Chapter 36 - 34 Meeting the ghost

FENG LANG

My jaw twitched as I watched the distorted video playback on Ruiqing's phone. This had to be a joke. A rumble built up in my chest. The more I watched the video, the more I wanted to break something. With a huff, I tossed the phone into the air, catching Ruiqing by surprise. Luckily, for him, he caught it before it landed on the floor, throwing me a disapproving look. I rolled my eyes.

I shoved my hands into my pocket. "What's the meaning of this?" I breathed out. It was obvious what it was, but I had to hear it.

"What it means, Lang," he pocketed his phone " is that we've arrived at a dead end." I nodded.

"I see. The DNA sample?" He couldn't possibly tell me the DNA didn't give him anything.

He leaned on one of the bikes behind him. "You won't believe it." I scoffed.

"Try me."

With a shrug, he replied. "The person doesn't exist." I blinked, waiting for the real answer, and frowned when he blinked back at me.

"What?"

"Exactly what I said. Whoever it was, they don't exist."

I calmly walked towards one of the poles holding up the tent we were under. Not taking my eyes off it, I spoke, "So we're searching for a ghost?"

"According to the results…" He answered. I traced my hand on the metal pole, how hard would I have to squeeze to tear it down? "There are bikes under the tent, Lang..." He interrupted my thoughts, and I immediately let go. Whipping around to face him.

"Ruiqing," I started with a chuckle. "You're telling me I fucked a ghost…"

He rolled his eyes at me. "Don't play dumb, Lang."

I cocked my head at him. "Are you sure you're cut out for this detective thing? From what I've seen of your abilities, maybe it wasn't a

smart choice fighting your family for this job… I should've let my men handle it."

"Fuck you"

"Tch, don't flatter yourself." I looked around me, taking a breath to tone down the noise around me. These abilities could be both a curse and a blessing. It was usually the latter, so I didn't mind. I turned my nose at the pathetic excuse of a bike show that had just started about two hundred meters from where I stood. "Pathetic."

Ruiqing's brow quirked, immediately following what I was talking about. "He asked you to organize it, and you declined. Don't get cranky now." I rolled my eyes.

"So what now?" I asked, taking us back to our initial conversation. "Are you going to let me do it my way? Or you still insist on being

law abiding." I was starting to get impatient, waiting around while Ruiqing played around with his color-coded case files and whatnots. My men would've had the fucker in a matter of minutes.

"I can't let you do that, Lang. Your way usually involves several counts of aggravated assault, which we can't convict you of in court, because unfortunately for the world, pricks like you happen to have armies of steeled lawyers at your beck and call."

"A simple 'No' would suffice."

"No." He barked out.

"Ruiqing, this is my life." I growled out, but the bastard only lifted a brow at me.

"And you've cared about it since when?" He asked, and I released a frustrated breath. What, a person can't suddenly want to live

anymore? My words caught in my throat when his phone dinged, and he took it out

of his pocket to check the notification. "Long said he's almost here."

I groaned. "Always one disaster after the other…" I muttered. "I'm giving you two more days, just two. I better receive a call from

you on Monday. And make sure it's something better than this ghost story."

He sighed, rolling his eyes. "It's useless talking to you. I'm going to find Yichen." With that, he jogged off. I watched him disappear

into the crowd.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

I frowned. My hand immediately went to my chest, which was thumping loudly in my ears. Not this again. Where did Ruiqing go?

"An M-spec? Lang's in for a surprise." My brows shot up. That was Ruiqing's voice. What surprise was he talking about?

"Where did you find him?" Yichen. My eyes scoured through the crowd, trying to find out where their voices were coming from. Bodies bumped into me as I shouldered through, most of which I shoved out of my way.

"I have my ways" Long was also there. Wherever they were. I groaned as the thumping got louder in my ears, a heavy pressure pushing on my chest. Just then,

I froze. Lavender.

The scent was something else. It was too profound to ignore. It was not a fluke this time. I was sure of it. The way my skin prickled, and how every part of me screamed for me to follow—not that I wouldn't have done so otherwise.

My eyes were blade-sharp now. If the fucker came all the way here, it only meant he knew I was going to be here. He was here to taunt me. I wasn't going to let them slip away.

"You sneaky bastard… Trying hard to get in his good graces, I see." Their voices got louder as I followed the scent. Had Ruiqing

already found the bastard?

"Guess I'm better at your job than you are, detective." My head snapped to the left. Then to the right. Bingo. I zeroed in on what I was looking for. The unmistakable streaks of white hair. Immediately, my heart stopped thumping.

Everybody else blended into the background, except for one. One A-Gen M-Omega. I staggered for a second. It was a male? The universe must be fucking with me. There was no way I fucking had sex with a male— Just then he turned, and I caught a glimpse of those purple eyes… Well fuck me. I did have

sex with a man. I wasn't going to hear the last of it from Ruiqing. I'd deal with that later. For now, I had other things to deal with.

"But where is Lang?… I was with him just a few seconds ago." Speak of the devil… It was

moments like this that I loved being me. Before my mind registered it, my legs were

already moving. Long stepped aside when he saw me approaching, mere seconds before

I rammed into my unsuspecting target. I smirked when I felt the slender neck in my hands, and when the tent's pole shook from the force of collision, chef's kiss.

I breathed out a ragged breath, both from relief and excitement. Oh, I couldn't wait to dish out my sentence. It was going to be glorious. I brought my nose down to his neck, where a very familiar necklace clung, ignoring the confusion in his eyes. I took a big whiff, my chest rumbling from the intoxicating scent. It was a match.

It only felt right that I acknowledged him. Parting my lips, I whispered. "We meet again."
