Chapter 5:
By nightfall, the city was quiet again.
Too quiet.
People returned to their homes, sat where they were told to sit, slept when the lights dimmed. The system declared stability restored. The word incident was replaced with anomaly, then removed entirely.
On the surface, nothing was wrong.
Underground, Elias felt the cost settle into his bones.
No one spoke much. They didn't need to. Everyone understood what had happened. A man had sat down. The city had answered. And now the system had shown what it did to memories that refused to behave.
Mara handed Elias a small data slate.
"What's this?" he asked.
"Names," she said. "People who saw. People who asked. People who won't forget easily."
Elias scrolled. The list wasn't long.
It didn't need to be.
"They'll come for us harder now," he said.
"Yes," Mara replied. "And they'll say it's for everyone's good."
Elias looked up, eyes tired but steady.
"Then we stop letting them decide what good means."
Above them, deep inside the city's core, a final log updated quietly:
CONTAINMENT SUCCESSFUL.
RISK: ONGOING.
The system was calm again.
Elias wasn't.
And that difference mattered.
