Chapter 10 - Chapter 9 — Gift for the Family

Arc 1: The Wealth Momentum (2016)Part I: The Zero-Sum Game

Chapter 9 — Gift for the Family

Money can buy many things.

But the first thing it must buy… is peace.

The Dadar villa had not changed.

The same cracked mosaic tiles near the entrance.

The same neem tree casting uneven shadows in the courtyard.

The same faint smell of old books, incense, and boiled milk that clung to the walls like memory itself.

Vikram stood at the gate with several carefully wrapped bags in his hands.

Luxury bags.

Glossy paper. Thick ropes. International logos.

They looked absurd against the background of peeling paint and rusted iron.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Not because of fear.

But because this house was the last place where money had never mattered.

The House That Raised Him

Inside, Malini Devi was folding clothes on the wooden sofa, her movements disciplined and rhythmic—habits forged by years as a Physical Education teacher. Sweatpants, dupatta pinned tightly, hair tied back in a no-nonsense bun.

Balvendar Choudhary sat at the dining table, spectacles perched low on his nose, grading answer sheets with a red pen. Numbers. Equations. Right and wrong. The world, for him, had always been reducible to logic.

The ceiling fan creaked.

The radio played an old Lata Mangeshkar song.

This house did not care that Vikram now had lakhs in his bank account.

This house only cared whether he was settled.

A Mother's First Question

"You're home early today," Malini Devi said without looking up.

"Yes, Maa," Vikram replied.

She glanced at the bags.

Her eyebrows knitted.

"What is all this?"

Vikram smiled faintly.

"Just… shopping."

Her suspicion activated instantly.

"Shopping?" she repeated. "With whose money?"

Balvendar looked up from his papers.

That was all it took.

The Weight of Silence

There was a particular silence that existed only in Indian middle-class homes.

A silence filled with calculation.

A silence that asked questions without words.

Where did this money come from?

Is it safe?

Is it legal?

Is our son in trouble?

Vikram felt it press against his chest.

The blue panel flickered gently.

EMOTIONAL ENVIRONMENT: TENSE

He ignored it.

This wasn't about the system.

This was about them.

The First Gift

"Maa," Vikram said softly. "Please sit."

She hesitated, then complied.

He placed one bag in her lap.

She stared at it like it might explode.

"What nonsense is this?" she scolded. "We don't need—"

"Just open it," Vikram said.

Reluctantly, she did.

The silk caught the light instantly.

Deep maroon Banarasi silk, woven with gold zari work—heavy, rich, unmistakably expensive.

Malini Devi froze.

She lifted the saree with trembling fingers.

"Vikram…" her voice softened despite herself. "This… this is too much."

He shook his head.

"You never buy anything for yourself," he said. "This is not too much."

Her eyes glistened.

Not because of the saree.

Because someone had noticed.

The System Reacts

The blue panel expanded subtly.

POSITIVE EMOTION DETECTED

SOURCE: MATERNAL JOY

POINTS ADDED: +120

Vikram felt a strange warmth in his chest.

Not adrenaline.

Not excitement.

Something steadier.

A Father's Resistance

Balvendar cleared his throat.

"Where did you get the money for this?" he asked.

There was no anger in his tone.

Only concern.

Vikram turned.

Placed the second box on the table.

"For you, Papa."

Balvendar did not touch it.

"Explain first," he said firmly. "Then gifts."

Vikram inhaled.

Not the full truth.

Not yet.

"I've been consulting," he said. "Some freelance work. It paid well."

Balvendar studied him carefully.

Years of teaching mathematics had trained him to spot inconsistencies.

But today—

He chose to let it pass.

"Open it," Vikram said.

The Watch

Inside lay a premium Swiss watch.

Simple.

Elegant.

Leather strap.

No diamonds. No flash.

Just craftsmanship.

The kind of watch a man wears not to show wealth—but to respect time.

Balvendar's hand trembled as he picked it up.

"This…" he said slowly, "…is not cheap."

"I know," Vikram replied.

Silence stretched.

Then Balvendar did something rare.

He smiled.

Not broadly.

But genuinely.

The System Notices Everything

The blue panel glowed brighter.

POSITIVE EMOTION DETECTED

SOURCE: PATERNAL PRIDE

POINTS ADDED: +180

TOTAL POSITIVE EMOTION: 6%

Vikram blinked.

The system was changing.

Tracking not just actions—

But impact.

A Mother's Tears

Malini Devi stood abruptly.

She folded the saree back with reverence.

Then—

She hugged Vikram.

Tightly.

Unexpectedly.

"You worry us," she whispered. "So much."

Vikram closed his eyes.

For years, he had avoided responsibility.

Avoided pressure.

Avoided expectations.

But in this moment—

He felt something shift.

He wasn't escaping life anymore.

He was engaging with it.

Dinner That Night

Dinner was different.

Lighter.

More conversation.

Less tension.

Balvendar wore the watch to the table.

Malini Devi spoke excitedly about where she would wear the saree.

Even his sisters, sensing the mood, teased him affectionately.

"Bhaiya finally became rich," one laughed.

Vikram smiled.

The blue panel pulsed gently.

FAMILY HARMONY: STABILIZING

EQ GAIN: CONTINUOUS

Late Night Reflection

That night, Vikram sat alone on the terrace.

Mumbai's lights stretched endlessly.

He looked at the panel.

₹ BALANCE: ₹33,62,512.00

The balance had barely changed.

The system had not rewarded him financially.

And yet—

This felt more valuable than the 5x bonus.

He understood now.

Money was the fuel.

Emotion was the engine.

The New Metric

The panel shifted again.

A new bar appeared beneath the balance.

POSITIVE EMOTION METER: 6%

Vikram stared.

"So this is how you measure growth," he murmured.

Not net worth.

Not assets.

But happiness caused.

A Quiet Promise

He leaned back, closing his eyes.

"I won't let this break us," he said softly—to the night, to the system, to himself.

The panel responded.

INTENT REGISTERED

No bonus.

No sound.

Just acknowledgement.

End of Chapter 9
