Chapter 3 - We did our best...

Seeing Alex standing with Cyndi leeched on him tightly as though her life depended on that, he was disappointed.

As a married man, courtesy demands he has to keep his distance from other women, but a look at their closeness made his stomach churn with disgust.

More so, the fact that he was still unmoved by the situation at hand left him reeling with anger he had no place to vent.

Years of working in emergency wards had trained him to maintain composure in the face of grief, hysteria, and despair, but the sight before him made his blood boil in a way he had not anticipated.

Doctor Kelvin stared at Alex for a long moment, his gaze cold, sharp, and edged with a restrained fury that simmered just beneath the surface.

If for anything, he wished as much as to punch this man hard on the face to knock some sense into him and wake him up to reality.

To ask what he was thinking when he let a woman cling tightly on his arms yet his wife was on her way to the great beyond.

If he so much likes the girl clinging to him so much why bother coming over to the hospital.

Why bother standing here as though it matters.

Shouldn't it be much easier to divorce her if he had no affection for her rather than make it complicated and ugly.

But no, it wasn't worth it. He schooled his temper, deciding to focus on the matter at hand. With this resolve, he clenched his fist tightly by his side.

With everything he had witnessed, it still marvels him why Sonia didn't leave this man earlier before her demise.

More confusing was why she had surrendered her life into the hands of such a worthless man.

He had always thought…he would treat her right, he would love her, he would protect her, but who would have thought…she wasn't given a chance to live.

Just because of a mistress.

The thought left a bitter taste in Kelvin's mouth.

His lips parted, and when he spoke, his voice filtered through the space calm and emotionless, betraying none of the turmoil raging within him.

"Mr. Hort, we are sorry…"

Alex's heart slammed against his chest furiously, his frame swayed gently as his heart constricted with pain.

His hand flew to his chest. "It hurts, it really hurts." He mumbled inaudibly.

Kelvin's brow furrowed as he suppressed a scoff. He had always witnessed ladies being dramatic but never thought that men are more dramatic.

Cyndi watched him confused why he was reacting so strongly when he should be feeling relief.

At least this time there would be no argument about handing out the divorce papers, the delays are all gone and even the compulsory pay of alimony.

With no child in between there would be no need to fight for any custody and that makes everything perfect.

Kevin shook his head lightly and continued, "...we did our best." he concluded, his expression was impassive but his heart trembled slightly from the pain and the hurt.

He turned around to leave but Alex's hoarse voice halted him. "Can I see her one last time?"

Kevin's brow furrowed. "But you were with her when she had an episode and then…"

Alex swallowed hard and had his head lowered. He felt guilty, he felt ashamed at this moment.

He really couldn't fathom the reason why he had all these feelings clawing his chest when he should have felt relieved.

He couldn't bring himself to tell anyone he had been there but was busy pacifying Cyndi that he couldn't get a look at her.

He couldn't bring it to himself to admit that every time he visits, it had always been out of routine to avoid the judgmental stares of the public.

To keep up the image of a good husband he had worked hard to maintain over the years. Though the society did not actually know about this truth, he wasn't ready to leave a handle.

But this time he desires to see her with all sincerity.

Cyndi tugged at his sleeve, "Alex, you let her go…seeing her might make it more painful for you."

Kelvin stood for a while watching the scene unfold, his lips curled into a cold sneer. "Mr Alex, I guess your mistress is right." his said icily…you wouldn't want the emotional burden."

Alex's gaze snapped at Cyndi and he quickly distanced himself from her. "Doctor, you got it wrong, she's her best friend…"

"It doesn't matter now…" Kelvin began but Cyndi stepped forward, her gaze aggressive. "Doctor, you can't just say things you don't know."

Kelvin nodded. "You are right, I will take my leave now. The body had to be transferred to the morgue, when you are ready for the funeral you can come and claim her."

With that he spurned on his feet and walked away without any glance backward.

Alex watched him with mixed emotions swirling in his eyes as he walked away without a glance backward.

Cyndi had her fist clenched tightly, her eyes boring holes into his back. She really wanted to remind this doctor to mind his business but then Alex was still here.

Besides, it is over.

She only had to wait for the funeral before deciding her next step just to not show herself unreasonable.

Moments later, the ward slowly opened and Sonia's body covered with a white sheet was wheeled out by two porters.

Alex's breath caught and he subconsciously stepped forward. His hand trembled slightly as he slowly peeled away the cloth from her face.

His breathe ragged, his eyes reddened and his throat felt dried as he took in the sight of the woman who was lying still and motionless, her face peaceful as though she was asleep.

Cyndi stepped up behind him. "Alex…" she called softly but then she noticed his shoulder trembling and her brow furrowed.

"Let's go." One of the porters motioned to his colleague and the body was pushed away. Alex stood rooted to the spot as he watched them leave his line of sight.

"Alex, let's go back and inform your family." Cyndi smirked. "I hope you could put yourself together…You still have me and the baby…Okay."

Alex glanced at her, his eye fluttered slightly and he lowered his gaze shielding whatever he was thinking.

Cyndi's brow furrowed. "Alex…."

"Let's go." He smirked, spurned on his heels and walked off in the opposite direction.
