Chapter 15 - Chapter 14__Shadows And Sparks

The library had never felt so… alive.

Lyra settled into her usual corner, notebook open, pen poised, trying to focus. The faint scent of old pages mingled with the soft hum of fluorescent lights. She could hear the quiet rustle of students moving through the stacks, the scratch of pens, the occasional muffled laugh—but her attention kept drifting.

Because he was here.

Kael.

At first, she saw him leaning casually against a shelf at the far end, as if he had materialized from the shadows themselves. Then, with a grace that was almost inhuman, he disappeared between the stacks, leaving nothing but a subtle shift in the air. She blinked, unsure if she had imagined it.

Not imagining, she realized. He had just vanished—literally disappeared into the library shadows. The thought should have unsettled her, but instead, her heart thrummed with… fascination.

Lyra forced herself to focus on her notebook. Words formed slowly, carefully:

Dear Stranger,

He is everywhere and nowhere. I saw him disappear today. Not in a crowd, not behind a door—but into the shadows themselves. It should frighten me, but it… doesn't. It intrigues me instead.

Lyra.

She paused, sensing movement behind her. A group of students had gathered nearby, chatting quietly, laughing softly. And then… Kael reappeared, leaning against a table casually, but this time he wasn't alone.

Three other figures flanked him. Lyra hadn't noticed them before, though whispers on campus had mentioned his circle.

Riven, tall and athletic, with sharp eyes that missed nothing. Calm, confident, and always calculating.

Cassian, dark-haired, mischievous, with a crooked smile that hinted at secrets and trouble. Known for pushing boundaries and testing patience.

Seren, blonde, elegant, with a cool demeanor. She had charm in spades, often acting as the mediator of the group.

Lyra's eyes widened slightly as she took them in. Kael's friends were… almost as intimidating as he was. They moved with the same effortless confidence, the same quiet magnetism.

Her notebook slipped slightly as Cassian's eyes flicked toward her. He noticed her immediately, standing just a few feet away. A small, polite smirk appeared on his face.

"You're Lyra Vale, right?" he asked, voice low enough for Kael not to hear at first. "I've seen you around. You write… I like that."

Lyra blinked, unsure how to respond. She wasn't used to people noticing her—especially not strangers who carried Kael's kind of aura by association.

"Uh… thank you," she said cautiously, keeping her tone measured. "I write… things."

Cassian leaned casually against a nearby shelf, smirk never leaving his face. "Things are better than nothing," he said, teasing lightly. "You seem… different from the rest. Careful. Observant."

Lyra felt a strange mixture of flattery and caution. "I notice things," she admitted softly. "It helps me… survive."

Cassian chuckled quietly. "Fair enough. Survival is underrated."

Kael, however, was not amused.

Lyra felt his presence shift. He had been observing silently from a shadowed stack, his dark eyes narrowing slightly, a subtle crease appearing between his brows. Not anger—not yet—but a protective tension she had never fully felt before.

Cassian's tone grew slightly bolder. "So, what do you think of all this… campus chaos? Classes, people, rules?"

Lyra answered carefully, measuring each word. "It's… manageable. Mostly. The rules are annoying, but I'm… adjusting."

Her calm composure seemed to provoke Cassian further, and Kael's attention sharpened. He remained silent, leaning just enough from the shadows to make his presence known without stepping fully forward.

Lyra noticed the shift in the air—the unspoken tension. Kael's friends could flirt, tease, push boundaries—but Kael's focus was on her. And in that moment, Lyra realized he was watching, even when he didn't need to be.

Later, back in the safety of her dorm room, Lyra reflected on the encounter.

Dear Stranger,

Today, he was not alone. He has… associates. Three, maybe four, who move like extensions of him, yet each different. One of them approached me—polite, teasing, curious. I held my ground.

Kael noticed. That is what unsettled me the most. Not the attention, but his… reaction. He is subtle, unreadable, but I felt it. Protective, measuring, aware. I do not know if this is jealousy, care, or instinct. Perhaps all three.

I am aware, too. I will not let the presence of others dictate my responses. I will observe, choose, and remain myself.

Lyra.

That night, Lyra tried to sleep, but the memory of Kael's shadowed eyes lingered. The library, the sudden appearance of his friends, and the boldness of Cassian—they all tugged at a part of her she didn't fully understand.

She realized something important: Kael's world was larger than she imagined. The shadows he moved in were deep, intricate, and carefully controlled. And now, she had a small glimpse of it.

But Lyra was resolute. She would not be intimidated. She would not panic. She would observe, choose, and react on her terms.

And perhaps… she admitted quietly to herself, just a little reluctantly… the intrigue was addictive.
