targeting you. They've been bribed to come after you. This shouldn't be happening—after all, you only just returned to China a few months ago. What did you do to upset them?"

The old院长 raised his eyebrows. "Wait a minute, Guan Xing, are you related to the Guans of the Huaxia Group?"

The question caught Guan Xing off guard. He fell silent for a moment. So, the Huaxia Group had already discovered his identity? Instead of reaching out to him, they had chosen to undermine him and force him into a corner. Had it really been five years, and they still couldn't let their guard down?

But Guan Xing didn't explain. He simply nodded, his expression unreadable. "Thank you for the heads-up, but don't worry about it. I'll take care of it. As for the research meeting, just let me know when you need me, and I'll be there."

The two elders could sense Guan Xing's distracted state, so they didn't press any further. After chatting for a bit longer, Guan Xing excused himself.

As he left, he couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. This was the greatest pain he had been avoiding for years. No matter how much he tried to run, the pressure from his family never lessened—in fact, it only grew stronger as time passed.

Yes, he was part of the Huaxia Guan family.

Thanks to his ancestors' reputation and two family heirlooms, The Divine Healer's Record and The Guan Family Martial Sage's Legacy, the Guan family had slowly transformed from an ancient family into a powerful pharmaceutical conglomerate, eventually growing into a massive corporation. The story of their rise could only be described as miraculous.

If China were to select the top ten most renowned doctors, the Guan family would occupy at least half of the spots, from the patriarch Guan Fengyu to his father's three brothers—Guan Yulou, Guan Yuting, and Guan Yuxia—all of them were legendary healers. Even Guan Xing's cousins and siblings were skilled in medicine.

But sadly, only Guan Xing had the ability to merge the Guan family's martial arts with medicine.

His father, Guan Yuxia, was the youngest of the three brothers, humble and honest, never vying for power or fortune. Guan Xing's exceptional talent earned him the favor of the patriarch, and five years ago, when Guan Xing had left in anger, it was because the patriarch had intended to pass control of the Huaxia Group to him, sparking envy in many family members.

Looking at his increasingly silent father, Guan Xing felt a deep sympathy but chose to step back. If he hadn't made that decision to leave, he might have ended up as a materialistic businessman, rather than a divine doctor.

In truth, his father understood the situation. As the family's interests grew, the foundation of their medical roots was slowly being abandoned. Many of his cousins, once dedicated to medicine, now focused on amassing wealth. Even his two uncles had begun to harbor ambitions.

He knew the truth, but some things weren't easily changed. So, he turned a blind eye to it. Over the last five years, the Huaxia Group had been slowly declining, once the top group in Beijing, now struggling to maintain its place in the top ten. If it weren't for the Huaxia Group's deep pockets, it might have already been on the brink of collapse.

Guan Xing felt a sense of loss in his heart. He didn't want to fight for anything. While the Huaxia Group was massive, with so many cousins and relatives fighting for their share, the wealth they could give him might not even be more than what he earned working as a doctor on Paradise Island.

From the bottom of his heart, he didn't want to be part of a family feud that had lost its sense of familial love.

Those who knew his whereabouts were certainly not his father, otherwise, they would have reached out to him long ago. It had been five years since he had last stepped foot in the family home. The only connection he had was a call every three months. His mother's loving but lonely voice always masked her longing, but for them, knowing their son was doing well was enough.

This was his lifelong regret.
