Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 Early Trial for the Academy Tournament

"Ah open your mouth."

Ma Xiaotao blew on the whale glue she was holding, melted by the Phoenix Flame, and stuffed it into Su Wen's mouth, clapping her hands in satisfaction.

"Actually, I don't need it."

Su Wen chewed on the millennia-old whale glue that melted in his mouth, finding it tasteless yet somewhat regretful.

Whale glue could enhance one's strength, thus affecting the age limit for acquiring a spirit ring.

Ten thousand years later, the "limited spirit ring age" theory researched by the Grandmaster gradually became ineffective (only applicable to top geniuses), and now it felt quite like numerical inflation.

Even Wang Dong'er's second spirit ring was a thousand years old, yet the reaction from everyone in the entire academy was rather ordinary, without much surprise.

But he didn't need to acquire a spirit ring, so this thing was rather useless to him.

"Hmm."

Ma Xiaotao hummed casually.

"Wait."

Su Wen was stunned for a moment, suddenly realizing that this whale glue not only enhanced strength but also had a lasting effect.

Damn!

"Oh, Xiao Wen is here too."

A warm voice rang out.

Inside the inner courtyard's detached dormitory, several figures entered one after another.

Seeing Ma Xiaotao and Su Wen, they weren't particularly surprised; in fact, many wore mocking expressions.

Clearly, most of these inner courtyard disciples knew about the relationship between the two.

"Senior Yueheng? And."

Su Wen hesitated.

He was familiar with these people, or rather, several well-known figures from the original story:

Gongyang Mo, Dai Yueheng, Chen Zifeng, and others.

These were the main force of the academy that went to the competition two years later, but in order to highlight the protagonist's halo, they quickly "lost their minds," rushing headlong into the depths of a cave with unclear enemy information, resulting in heavy casualties and ultimately becoming the first Soul King.

That's why Su Wen couldn't forget the Ice Explosion Technique.

It was simply too useful, perfect for defeating the strong with the weak, and unleashed at crucial moments.

A Soul King could toy with Xuan Zi and severely injure the entire elite team; the Corpse Explosion Technique played a significant role—it's just unknown whether this evolution will allow the Ice Emperor to learn this divine skill.

"So, what did you come to see me for?"

Ma Xiaotao pouted, sitting next to Su Wen like a giant cushion, tightly hugging his arm.

"Dean Yan said that although the competition is still two years away, as the previous year's reserve team and the main force of this team, we need to practice together beforehand, especially Xiaotao, you and I as captain and vice-captain, we need to prepare even more."

Dai Yueheng didn't look at her.

"What's there to practice together? Those chickens and dogs from the Sun Moon Empire aren't even a match for me."

Ma Xiaotao raised an eyebrow, quite impatiently.

  "..."

Su Wen remained silent.

If the original story had gone according to plan, the Shrek Seven Devils, with everyone unharmed, wouldn't have dragged things out with the Sun Moon Empire for so long.

They would most likely have swept through, continuing their glory from the previous ten thousand years.

It just goes to show how terrifying the protagonist's halo is.

It made most of the supporting characters stupid, causing many to be eliminated, which gave the protagonist group a chance to turn the tide.

After all, if these guys hadn't been eliminated, where would Huo Jianhua's overpowered figure have been on the field…

"Dean Yan said so,"

Gongyang Mo coughed lightly.

Everyone immediately lowered their eyes and noses, pretending nothing was wrong and humming softly.

"Then let's go," Ma Xiaotao said helplessly, getting up.

The teacher had spoken, and while she might grumble a little, she still had to go.

Just as Ma Xiaotao strode to the door, she noticed no one was following, and her beautiful eyes widened in surprise.

"What are you standing there for? Let's go."

"Ahem, Dean Yan said to bring Xiao Wen along too," Dai Yueheng said somewhat awkwardly.

"Why bring him? He's not one of the Shrek Seven Devils, and even if he were, he'd be in the next year," Ma Xiaotao asked suspiciously.

"We just finished a round of inner court graduation assessments, and many inner court seniors have left, so there's a shortage of people.

Dean Yan only managed to gather six opponents for us, and we're still short one," Dai Yueheng said, shrugging.

To be honest, Dean Yan was also a little bewildered when he said this.

A boy who was only going to the Star Dou Great Forest to obtain his third spirit ring in two days—wouldn't he get hurt if he were placed in the main team of Shrek Academy?

He knew how terrifying this boy's talent was.

Reaching the Soul Master level at ten years old is incredibly astonishing in the entire history of Shrek Academy.

Whether they even have a Great Soul Master at ten is debatable, but this is one thing at a time.

In a team with an average level difference of twenty, his team would probably need someone specifically assigned to protect him.

Dai Yueheng is currently level fifty-seven; he doesn't think Su Wen could withstand even a single move from him but since it was Dean Yan who spoke, he had no choice but to obey.

"Alright."

Before Ma Xiaotao could speak, Su Wen stood up, his expression eager.

Inside the Sea God Pavilion, besides the elders and powerful figures like the Dean, Ma Xiaotao was the only one whose strength was closest to his, and they were the same age.

However, they rarely sparred; just expending his inner fire was enough to exhaust him.

This resulted in him having very little practical combat experience.

Since he hadn't yet enrolled, and he was too lazy to go to the outer academy to find some of his own level to spar with, how could he easily let go of this rare opportunity to experience his own strength?

  …

On the way to the dueling arena.

Dai Yueheng chatted and laughed with Su Wen.

Su Wen didn't have much ill will towards Dai Yueheng.

The sordid affairs in the White Tiger Duke's mansion were none of his concern from beginning to end.

After all, he was a transmigrator, not someone who had entered Huo Gua's perspective.

Besides, it was a scheme set up by Tang Shenwang, and it wasn't good to meddle.

He felt sorry for that unfortunate kid, but that was all.

After all, in his impression, Huo Gua wasn't very reliable either, a prime example of someone who couldn't be helped.

As the chosen one, countless opportunities were thrown his way to elevate him to a high position, but what was the result?

The revenge for his mother was glossed over, and for the sake of so-called love, he was tightly controlled by Tang Shenwang. Where was his dignity?

The original Dai Mubai's face made him want to rush into the book and slap himself.

For a protagonist like this, to glare angrily at Dai Yueheng would be utterly ridiculous.

Of course, seeing Dai Yueheng reminded him of the legendary loser Dai Huabin from the original story, who suffered repeated defeats and nearly got expelled from Shrek Academy for attempting to assassinate Huo Gua in a fit of rage, losing everything in the process.

They'd still be classmates then; the thought was amusing.

But it was only a year from now.

"We've arrived."

The group reached the dueling arena.

Both the outer and inner courtyards had their own dueling arenas, similar to gymnasiums, though the inner courtyard's were much smaller, as the entire inner courtyard had fewer than fifty people—sometimes even fewer spectators than referees.

"Everyone's here?"

Yan Shaozhe looked at everyone with a smile.

"Alright, everyone's here. I'm sure you all know why we're here, so let's start with introductions. Xiao Tao, you begin."

"Ma Xiao Tao, Level 59 Battle Soul King, Martial Soul: Fire Phoenix."

Ma Xiao Tao nodded.
