Chapter 1 - C-1: Failed Experiment

Prior info: It is the AU of Stranger Things, a world of fiction. This world is a story about children and monsters and a girl who tried to stop the monsters.

----------------------------------------------------------

The first thing he (the experimental subject) learned during the experiments upon him, is that screaming will be pointless. Simply because, sound doesn't travel well through the reinforced glass. It was soundproof. Even then, the shouts, and screams vibrates, flattens, and dies before it ever reaches the men in white coats. Even if it did, they simply wouldn't care for a disposable life. Screaming was something done by people who believe they are still human.

He is, none other than, the Subject Two placed in an area that seems like a laboratory.

The word number two, is burned into his thoughts before he understood language, before he understood pain. It was not a name. It was a placeholder, like a rank, in the order of his birth experiments. The name is something temporary, until it will be broken.

One such experimental daily routine is ongoing there in the lab now. Cold pressed against number two's spine. The metal table hummed faintly with a low vibration that rattled through his bones. Electrodes are glued to his scalp, wires burrowing into places he cannot see. His arms are restrained. He knows that they (researchers) will not let him move. This is the Hawkins National Laboratory.

The realization should comfort him. It should mean he knew what will be coming further in the research. The pain, blood and the mental strain etc. Yet, he will gain nothing if the research succeeds. This felt like a terror coiled in his chest.

Slowly, a man stepped onto number two's view beyond the glass. He looked tall and calm. His eyes looked kind in the way, a hunter's eyes are kind to a wounded animal. He's Dr. Martin Brenner. But the expeimental subjects call him, PAPA.

"Begin trial One forty-seven," Brenner says softly.

The words trial one forty-seven triggered something inside Two's skull. A switch flipped. Pain detonateted behind his eyes. His vision fractured into layers as if reality itself had been peeled back.

He saw the room in his vision from the above. Then he saw the room from behind the glass. Then, he saw the men's thoughts. It is too much for a young child.

Two gasps, with a sharp intake of breath, as the world flooded two's mind with too many thoughts. Suddenly objects started dancing in the air. Telekinesis hums under his skin like electricity searching for the ground. He felt the atoms of the table vibrating, begging to be torn apart. He could do it. He knew he could.

Don't, he thought desperately. The thought echoed deeply in his mind.

Suddenly, something else echoed back in his visions. It's a presence. It has no emotions. It looked cold, calculating and Curious.

Far away and impossibly close, The Upside Down stirred.

Brenner leaned closer to the glass. "Subject Two," he said, as if speaking gently might make the ssubject two humane. "Locate the object."

A red toy block sat on a pedestal across the room. It was a game meant for children to find the object hidden. Yet, here subject two had to locate with his mind, not by eyes. Two's gaze snapped to it.

The toy exploded instantly.

It was crushed by an invisible force until it collapsed into a dense cube, then it shattered into fine powder. The shockwave rattled the room. Alarms started to chirp.

Technicians started to shout at him (number two). But, Dr. Brenner smiled at him with an evil grin.

"Fascinating," Dr. Brenner murmured.

Pain lanced through Two's skull again, but it was sharper now. He felt something stretching, and tearing inside him. His thoughts bleed outwardly, brushing against toutwardlyof fellows around him.

One person felt fear, One technician is thinking about his daughter, another is thinking about his lunch, while other is thinking about running.

Stop, Two thought.

The wild thoughts inside his mind stopped all of them at once.

But, in that desperate moment he felt as if time is frozen mid-motion, eyes wide, bodies locked in place like mannequins.

He was Mind controlling the others in a fit of raw emotions.

This realization landed like a death sentence to the researchers. This wasn't supposed to happen yet. In the canon, these powers came later in a controlled manner. But, here it was raw and chaotic.

Blood trickled from his(two's)nose, then poured from his nose freely. His ears rang. The room distorted again, peeling back—

—and suddenly he (number 2)was somewhere else. It was a red place. A blood red. Sometimes, lightning of red and golden stroke in between. It was also a dark place. A place fully made up of rotting vines and floating spores.

The Upside Down.

Two doesn't travel there physicallyand intentionally. This was worse. This was mind travel through dimensions. It was similar to astral travel of doctor strange. His consciousness stretched across dimensions like a nerve exposed to ice.

Something noticed him.

It was the Mind Flayer. It's presence was something older but cruder. It looked like a giant spider. It's background voice hummed of raw hunger as if it could devour anything.

You are loud, it seemed to say in an irritated voice.

Suddenly, inside the lab, the reinforced glasses broke down, snapping apart under the unconscious telekinetic force. The metal buckled upward, folding like paper.

"Sedate him!" someone yelled.

An injection hit his neck. It did nothing. He slammed into the ceiling, then the floor, then he was suspended in the air, his limbs started to twitch. The world flickered between dimensions, each one burning his mind further.

Brenner's voice cuts through the chaos. "Remarkable," he said, awe tinged with something colder. "He's accessing multiple psychic layers simultaneously."

I'm dying now, Two realized.

The human brain was never meant to hold this much power. His every neuron was being fried, every pathway open. But, he felt himself unraveling as his life was shredding away.

Number two thought of the other experiments too. "What might happen to those poor lives." This broke him all at once.

The presence from the Upside Down pressed closer, curious now. It felt Interested on him. And for a single, horrifying moment—

Two understood everything about his experiments. The experiments, Papa, Henry Creel's blood injections, etc. are all linked. Then his mind fractured further. The world he saw grew darker. He left this broken world full of pain and suffering with his final thoughts, So this is it.

Voices murmured nearby watching the whole process of subject two's death.

"Neural collapse," someone said. "Complete burnout."

"Dispose of it now. The experiment seems to be a failure. It looks like, we can't produce another, with fully capable powers of Subject One. " Dr. Brenner replied without hesitation. His face was still devoid of any regrets.

Then a bag is zipped shut with two's corpse. It was carried out of Hawkins laboratory to bury the corpse of subject number two. After sometime, the corpse was buried in the Hawkins graveyard.
